The "python" command (and the Python implementation of the gdb
"source" command) does not handle Python exceptions in the same way as
other gdb-facing Python code. In particular, exceptions are turned
into a generic error rather than being routed through
gdbpy_handle_exception, which takes care of converting to 'quit' as
appropriate.
I think this was done this way because PyRun_SimpleFile and friends do
not propagate the Python exception -- they simply indicate that one
occurred.
This patch reimplements these functions to respect the general gdb
convention here. As a bonus, some Windows-specific code can be
removed, as can the _execute_file function.
The bulk of this change is tweaking the test suite to match the new
way that exceptions are displayed. These changes are largely
uninteresting. However, it's worth pointing out the py-error.exp
change. Here, the failure changes because the test changes the host
charset to something that isn't supported by Python. This then
results in a weird error in the new setup.

The output of "info breakpoints" includes breakpoint, watchpoint,
tracepoint, and catchpoint if they are created, so it should show
all the four types are deleted in the output of "info breakpoints"
to report empty list after "delete breakpoints".
It should also change the output of "delete breakpoints" to make it
clear that watchpoints, tracepoints, and catchpoints are also being
deleted. This is suggested by Guinevere Larsen, thank you.

include 2024,
- Manually updating a few files the copyright.py script told me to
update, these files had copyright headers embedded within the
file,
- Regenerating gdbsupport/Makefile.in to refresh it's copyright
date,
- Using grep to find other files that still mentioned 2023. If
these files were updated last year from 2022 to 2023 then I've
updated them this year to 2024.
I'm sure I've probably missed some dates. Feel free to fix them up as
you spot them.
This commit extends the breakpoint mechanism to allow for inferior
specific breakpoints (but not watchpoints in this commit).
As GDB gains better support for multiple connections, and so for
running multiple (possibly unrelated) inferiors, then it is not hard
to imagine that a user might wish to create breakpoints that apply to
any thread in a single inferior. To achieve this currently, the user
would need to create a condition possibly making use of the $_inferior
convenience variable, which, though functional, isn't the most user
friendly.
This commit adds a new 'inferior' keyword that allows for the creation
of inferior specific breakpoints.
Inferior specific breakpoints are automatically deleted when the
associated inferior is removed from GDB, this is similar to how
thread-specific breakpoints are deleted when the associated thread is
deleted.
Watchpoints are already per-program-space, which in most cases mean
watchpoints are already inferior specific. There is a small window
where inferior-specific watchpoints might make sense, which is after a
vfork, when two processes are sharing the same address space.
However, I'm leaving that as an exercise for another day. For now,
attempting to use the inferior keyword with a watchpoint will give an
error, like this:

A final note on the implementation: currently, inferior specific
breakpoints, like thread-specific breakpoints, are inserted into every
inferior, GDB then checks once the inferior stops if we are in the
correct thread or inferior, and resumes automatically if we stopped in
the wrong thread/inferior.
An obvious optimisation here is to only insert breakpoint locations
into the specific program space (which mostly means inferior) that
contains either the inferior or thread we are interested in. This
would reduce the number times GDB has to stop and then resume again in
a multi-inferior setup.
I have a series on the mailing list[1] that implements this
optimisation for thread-specific breakpoints. Once this series has
landed I'll update that series to also handle inferior specific
breakpoints in the same way. For now, inferior specific breakpoints
are just slightly less optimal, but this is no different to
thread-specific breakpoints in a multi-inferior debug session, so I
don't see this as a huge problem.

Only a few types in the Python API currently have __repr__()
implementations. This patch adds a few more of them. specifically: it
adds __repr__() implementations to gdb.Symbol, gdb.Architecture,
gdb.Block, gdb.Breakpoint, gdb.BreakpointLocation, and gdb.Type.
This makes it easier to play around the GDB Python API in the Python
interpreter session invoked with the 'pi' command in GDB, giving more
easily accessible tipe information to users.
An example of how this would look like:

