gdb: add owner-related methods to struct type
two fields of struct maint_type were renamed. 'flag_objfile_owned'
became 'm_flag_objfile_owned' and 'owner' became 'm_owner'. Update
our python helper script to take this into account.
I've added a basic test that uses the self-test framework to load the
pretty printers, and print a type.
The test relies on stopping in GDB's `value_print` function.
gdb/ChangeLog:
* gdb-gdb.py.in (StructMainTypePrettyPrinter) <owner_to_string>:
Updated fields names flag_objfile_owned to m_flag_objfile_owned,
and owner to m_owner.
gdb/testsuite/ChangeLog:
* gdb.gdb/python-helper.exp: New file.
This commits the result of running gdb/copyright.py as per our Start
of New Year procedure...
gdb/ChangeLog
Update copyright year range in copyright header of all GDB files.
Suppose we have the script file below:
break main
commands
print 123
end
run
If started with this script file, GDB executes the breakpoint command:
$ gdb -q -x myscript --args ./test
Reading symbols from ./test...
Breakpoint 1 at 0x114e: file test.c, line 2.
Breakpoint 1, main () at test.c:2
2 return 0;
$1 = 123
(gdb)
However, if we remove the "run" line from the script and pass it with
the '-ex' option instead, the command is not executed:
$ gdb -q -x myscript_no_run --args ./test
Reading symbols from ./test...
Breakpoint 1 at 0x114e: file test.c, line 2.
Starting program: /path/to/test
Breakpoint 1, main () at test.c:2
2 return 0;
(gdb)
If the user enters a command at this point, the breakpoint command
is executed, yielding weird output:
$ gdb -q -x myscript_no_run --args ./test
Reading symbols from ./test...
Breakpoint 1 at 0x114e: file test.c, line 2.
Starting program: /path/to/test
Breakpoint 1, main () at test.c:2
2 return 0;
(gdb) print "a"
$1 = "a"
$2 = 123
When consuming script files, GDB runs bp actions after executing a
command. See `command_handler` in event-top.c:
if (c[0] != '#')
{
execute_command (command, ui->instream == ui->stdin_stream);
/* Do any commands attached to breakpoint we stopped at. */
bpstat_do_actions ();
}
However, for '-ex' commands, `bpstat_do_actions` is not invoked.
Hence, the misaligned output explained above occurs. To fix the
problem, add a call to `bpstat_do_actions` after executing a command.
gdb/ChangeLog:
2020-12-07 Tankut Baris Aktemur <tankut.baris.aktemur@intel.com>
* main.c (catch_command_errors): Add a flag parameter; invoke
`bpstat_do_actions` if the flag is set.
(execute_cmdargs): Update a call to `catch_command_errors`.
gdb/testsuite/ChangeLog:
2020-12-07 Tankut Baris Aktemur <tankut.baris.aktemur@intel.com>
* gdb.base/bp-cmds-run-with-ex.c: New file.
* gdb.base/bp-cmds-run-with-ex.exp: New file.
* gdb.base/bp-cmds-run-with-ex.gdb: New file.
* gdb.gdb/python-interrupts.exp: Update the call to

