9a6c7d9c02 C++ify gdb/common/environ.c 
As part of the preparation necessary for my upcoming task, I'd like to
propose that we turn gdb_environ into a class.  The approach taken
here is simple: the class gdb_environ contains everything that is
needed to manipulate the environment variables.  These variables are
stored in an std::vector<char *>, which can be converted to a 'char
**' and passed as argument to functions that need it.

The usage has not changed much.  As per Pedro's suggestion, this class
uses a static factory method initialization.  This means that when an
instance is created, it is initially empty.  When needed, it has to be
initialized using the static method 'from_host_environ'.

As mentioned before, this is a preparation for an upcoming work that I
will be posting in the next few weeks or so.  For that work, I'll
probably create another data structure that will contain all the
environment variables that were set by the user using the 'set
environment' command, because I'll need access to them.  This will be
much easier with the class-ification of gdb_environ.

As noted, this has been regression-tested with the new version of
environ.exp and no regressions were found.

d5722aa2fe Introduce gdb::byte_vector, add allocator that default-initializes 
In some cases we've been replacing heap-allocated gdb_byte buffers
managed with xmalloc/make_cleanup(xfree) with gdb::vector<gdb_byte>.
That usually pessimizes the code a little bit because std::vector
value-initializes elements (which for gdb_byte means
zero-initialization), while if you're creating a temporary buffer,
you're most certaintly going to fill it in with some data.  An
alternative is to use

  unique_ptr<gdb_byte[]> buf (new gdb_byte[size]);

but it looks like that's not very popular.

Recently, a use of obstacks in dwarf2read.c was replaced with
std::vector<gdb_byte> and that as well introduced a pessimization for
always memsetting the buffer when it's garanteed that the zeros will
be overwritten immediately.  (see dwarf2read.c change in this patch to
find it.)

So here's a different take at addressing this issue "by design":

#1 - Introduce default_init_allocator<T>

I.e., a custom allocator that does default construction using default
initialization, meaning, no more zero initialization.  That's the
default_init_allocation<T> class added in this patch.

#2 - Introduce def_vector<T>

I.e., a convenience typedef, because typing the allocator is annoying:

  using def_vector<T> = std::vector<T, gdb::default_init_allocator<T>>;

#3 - Introduce byte_vector

Because gdb_byte vectors will be the common thing, add a convenience
"byte_vector" typedef:

  using byte_vector = def_vector<gdb_byte>;

which is really the same as:

  std::vector<gdb_byte, gdb::default_init_allocator<gdb_byte>>;

The intent then is to make "gdb::byte_vector" be the go-to for dynamic
byte buffers.  So the less friction, the better.

#4 - Adjust current code to use it.

To set the example going forward.  Replace std::vector uses and also
unique_ptr<byte[]> uses.

One nice thing is that with this allocator, for changes like these:

  -std::unique_ptr<byte[]> buf (new gdb_byte[some_size]);
  +gdb::byte_vector buf (some_size);
   fill_with_data (buf.data (), buf.size ());

the generated code is the same as before.  I.e., the compiler
de-structures the vector and gets rid of the unused "reserved vs size"
related fields.

The other nice thing is that it's easier to write
  gdb::byte_vector buf (size);
than
  std::unique_ptr<gdb_byte[]> buf (new gdb_byte[size]);
or even (C++14):
  auto buf = std::make_unique<gdb_byte[]> (size); // zero-initializes...

#5 - Suggest s/std::vector<gdb_byte>/gdb::byte_vector/ going forward.

Note that this commit actually fixes a couple of bugs where the current
code is incorrectly using "std::vector::reserve(new_size)" and then
accessing the vector's internal buffer beyond the vector's size: see
dwarf2loc.c and charset.c.  That's undefined behavior and may trigger
debug mode assertion failures.  With default_init_allocator,
"resize()" behaves like "reserve()" performance wise, in that it
leaves new elements with unspecified values, but, it does that safely
without triggering undefined behavior when you access those values.

This changes wchar_iterator from charset.c into a real C++ class, then
updates the users to use the class.  This lets us remove some cleanups
in favor of the class' destructor.

9a3c826307 Add some more casts (1/2) 
Note: I needed to split this patch in two, otherwise it's too big for
the mailing list.