The gdb.Block.__repr__() method shows the first 5 symbols from the
block, and then a message to show how many more were elided (if any).
This commit makes two changes to how we match newline characters in
the gdb_test proc.
First, for the newline pattern between the command output and the
prompt, I propose changing from '[\r\n]+' to an explicit '\r\n'.
The old pattern would spot multiple newlines, and so there are a few
places where, as part of this commit, I've needed to add an extra
trailing '\r\n' to the pattern in the main test file, where GDB's
output actually includes a blank line.
But I think this is a good thing. If a command produces a blank line
then we should be checking for it, the current gdb_test doesn't do
that. But also, with the current gdb_test, if a blank line suddenly
appears in the output, this is going to be silently ignored, and I
think this is wrong, the test should fail in that case.
Additionally, the existing pattern will happily match a partial
newline. There are a strangely large number of tests that end with a
random '.' character. Not matching a literal period, but matching any
single character, this is then matching half of the trailing newline
sequence, while the \[\r\n\]+ in gdb_test is matching the other half
of the sequence. I can think of no reason why this would be
intentional, I suspect that the expected output at one time included a
period, which has since been remove, but I haven't bothered to check
on this. In this commit I've removed all these unneeded trailing '.'
characters.
The basic rule of gdb_test after this is that the expected pattern
needs to match everything up to, but not including the newline
sequence immediately before the GDB prompt. This is generally how the
proc is used anyway, so in almost all cases, this commit represents no
significant change.
Second, while I was cleaning up newline matching in gdb_test, I've
also removed the '[\r\n]*' that was added to the start of the pattern
passed to gdb_test_multiple.
The addition of this pattern adds no value. If the user pattern
matches at the start of a line then this would match against the
newline sequence. But, due to the '*', if the user pattern doesn't
match at the start of a line then this group doesn't care, it'll
happily match nothing.
As such, there's no value to it, it just adds more complexity for no
gain, so I'm removing it. No tests will need updating as a
consequence of this part of the patch.

In this case, hw watchpoints are not supported, and using sw watchpoints
is slow.
Most of the time is spent in handling a try-catch, which triggers a malloc. I
think this bit is more relevant for the "catch throw" part of the test-case,
so fix the timeouts by setting the watchpoints after the try-catch.
Tested on x86_64-linux and powerpc64le-linux.
This changes skip_hw_breakpoint_tests to invert the sense, and renames
it to allow_hw_breakpoint_tests. This also converts some tests to use
"require" -- I missed this particular check in the first series.

This commit is the result of running the gdb/copyright.py script,
which automated the update of the copyright year range for all
source files managed by the GDB project to be updated to include
year 2023.
The canonical form of 'if' in modern TCL is 'if {} {}'. But there's
still a bunch of places in the testsuite where we make use of the
'then' keyword, and sometimes these get copies into new tests, which
just spreads poor practice.
This commit removes all use of the 'then' keyword from the gdb.python/
test script directory.
There should be no changes in what is tested after this commit.
With test-case gdb.python/py-breakpoint.exp I run into:

The hardware watchpoint check has been updated in a couple of recent
patches. This patch updates the hardware watchpoint test in the remaining
gdb tests.
The issue is the PowerPC processors support hardware watchpoints with the
exception of Power 9. The hardware watchpoint support is disabled on
Power 9. The test skip_hw_watchpoint_tests must be used to correctly
determine if the PowerPC processor supports hardware watchpoints.
This patch fixes 6 test failures in test gdb.threads/watchpoint-fork.exp.
Test gdb.base/watch-vfork.exp runs with can-use-hw-watchpoints set to
true and false. When the test is run with can-use-hw-watchpoints set to
true, gdb just falls back to using software watchpoints. The
patch reduces the number of expected passes by 2 since because it now
only runs once with can-use-hw-watchpoints set to false.
Test gdb.mi/mi-watch.exp runs the test with argument hw and sw. If the
argument is hw and hardware watchpoints are not supported the test exits.
The number of expected passes is cut in half with the patch as it now only
runs the test using software breakpoints. Previously the pass to use
hardware watchpoints was not skipped and the test actually ran using
software watchpoints.
The following tests run the same with and without the patch. The tests
are supposed to execute the gdb command "set can-use-hw-watchpoints 0" if
the processor does not support hardware bwatchpoints. However the command
was not being executed and gdb was falling back to using software
watchpoints since the Power 9 watchpoint resource check fails. With the
patch, the tests now execute the command and the test runs using software
watchpoints as it did previously. The tests are:

... make runto_main not pass no-message to runto. This means that if we
fail to run to main, for some reason, we'll emit a FAIL. This is the
behavior we want the majority of (if not all) the time.
Without this, we rely on tests logging a failure if runto_main fails,
otherwise. They do so in a very inconsisteny mannet, sometimes using
"fail", "unsupported" or "untested". The messages also vary widly.
This patch removes all these messages as well.
Also, remove a few "fail" where we call runto (and not runto_main). by
default (without an explicit no-message argument), runto prints a
failure already. In two places, gdb.multi/multi-re-run.exp and
gdb.python/py-pp-registration.exp, remove "message" passed to runto.
This removes a few PASSes that we don't care about (but FAILs will still
be printed if we fail to run to where we want to). This aligns their
behavior with the rest of the testsuite.

