bd2b40ac12 Change GDB to use frame_info_ptr
This changes GDB to use frame_info_ptr instead of frame_info *
The substitution was done with multiple sequential `sed` commands:

sed 's/^struct frame_info;/class frame_info_ptr;/'
sed 's/struct frame_info \*/frame_info_ptr /g' - which left some
    issues in a few files, that were manually fixed.
sed 's/\<frame_info \*/frame_info_ptr /g'
sed 's/frame_info_ptr $/frame_info_ptr/g' - used to remove whitespace
    problems.

The changed files were then manually checked and some 'sed' changes
undone, some constructors and some gets were added, according to what
made sense, and what Tromey originally did

edae3fd660 gdb/python: remove Python 2 support
New in this version:

 - Add a PY_MAJOR_VERSION check in configure.ac / AC_TRY_LIBPYTHON.  If
   the user passes --with-python=python2, this will cause a configure
   failure saying that GDB only supports Python 3.

Support for Python 2 is a maintenance burden for any patches touching
Python support. Among others, the differences between Python 2 and 3
string and integer types are subtle. It requires a lot of effort and
thinking to get something that behaves correctly on both. And that's if
the author and reviewer of the patch even remember to test with Python
2.

See this thread for an example:

  https://sourceware.org/pipermail/gdb-patches/2021-December/184260.html

So, remove Python 2 support. Update the documentation to state that GDB
can be built against Python 3 (as opposed to Python 2 or 3).

Update all the spots that use:

 - sys.version_info
 - IS_PY3K
 - PY_MAJOR_VERSION
 - gdb_py_is_py3k

... to only keep the Python 3 portions and drop the use of some
now-removed compatibility macros.

I did not update the configure script more than just removing the
explicit references to Python 2. We could maybe do more there, like
check the Python version and reject it if that version is not
supported. Otherwise (with this patch), things will only fail at
compile time, so it won't really be clear to the user that they are
trying to use an unsupported Python version. But I'm a bit lost in the
configure code that checks for Python, so I kept that for later.

6c92c33953 Convert wrap_here to use integer parameter
I think it only really makes sense to call wrap_here with an argument

result. Much of it was written by a script.

1da5d0e664 Change how Python architecture and language are handled
Currently, gdb's Python layer captures the current architecture and
language when "entering" Python code. This has some undesirable
effects, and so this series changes how this is handled.

First, there is code like this:

  gdbpy_enter enter_py (python_gdbarch, python_language);

This is incorrect, because both of these are NULL when not otherwise
assigned. This can cause crashes in some cases -- I've added one to
the test suite. (Note that this crasher is just an example, other
ones along the same lines are possible.)

Second, when the language is captured in this way, it means that
Python code cannot affect the current language for its own purposes.
It's reasonable to want to write code like this:

    gdb.execute('set language mumble')
    ... stuff using the current language
    gdb.execute('set language previous-value')

However, this won't actually work, because the language is captured on
entry. I've added a test to show this as well.

This patch changes gdb to try to avoid capturing the current values.
The Python concept of the current gdbarch is only set in those few
cases where a non-default value is computed or needed; and the
language is not captured at all -- instead, in the cases where it's
required, the current language is temporarily changed.

9698f71410 Remove uses of fprintf_symbol_filtered
I believe that many calls to fprintf_symbol_filtered are incorrect.
In particular, there are some that pass a symbol's print name, like:

  fprintf_symbol_filtered (gdb_stdout, sym->print_name (),
			   current_language->la_language, DMGL_ANSI);

fprintf_symbol_filtered uses the "demangle" global to decide whether
or not to demangle -- but print_name does this as well. This can lead
to double-demangling. Normally this could be innocuous, except I also
plan to change Ada demangling in a way that causes this to fail.