* gdb.gdb/python-selftest.exp: Ditto.
When GDB is compiled with --enable-targets=all I would sometimes see
the 'maintenance selftest' in gdb.gdb/unittest.exp test timeout.
This one command causes GDB to run many separate self tests, this can
take some time. The output of this command basically follows this
pattern:
(gdb) maintenance selftest
Running selftest aarch64-analyze-prologue.
Running selftest aarch64-process-record.
Running selftest arm-record.
Running selftest arm_analyze_prologue.
Running selftest array_view.
Running selftest child_path.
Running selftest cli_utils.
..... snip lots more lines ....
Ran 79 unit tests, 0 failed
Currently the expect script waits for the final summary line ("Ran 79
unit test, 0 failed") before declaring pass or fail. The problem is
that if the summary line takes too long to appear the test will
timeout.
As this test makes use of gdb_test_multiple then all I've done is add
an extra pattern that matches the 'Running selftest ....' lines and
then calls exp_continue. Doing this means we find matches much more
frequently, and each time we do the timeout timer resets, preventing
the overall test from timing out.
gdb/testsuite/ChangeLog:
* gdb.gdb/unittest.exp: Spot 'Running...' lines.
There are 3 test directories with one duplicate test-name: gdb.gdb, gdb.opt
and gdb.xml. The duplicates are:
...
DUPLICATE: gdb.gdb/complaints.exp: call complaint_internal ($cstr)
DUPLICATE: gdb.opt/inline-locals.exp: info locals above bar 2 \
(PRMS: gdb/25695)
DUPLICATE: gdb.xml/tdesc-regs.exp: ptype $extrareg
...
Fix as appropriate.
Tested on x86_64-linux.
gdb/testsuite/ChangeLog:
2020-05-12 Tom de Vries <tdevries@suse.de>
* gdb.gdb/complaints.exp: Use with_test_prefix.
* gdb.xml/tdesc-regs.exp: Same.
* gdb.opt/inline-locals.exp: Fix test name.
With gdb.gdb/selftest.exp, we get:
...
(xgdb) PASS: gdb.gdb/selftest.exp: send SIGINT signal to child process
^M
Thread 1 "xgdb" received signal SIGINT, Interrupt.^M
0x00007ffff5bf01db in poll () from /lib64/libc.so.6^M
(gdb) FAIL: gdb.gdb/selftest.exp: send ^C to child process again
...
The failure is due to gdb printing 'Thread 1 "xgdb" received signal SIGINT',
but the regexp in the test-case expecting 'Program received signal SIGINT'.
Fix this by updating the regexp, similar to how that is done earlier in the
test-case.
gdb/testsuite/ChangeLog:
2019-08-13 Tom de Vries <tdevries@suse.de>
* gdb.gdb/selftest.exp (send ^C to child process again): Accept also
Thread.
After the sync there is one testsuite regression, the test
"signal SIGINT" in gdb.gdb/selftest.exp which now FAILs. Previously,
the readline 6.2 SIGINT handler would temporarily reinstall the
underlying application's SIGINT handler and immediately re-raise SIGINT
so that the orginal handler gets invoked. But now (since readline 6.3)
its SIGINT handler does not re-raise SIGINT or directly invoke the
original handler; it now sets a flag marking that SIGINT was raised, and
waits until readline explicitly has control to call the application's
SIGINT handler. Anyway, because SIGINT is no longer re-raised from
within readline's SIGINT handler, doing "signal SIGINT" with a stopped
inferior gdb process will no longer resume and then immediately stop the
process (since there is no 2nd SIGINT to immediately catch). Instead,
the inferior gdb process will now just print "Quit" and continue to run.
So with this commit, this particular test case is adjusted to reflect
this change in behavior (we now have to send a 2nd SIGINT manually to
stop it).
gdb/testsuite/ChangeLog
2019-08-12 Patrick Palka <patrick@parcs.ath.cx>
* gdb.gdb/selftest.exp (test_with_self): Update test to now
expect the GDB inferior to no longer immediately stop after
being resumed with "signal SIGINT".
Fix up all failures encountered when running the testsuite with
GDB_DEBUG="infrun".
Some tests rely on enabling debugging for various components. With
debugging on, this will be lost to the debug file.
Disable separate tty for mi tests when debugging. This currently
does not work.
disasm.c should send errors to the stderr instead of the logfile.
Note that enabling debug for other components might still cause
additional errors above what has been fixed here.

