The "DWARF parse during linker error" and "Build warn libbar.so" tests
require debug information.
configure defaults to "-O2 -g" but if overriding *FLAGS when building
tests, this might be lost. Explicitly pass -g given these tests require
it.

GCC doesn't put builtin function symbol references, which are defined in
the shared C library, in the IR symbol table. When linker rescans shared
objects and archives for newly added symbol references generated from the
IR inputs, it skips definitions of the builtin functions in shared
objects and archives.
Add first_hash to elf_link_hash_table to track unreferenced definitions
defined first in shared objects and archives. Always use them to resolve
any references.

The top level Makefile, the ld Makefile and others, define
CC_FOR_TARGET to be a compiler for the binutils target machine. This
is the compiler that should be used for almost all tests with C
source. There are _FOR_TARGET versions of CFLAGS, CXX, and CXXFLAGS
too. This was all supposed to work with the testsuite .exp files
using CC for the target compiler, and CC_FOR_HOST for the host
compiler, with the makefiles passing CC=$CC_FOR_TARGET and
CC_FOR_HOST=$CC to the runtest invocation.
One exception to the rule of using CC_FOR_TARGET is the native-only ld
bootstrap test, which uses the newly built ld to link a copy of
itself. Since the files being linked were created with the host
compiler, the boostrap test should use CC and CFLAGS, in case some
host compiler option provides needed libraries automatically.
However, bootstrap.exp used CC where it should have used CC_FOR_HOST.
I set about fixing that problem, then decided that playing games in
the makefiles with CC was a bad idea. Not only is it confusing, but
other dejagnu code knows about CC_FOR_TARGET. See dejagnu/target.exp.
So this patch gets rid of the makefile variable renaming and changes
all the .exp files to use the correct _FOR_TARGET variables.
CC_FOR_HOST and CFLAGS_FOR_HOST disappear. A followup patch will
correct bootstrap.exp to use CFLAGS, and a number of other things I
noticed.

As discussed previously, a.out support is now quite deprecated, and in
some cases removed, in both Binutils itself and NetBSD, so this legacy
default makes little sense. `netbsdelf*` and `netbsdaout*` still work
allowing the user to be explicit about there choice. Additionally, the
configure script warns about the change as Nick Clifton requested.
One possible concern was the status of NetBSD on NS32K, where only a.out
was supported. But per [1] NetBSD has removed support, and if it were to
come back, it would be with ELF. The binutils implementation is
therefore marked obsolete, per the instructions in the last message.
With that patch and this one applied, I have confirmed the following:
--target=i686-unknown-netbsd
--target=i686-unknown-netbsdelf
builds completely
--target=i686-unknown-netbsdaout
properly fails because target is deprecated.
--target=vax-unknown-netbsdaout builds completely except for gas, where
the target is deprecated.

Allow plugin syms to mark as-needed shared libs needed
when removing unused IR symbol references, ld didn't add unnecessary
DT_NEEDED libraries which may lead to undefined symbol reference in a
--as-needed library when the symbol is defined in a prior --as-needed
library and there is no reference in relocatable inputs. This behavior
is desirable since it ensures that both lazy and non-lazy bindings work
the same way. The problem is with --as-needed libraries, which happens
with and without LTO. Now, the linker may add many unnecessary DT_NEEDED
libraries for IR inputs.

Two pieces to this puzzle:
1) Revert HJ's fix for PR13250 so that size and alignment isn't
sticky, instead attack the real underlying problem that
_bfd_generic_link_add_one_symbol does the wrong thing in making a
common section in a shared library bfd.
2) Save and restore common u.c.p fields, which hold the section and
alignment.
A better fix for (2) would be to throw away all of that horrible code
saving and restoring the hash table when loading as-needed library
symbols, and instead do a scan over as-needed library symbols before
adding anything.

--export-dynamic-symbol-list is like a dynamic list, but without
the symbolic property for unspecified symbols.
When creating an executable, --export-dynamic-symbol-list is treated

When creating a shared library, it is treated like --dynamic-list if

I could trace this to the fact that gcc on sparc-sun-solaris2.* defaults
to --with-cpu=v9. So the gcc -S step of compiling the testcase is run
with -mcpu=v9, while the manual invocation of as-new lacks the
corresponding -Av9, creating a mismatch.
Solaris seems to be the only affected target, otherwise only
64-bit-default configurations default to --with-cpu=v9 or
--with-cpu=ultrasparc: sparcv9-*-*, sparc64-*-*,
sparc64-*-freebsd*, ultrasparc-*-freebsd*, and sparc64-*-openbsd*.
This patch just adds -Av9 to AFLAGS_PIC in ld-elf/shared.exp. It has a
precedent in ld-elfvers/vers.exp where -Av9a is added to as_options on
sparc-*-*. It lets the test pass and causes no other changes in

PR 25732
* emulparams/elf_i386_ldso.sh (COMMONPAGESIZE): New.
* testsuite/ld-elf/shared.exp:Don't xfail pr20995-2 tests for
Solaris.
PR 25327
* testsuite/ld-elf/shared.exp: Add -fcommon option to compiler
command line when building libcomm1.o and pr13250 tests.
* testsuite/ld-plugin/lto.exp: Likewise for pr20267 tests.
At least, not in the GOT. R_PPC64_RELATIVE is fine for powerpc64 in
the .opd section.
PR 22269
* testsuite/ld-elf/pr22269-1.rd: Look for GOT section NONE and
RELATIVE relocs.
* testsuite/ld-elf/shared.exp (pr22269-1): Give test a better
name. Use -z nocombreloc.
The ld testsuite includes numerous tests that depend on being able to
compile and link programs with the C compiler. Some of these tests
use [which $CC] to check for the presence of the compiler before
proceeding with the test, but run_ld_link_exec_tests and run_cc_link_tests
give ERRORs if compilation fails. Also, even if $CC is defined and present,
it may not be usable due to missing libraries, etc.
This patch adds a new procedure check_compiler_available that attempts
to build an empty program and caches the result. Uses of [which $CC]
are replaced with calls to this procedure, and run_ld_link_exec_tests
and run_cc_link_tests now also guard attempts to use $CC.