7807d76a1c gdb/python: fix FrameDecorator regression on Python 2
This commit:

  commit d1cab9876d
  Date:   Tue Sep 15 11:08:56 2020 -0600

      Don't use gdb_py_long_from_ulongest

Introduced a regression when GDB is compiled with Python 2. The frame
filter API expects the gdb.FrameDecorator.function () method to return
either a string (the name of a function) or an address, which GDB then
uses to lookup a msymbol.

If the address returned from gdb.FrameDecorator.function () comes from
gdb.Frame.pc () then before the above commit we would always expect to
see a PyLong object.

After the above commit we might (on Python 2) get a PyInt object.

The GDB code does not expect to see a PyInt, and only checks for a
PyLong, we then see an error message like:

  RuntimeError: FrameDecorator.function: expecting a String, integer or None.

This commit just adds an additional call to PyInt_Check which handle
the missing case.

I had already written a test case to cover this issue before spotting
that the gdb.python/py-framefilter.exp test also triggers this
failure. As the new test case is slightly different I have kept it
in.

The new test forces the behaviour of gdb.FrameDecorator.function
returning an address. The reason the existing test case hits this is
due to the behaviour of the builtin gdb.FrameDecorator base class. If
the base class behaviour ever changed then the return an address case
would only be tested by the new test case.

gdb/ChangeLog:

	* python/py-framefilter.c (py_print_frame): Use PyInt_Check as
	well as PyLong_Check for Python 2.

gdb/testsuite/ChangeLog:

	* gdb.python/py-framefilter-addr.c: New file.
	* gdb.python/py-framefilter-addr.exp: New file.
	* gdb.python/py-framefilter-addr.py: New file.

dda83cd783 gdb, gdbserver, gdbsupport: fix leading space vs tabs issues
Many spots incorrectly use only spaces for indentation (for example,
there are a lot of spots in ada-lang.c). I've always found it awkward
when I needed to edit one of these spots: do I keep the original wrong
indentation, or do I fix it? What if the lines around it are also
wrong, do I fix them too? I probably don't want to fix them in the same
patch, to avoid adding noise to my patch.

So I propose to fix as much as possible once and for all (hopefully).

One typical counter argument for this is that it makes code archeology
more difficult, because git-blame will show this commit as the last
change for these lines. My counter counter argument is: when
git-blaming, you often need to do "blame the file at the parent commit"
anyway, to go past some other refactor that touched the line you are
interested in, but is not the change you are looking for. So you
already need a somewhat efficient way to do this.

Using some interactive tool, rather than plain git-blame, makes this
trivial. For example, I use "tig blame <file>", where going back past
the commit that changed the currently selected line is one keystroke.
It looks like Magit in Emacs does it too (though I've never used it).
Web viewers of Github and Gitlab do it too. My point is that it won't
really make archeology more difficult.

The other typical counter argument is that it will cause conflicts with
existing patches. That's true... but it's a one time cost, and those
are not conflicts that are difficult to resolve. I have also tried "git
rebase --ignore-whitespace", it seems to work well. Although that will
re-introduce the faulty indentation, so one needs to take care of fixing
the indentation in the patch after that (which is easy).

47f0e2ff7f Don't use PyInt_FromLong
Avoid the use of PyInt_FromLong, preferring gdb_py_object_from_longest
instead. I found found another spot that was incorrectly handling
errors (see gdbpy_create_ptid_object) while writing this patch; it is
fixed here.

7813437494 gdb: remove TYPE_CODE macro
Remove TYPE_CODE, changing all the call sites to use type::code
directly. This is quite a big diff, but this was mostly done using sed
and coccinelle. A few call sites were done by hand.

gdb/ChangeLog:

	* gdbtypes.h (TYPE_CODE): Remove. Change all call sites to use
	type::code instead.

c1b5c1ebc9 Use an accessor function for general_symbol_info::language
Also renames the member variable to m_language to make code easier to read
when more functions become member functions.

I was originally hoping to eventually make m_language private (after a few
more patches), but unfortunately then it no longer counts as a POD type,
which means gdbsupport/poison.h won't let us use memset to initialize
this type, which psymtabs rely on to clear padding bytes so that bcache
can work properly.