This commit applies all changes made after running the gdb/copyright.py
script.
Note that one file was flagged by the script, due to an invalid
copyright header
(gdb/unittests/basic_string_view/element_access/char/empty.cc).
As the file was copied from GCC's libstdc++-v3 testsuite, this commit
leaves this file untouched for the time being; a patch to fix the header
was sent to gcc-patches first.
gdb/ChangeLog:
Update copyright year range in all GDB files.
This is a follow-up of:
https://sourceware.org/ml/gdb-patches/2018-08/msg00347.html
Instead of going throttle and always enabling our selftests (even in
non-development builds), this patch is a bit more conservative and
introduces a configure option ("--enable-unit-tests") that allows the
user to choose whether she wants unit tests in the build or not. Note
that the current behaviour is retained: if no option is provided, GDB
will have selftests included in a development build, and will *not*
have selftests included in a non-development build.
The rationale for having this option is still the same: due to the
many racy testcases and random failures we see when running the GDB
testsuite, it is unfortunately not possible to perform a full test
when one is building a downstream package. As the Fedora GDB
maintainer and one of the Debian GDB uploaders, I feel like this
situation could be improved by, at least, executing our selftests
after the package has been built.
This patch introduces no regressions to our build.
OK?

squash! Add parameter to allow enabling/disabling selftests via configure
This removes the SHORT_FIRST_MESSAGE case from complaints, leaving
only a single case. This allows for the removal of the last argument
to clear_complaints, and also simplifies complaint_internal, removing
an extra allocation in the process.
After this, the "./gdb -iex 'set complaint 1' -nx ./gdb" example will
show:
Reading symbols from ./gdb...
During symbol reading: .debug_ranges entry has start address of zero [in module /home/tromey/gdb/build/gdb/gdb]
During symbol reading: DW_AT_low_pc 0x0 is zero for DIE at 0x17116c1 [in module /home/tromey/gdb/build/gdb/gdb]
During symbol reading: .debug_line address at offset 0xa22f5 is 0 [in module /home/tromey/gdb/build/gdb/gdb]
During symbol reading: unsupported tag: 'DW_TAG_unspecified_type'
During symbol reading: const value length mismatch for 'std::ratio<1, 1000000000>::num', got 8, expected 0
This is a bit wordier but, I think, a bit more clear, as the form of
the message no longer depends on precisely when it was emitted. In
particular if you compare to the output from the 'Clean up "Reading
symbols" output' patch, you can see that earlier gdb would switch from
the prefix-less form to the "During symbol reading" form at a point
that is meaningless to the user (specifically, after psymtab reading
is done and gdb tries to expand a CU).

That's one very long line. I find it quite difficult to read that,
and I thought it would be better with some newlines, which is what
this patch does. Now the output looks like:
(gdb) file ./gdb

This converts observers from using a special source-generating script
to be plain C++. This version of the patch takes advantage of C++11
by using std::function and variadic templates; incorporates Pedro's
patches; and renames the header file to "observable.h" (this change
eliminates the need for a clean rebuild).
Note that Pedro's patches used a template lambda in tui-hooks.c, but
this failed to compile on some buildbot instances (presumably due to
differing C++ versions); I replaced this with an ordinary template
function.
Regression tested on the buildbot.

We don't build GDB selftests bits when $development is false. However, if

The problem is that we're always computing the arguments to pass to
complaint, including passing the format strings through gettext, even
when complaints are disabled. As seen above, gettext can be quite
expensive.
Fix this by wrapping complaint in a macro that skips the real
complaint call when complaints are disabled.
This improves "gdb -nx -readnow -batch gdb" from
~11.0s => ~7.8s with -O2 -g3, and
~6.0s => ~5.3s with -O2 -g.
w/ gcc 5.3.1, on x86_64, for me.

This changes gdb_realpath to return a unique_xmalloc_ptr and fixes up
the callers. This allows removing some cleanups. This change by
itself caused xfullpath.exp to fail; and attempting to fix that ran
into various problems (like .get() being optimized out); so this patch
also rewrites xfullpath.exp to be a C++ selftest instead.