This patch adds explicit casts to situations where a void pointer is
assigned to a pointer to the "real" type.  Building in C++ mode requires
those assignments to use an explicit cast.  This includes, for example:

 - callback arguments (cleanups, comparison functions, ...)
 - data attached to some object (objfile, program space, etc) in the form
   of a void pointer
 - "user data" passed to some function

This patch comes from the commit "(mostly) auto-generated patch to insert
casts needed for C++", taken from Pedro's C++ branch.

Only files built on x86 with --enable-targets=all are modified, so the
native files for other arches will need to be dealt with separately.

I built-tested this with --enable-targets=all and reg-tested.  To my
surprise, a test case (selftest.exp) had to be adjusted.

Here's the ChangeLog entry.  Again, this was relatively quick to make
despite the length, thanks to David Malcom's script, although I don't
believe it's very useful information in that particular case...

224c3ddb89 Add casts to memory allocation related calls 
Most allocation functions (if not all) return a void* pointing to the
allocated memory.  In C++, we need to add an explicit cast when
assigning the result to a pointer to another type (which is the case
more often than not).

The content of this patch is taken from Pedro's branch, from commit
"(mostly) auto-generated patch to insert casts needed for C++".  I
validated that the changes make sense and manually reflowed the code to
make it respect the coding style.  I also found multiple places where I
could use XNEW/XNEWVEC/XRESIZEVEC/etc.

Thanks a lot to whoever did that automated script to insert casts, doing
it completely by hand would have taken a ridiculous amount of time.

Only files built on x86 with --enable-targets=all are modified.  This
means that all other -nat.c files are untouched and will have to be
dealt with later by using appropiate compilers.  Or maybe we can try to
build them with a regular g++ just to know where to add casts, I don't
know.

I built-tested this with --enable-targets=all and reg-tested.

Here's the changelog entry, which was not too bad to make despite the
size, thanks to David Malcom's script.  I fixed some bits by hand, but
there might be some wrong parts left (hopefully not).

830301108d handle 'iconv's that define EILSEQ to ENOENT 
We're currently pulling gnulib's errno module as a dependency of some
other module.  That provides an errno.h that defines EILSEQ to a
distinct value if the system's errno.h doesn't define it already.

However, GNU iconv does this:

The "different header" mentioned is wchar.h.  This is handled in:

 http://git.savannah.gnu.org/cgit/libiconv.git/tree/m4/eilseq.m4

which defines @EILSEQ@ to ENOENT if EILSEQ isn't found in either
errno.h or wchar.h.

So if iconv sets errno to EILSEQ on such system's, it's really setting
it to ENOENT.  And when we check for EILSEQ, we're checking for
gnulib's value.  The result is we won't detect the error correctly.

As we dropped support for both SunOS 4 or old BSD/OS, maybe we don't
need to care about the wchar.h issue anymore.  Still, AFAICS, gnulib's
m4/errno_h.m4 doesn't know that EILSEQ may be defined in wchar.h, and
so on such systems, ISTM gnulib ends up defining an incompatible
EILSEQ itself, but I think that should be fixed on the gnulib side, by
making it extract the EILSEQ value out of the system's wchar.h, like
GNU iconv does.

So that leaves handling the case of gnulib making up a EILSEQ value,
which we take as meaning the system really doesn't really define it,
which will be the same systems GNU iconv sets errno to ENOENT instead
of EILSEQ.

Looking at glibc's iconv it seems that ENOENT is never used there.
It seems it's safe to always treat ENOENT the same as EILSEQ.

The current EILSEQ definition under PHONY_ICONV is obviously stale as
gnulib garantees there's always a EILSEQ defined.

Tested on x86_64 Fedora 20.

39086a0e13 Avoid invalid pointer to pointer conversions. 
Casts between 'char **' <-> 'unsigned char **' and 'char **' <-> const
char **' are actually invalid:

In a nutshell, char (and variants) can alias anything, but pointers to
chars get no special treatment (cf. C99/N1256, 6.5/7).

Turns out older gcc's actually warn/complain on these constructs,
though newer one's don't:

This patch fixes the cases I added last week.  It also fixes one other
preexisting case in charset.c, though it seems even older gccs don't

The encoding conversion code works with gdb_byte arrays as the generic
buffers that hold strings of any encoding/width.  Changing the type of
this field to gdb_byte* removes the need for one cast, and makes
everything work with the same types.  That's good -- WRT to strings,
"char *" is (almost) consistently throughout GDB only used for
ascii-ish strings.
