72a8f76323 Change symbol::line to unsigned int
A user here at AdaCore noticed that, when debugging a certain program,
a stack frame reported line 34358, where it should have been line
99894.

After debugging a bit, I discovered:

(top) p (99894 & ~65536)
$60 = 34358

That line, symbol::line is too narrow.

This patch widens the member and changes all the uses that currently
use the narrower type.

f34652de0b internal_error: remove need to pass __FILE__/__LINE__
Currently, every internal_error call must be passed __FILE__/__LINE__
explicitly, like:

  internal_error (__FILE__, __LINE__, "foo %d", var);

The need to pass in explicit __FILE__/__LINE__ is there probably
because the function predates widespread and portable variadic macros
availability. We can use variadic macros nowadays, and in fact, we
already use them in several places, including the related
gdb_assert_not_reached.

So this patch renames the internal_error function to something else,
and then reimplements internal_error as a variadic macro that expands
__FILE__/__LINE__ itself.

The result is that we now should call internal_error like so:

  internal_error ("foo %d", var);

Likewise for internal_warning.

The patch adjusts all calls sites. 99% of the adjustments were done
with a perl/sed script.

The non-mechanical changes are in gdbsupport/errors.h,
gdbsupport/gdb_assert.h, and gdb/gdbarch.py.

bd2b40ac12 Change GDB to use frame_info_ptr
This changes GDB to use frame_info_ptr instead of frame_info *
The substitution was done with multiple sequential `sed` commands:

sed 's/^struct frame_info;/class frame_info_ptr;/'
sed 's/struct frame_info \*/frame_info_ptr /g' - which left some
    issues in a few files, that were manually fixed.
sed 's/\<frame_info \*/frame_info_ptr /g'
sed 's/frame_info_ptr $/frame_info_ptr/g' - used to remove whitespace
    problems.

The changed files were then manually checked and some 'sed' changes
undone, some constructors and some gets were added, according to what
made sense, and what Tromey originally did

557b4d7650 gdbsupport: make gdb_assert_not_reached accept a format string
Change gdb_assert_not_reached to accept a format string plus
corresponding arguments. This allows giving more precise messages.

Because the format string passed by the caller is prepended with a "%s:"
to add the function name, the callers can no longer pass a translated
string (`_(...)`). Make the gdb_assert_not_reached include the _(),
just like the gdb_assert_fail macro just above.

3637a558a5 Use std::vector for "registers_used" in compile feature
This changes the GDB compile code to use std::vector<bool> when
computing which registers are used. This is a bit more idiomatic, but
the main benefit is that it also adds some checking when the libstd++
debug mode is enabled.

ceacbf6edf gdb: remove TYPE_FIELD macro
Replace all uses of it by type::field.

Note that since type::field returns a reference to the field, some spots
are used to assign the whole field structure. See ctfread.c, function

with the macro, so I don't think it's a problem, but if anybody sees a
really nicer way to do this, now could be a good time to implement it.

c9d95fa3d0 Replace the MSYMBOL_*_NAME macros with member functions
Improves readability. In the future, it will also allow making the name
private, once the name setter functions become member functions.

230d2906b9 Rename gdb exception types
This renames the gdb exception types. The old types were only needed
due to the macros in common-exception.h that are now gone.

The intermediate layer of gdb_exception_RETURN_MASK_ALL did not seem
needed, so this patch removes it entirely.

a70b814420 Rewrite TRY/CATCH
This rewrites gdb's TRY/CATCH to plain C++ try/catch. The patch was
largely written by script, though one change (to a comment in
common-exceptions.h) was reverted by hand.

3d6e9d2336 Make exceptions use std::string and be self-managing
This changes the exception's "message" member to be a shared_ptr
wrapping a std::string. This allows removing the stack of exception
messages, because now exceptions will self-destruct when needed. This
also adds a noexcept copy constructor and operator= to gdb_exception,
plus a "what" method.

42a4f53d2b Update copyright year range in all GDB files.
This commit applies all changes made after running the gdb/copyright.py
script.

Note that one file was flagged by the script, due to an invalid
copyright header
(gdb/unittests/basic_string_view/element_access/char/empty.cc).
As the file was copied from GCC's libstdc++-v3 testsuite, this commit
leaves this file untouched for the time being; a patch to fix the header
was sent to gcc-patches first.

d82b3862f1 compile: Remove non-const reference parameters
As mentioned here:

  https://sourceware.org/gdb/wiki/Internals%20GDB-C-Coding-Standards#Avoid_non-const_reference_parameters.2C_use_pointers_instead

we prefer to avoid non-const references. This patch changes the
non-const references I could find in the compile/ directory, either by
making them rvalue-reference (&&) or changing them to pointers.

I'd say all the changes are pretty obvious, except the one in
compile_cplus_instance::enter_scope which might require more attention.

2b1ffcfd6f Use BLOCK_ENTRY_PC in place of most uses of BLOCK_START
This change/patch substitues BLOCK_ENTRY_PC for BLOCK_START in
places where BLOCK_START is used to obtain the address at which
execution should enter the block. Since blocks can now contain
non-contiguous ranges, the BLOCK_START - which is still be the
very lowest address in the block - might not be the same as
BLOCK_ENTRY_PC.

There is a change to infrun.c which is less obvious and less mechanical.
I'm posting it as a separate patch.

9cdfd9a26e Change compile_instance/compile_c_instance into classes
This patch changes structs compile_instance and compile_c_instance into
classes.

Because of the nature of the change, there are a number of unavoidably
mechanical changes buried in here, such as turning variable access of the
POD struct into method calls, removing the struct keyword, and changing
access of the plugin from "c_plugin->operation()" to
"plugin ().operation ()".

There is one "non-trivial" change associated with this patch, though.
The type cache and symbol error maps have been moved into the base class,
believing these facilities would be used other language implementations.
[They are indeed re-used by C++.]

gdb/ChangeLog:

        * compile/compile-c-support.c (c_get_compile_context): Use `new'
        instead of `new_compile_instance'.
        * compile/compile-c-symbols.c (compile_instance::insert_symbol_error):

18cdc6d8f8 Add a C++ wrapper for GCC C plug-in
This patch introduces a new class which wraps the GCC C compile plug-in.
It is a little unfortunate that this all happened in between the time that
GCC moved to C++ and GDB moved to C++, leaving us with an ABI promise to
support a C-like interface. The hope is to isolate GDB from some of this
should it change in the future.

Broadly, what this does is replace calls like:

  C_CTX (context)->c_ops->operation (C_CTX (context), ...);

with calls that now look like:

  context->c_plugin->operation (...);

This API will be further refined in following patches when struct
compile_instance/compile_c_instance are changed into classes.

gdb/ChangeLog:
        * Makefile.in (HFILES_NO_SRCDIR): Add compile/gcc-c-plugin.h.
        * compile/compile-c-types.c: Define GCC_METHODN macros and include
        gcc-c-fe.def to define C plugin.
        (delete_instance): Delete `c_plugin'.
        (new_compile_instance): Initialize `c_plugin'.
        * compile/compile-c.h: Include gcc_c_plugin.h.
        (struct compile_c_instance) <c_plugin>: New member.