This is caused by the following:
- a lambda function body needs to be an expression
- in python 2, print is a statement, while in python 3 it's a function
- a function call is an expression, and a statement is not.
Fix this by defining a function print_bp_enabled:

As breakpoint_modified observer is currently notified upon breakpoint stop
before handling auto-disabling when enable count is reached, the observer
is never notified of the disabling.
The problem affects:
- The MI interpreter enabled= value when reporting =breakpoint-modified
- A Python event handler for breakpoint_modified using the "enabled"
member of its parameter
- insight: breakpoint GUI window is not properly updated upon auto-disable
This patch moves the observer notification after the auto-disabling
code and implements corresponding tests for the MI and Python cases.

This commit adds initial support for catchpoints to the python
breakpoint API.
This commit adds a BP_CATCHPOINT constant which corresponds to
GDB's internal bp_catchpoint. The new constant is documented in the
manual.
The user can't create breakpoints with type BP_CATCHPOINT after this
commit, but breakpoints that already exist, obtained with the
`gdb.breakpoints` function, can now have this type. Additionally,
when a stop event is reported for hitting a catchpoint, GDB will now
report a BreakpointEvent with the attached breakpoint being of type
BP_CATCHPOINT - previously GDB would report a generic StopEvent in
this situation.

The documentation for make-breakpoint from the Guile API and the `spec'
variant of the gdb.Breakpoint constructor from the Python API state that
the format acceptable for location strings is the same as that accepted
by the break command. However, using the -probe qualifier at the
beginning of the location string causes a GDB internal error as it
attempts to decode a probe location in the wrong code path. Without this
functionality, there doesn't appear to be another way to set breakpoints
on probe points from Python or Guile scripts.
This patch introduces a new helper function that returns a
breakpoint_ops instance appropriate for a parsed location and updates
the Guile and Python bindings to use said function, rather than the
current hard-coded use of bkpt_breakpoint_ops. Since this logic is
duplicated in the handling of the `break' and `trace' commands, those
are also updated to call into the new helper function.

I think it doesn't make much sense usability-wise, to show a
catchpoint as a breakpoint. The fact that GDB sets a breakpoint at
some magic address in the C++ run time is an implementation detail,
IMO. And as seen in the previous patch, such a catchpoint can end up
with more than one location/address even, so showing a single address
isn't entirely accurate.
This commit hides the addresses from view, and makes GDB show
"catchpoint" for type as well:

This comment in the code seems telling:
/* We need to reset 'type' in order for code in breakpoint.c to do

It kind of suggests that the reason catchpoints end up shown as
breakpoints was that it was easier to implement them that way, rather
than a desired property.
This commit fixes things up to make it possible to have bp_catch
breakpoints have software/hardware breakpoint locations, thus
eliminating the need for that hack:
- redo breakpoint_address_is_meaningful in terms of the location's
type rather than breakpoint type.
- teach bpstat_what about stepping over the catchpoint locations.
- install a allocate_location method for "catch catch/throw/rethrow",
one that forces the location type.

I noticed today that gdb.Breakpoint.location will crash when applied
to a catchpoint made with "catch throw".
The bug is that "catch throw" makes a breakpoint that is of type

This patch adds the possibility to pass a qualified=True|False parameter
when creating a breakpoint in Python. It is equivalent to using
-qualified in a linespec. The parameter actually accepts any Python
value, and converts it to boolean using Python's standard rules for
that (https://docs.python.org/3/library/stdtypes.html#truth).
Unlike the -source/-line/-function/-label parameters, it is possible to
use -qualified with a "normal" (non-explicit) linespec. Therefore, it
is possible (unlike these other parameters) to use this new parameter
along with the spec parameter.
I updated the py-breakpoint.exp test. To be able to test multiple
locations using a namespace, I had to switch the test case to compile as
C++. If we really wanted to, we could run it as both C and C++, but
omit the C++-specific parts when running it as C.

This patch adds some breakpoint events to Python. In particular,
there is a creation event that is emitted when a breakpoint is
created; a modification event that is emitted when a breakpoint
changes somehow; and a deletion event that is emitted when a
breakpoint is deleted.
In this patch, the event's payload is the breakpoint itself. I
considered making a new event type to hold the breakpoint, but I
didn't see a need. Still, I thought I would mention this as a spot
where some other choice is possible.

Some testcases, mostly gdb.reverse ones, assume the presence of a
'/' directory separator before the source file name. This is
incorrect for mingw32 hosts, generating false failures for those
tests.
I attempted to catch most of the occurrences of the pattern
".*/$srcfile" and replaced them with ".*$srcfile". The latter
is used elsewhere in the testsuite. The resulting patch is attached.
I also see other occurrences of the same assumption throughout the
testsuite, but usually they are arguments for function calls and i
seem to recall either the test harness or GDB deals with those
paths properly.