Now, GDB is able to dynamically create i386-linux target descriptions
from features, instead of using pre-generated target descriptions. These
pre-generated target descriptions are no longer used by GDB (note that
they are still used by GDBserver).
This patch add a new maint command "maint check xml-descriptions" to test
dynamically generated tdesc are identical to these generated from xml files.

gdb's (or gdbserver's) own signal handling should not interfere with
the signal dispositions their spawned children inherit. However, it
currently does. For example, some paths in gdb cause SIGPIPE to be
set to SIG_IGN, and as consequence, the child starts with SIGPIPE to
set to SIG_IGN too, even though gdb was started with SIGPIPE set to
SIG_DFL.
This is because the exec family of functions does not reset the signal
disposition of signals that are set to SIG_IGN:
http://pubs.opengroup.org/onlinepubs/7908799/xsh/execve.html
Signals set to the default action (SIG_DFL) in the calling process
image are set to the default action in the new process
image. Signals set to be ignored (SIG_IGN) by the calling process
image are set to be ignored by the new process image. Signals set to
be caught by the calling process image are set to the default action
in the new process image (see <signal.h>).
And neither does it reset signal masks or flags.
In order to be transparent, when spawning new child processes to debug
(with "run", etc.), reset signal actions and mask back to what was
originally inherited from gdb/gdbserver's parent, just before execing
the target program to debug.

I wanted to unit test the Rust lexer, so I added a simple unit testing
command to gdb.
The intent is that self tests will only be compiled into gdb in
development mode. In release mode they simply won't exist. So, this
exposes $development to C code as GDB_SELF_TEST.
In development mode, test functions are registered with the self test
module. A test function is just a function that does some checks, and
throws an exception on failure.
Then this adds a new "maint selftest" command which invokes the test
functions, and a new dejagnu test case that invokes it.

When running tests in parallel, each test puts its generated files in a
different directory, under "outputs". I think it would be nice if it
was always the case, as it would isolate the test cases a bit more. An
artifact created by a test wouldn't get overwritten by another test.
Also, it makes it easier to clean up. A lot of executables are left all
over the place because their names do not appear in gdb.*/Makefile. If
everything is in "outputs", then we just have to delete that directory
(which we already do).
At the same time it makes the gdb.foo directories and their Makefiles
useless in the build directory, since they are pretty much only used for
cleaning.
What do you think?

This reverts commit b558ff043d.
This reverts commit 4a11f20659.
The initial import commit failed to retain local changes made to
readline's configure.in (and the commit message erroneously stated that
there were no local changes that needed to be reapplied). Also the
import caused a couple of build errors and a scattering of testsuite
regressions throughout many arches. It's probably better to start over
with this import, hopefully more carefully next time.
This patch syncs our upstream copy of readline from version 6.2 to the
latest version, 7.0 alpha (released July 10 2015).
I essentially copied what was done the last time readline was synced,
when Jan updated to readline 6.2 in 2011:
http://sourceware.org/ml/gdb-patches/2011-05/msg00003.html
Procedure:
1. I extracted the readline-7.0-alpha tarball on top of readline/.
2. I deleted all the new files under doc/ that were deliberately omitted
before.
3. I regenerated readline/configure and readline/examples/rlfe/configure
using autoconf 2.64. No other configure files need regenerating.
4. I updated the function gdb_printable_part in completer.c with a
trivial change made to the readline function it is based off of,
printable_part in readline/complete.c. There is more work to be done in
completer.c to sync it with readline/complete.c, but it is non-trivial
and should probably be done separately anyway.
Local patches that had to be reapplied:
None. readline 7.0 alpha contains all of our local readline
patches.
New files in readline/:
colors.{c,h}
examples/{hist_erasedups,hist_purgecmd,rl-callbacktest,rlbasic}.c
parse-colors.{c,h}
readline.pc.in
configure.ac
Deleted files in readline/:
configure.in
Regressions:
So with this commit, this particular test case is adjusted to reflect
this change in behavior (we now have to send a 2nd SIGINT manually to
stop it).
Aside from this one testsuite regression, I personally noticed no
regression in user-visible behavior. Though I only tested on x86_64
and on i686 Debian Stretch.
Getting this kind of change in at the start of the GDB 7.11 development
cycle will allow us to get a lot of passive testing from developers and
from bleeding-edge users.