7f6aba03b9 Introduce metadata style
This introduces a new "metadata" style and changes many places in gdb
to use it. The idea here is to let the user distinguish gdb output
from output that (conceptually at least) comes directly from the
inferior. The newly-styled category includes text that gdb
traditionally surrounds in "<...>", like "<unavailable>".

I only added a single test for this. In many cases this output is
difficult to test. Also, while developing this errors in the
implementation of the new printf formats showed up as regressions.

3d31bc39e6 AArch64 pauth: Indicate unmasked addresses in backtrace
Armv8.3-a Pointer Authentication causes the function return address to be
obfuscated on entry to some functions. GDB must unmask the link register in
order to produce a backtrace.

The following patch adds markers of [PAC] to the bracktrace, to indicate
which addresses needed unmasking. This includes the backtrace when using MI.

For example, consider the following backtrace:

(gdb) bt
0  0x0000000000400490 in puts@plt ()
1  0x00000000004005dc in foo ("hello") at cbreak-lib.c:6
2  0x0000000000400604 [PAC] in bar () at cbreak-lib.c:12
3  0x0000000000400620 [PAC] in main2 () at cbreak.c:17
4  0x00000000004005b4 in main () at cbreak-3.c:10

The functions in cbreak-lib use pointer auth, which masks the return address
to the previous function, causing the addresses of bar (in the library) and main2
(in the main binary) to require unmasking in order to unwind the backtrace.

An extra bool is added alongside the prev_pc in the frame structure. At the
point at which the link register is unmasked, the AArch64 port calls into frame
to sets the bool. This is the most efficient way of doing it.

The marker is also added to the python frame printer, which is always printed if
set. The marker is not explicitly exposed to the python code.

I expect this will potentially cause issues with some tests in the testsuite
when Armv8.3 pointer authentication is used. This should be fixed up in the
the future once real hardware is available for full testsuite testing.

gdb/ChangeLog:

        * NEWS: Expand the Pointer Authentication entry.

4b5e8d19af Implement 'set print frame-info|frame-arguments presence'.
New settings allow to better control what frame information is printed.

'set print frame-info' allows to override the default frame information
printed when a GDB command prints a frame.
The backtrace command has a new option -frame-info to override
this global setting.

It is now possible to have very short frame information by using the
new 'set print frame-arguments presence' and
'set print frame-info short-location'.

Combined with 'set print address off', a backtrace will only show
the essential information to see the function call chain, e.g.:
  (gdb) set print address off
  (gdb) set print frame-arguments presence
  (gdb) set print frame-info short-location
  (gdb) bt
  #0  break_me ()
  #1  call_me (...)
  #2  main ()
  (gdb)

This is handy in particular for big backtraces with functions having
many arguments.

Python frame filter printing logic has been updated to respect the new
setting in non MI mode.

Also, the default frame information printed was inconsistent when
backtrace was printing the frame information itself, or when the python
frame filtering code was printing the frame information.
This patch changes the default of python frame filtering to have a
consistent behaviour regarding printed frame-information, whatever
the presence/activity/matches of python filters.

268a13a5a3 Rename common to gdbsupport
This is the next patch in the ongoing series to move gdbsever to the
top level.

This patch just renames the "common" directory. The idea is to do
this move in two parts: first rename the directory (this patch), then
move the directory to the top. This approach makes the patches a bit
more tractable.

I chose the name "gdbsupport" for the directory. However, as this
patch was largely written by sed, we could pick a new name without too
much difficulty.

d4c16835ca Make "backtrace" support -OPT options
This adds support for comand options to the "backtrace" command. We'll get:

  (gdb) bt -
  -entry-values         -hide                 -past-main
  -frame-arguments      -no-filters           -raw-frame-arguments
  -full                 -past-entry

~~~~
(gdb) help backtrace
Print backtrace of all stack frames, or innermost COUNT frames.
Usage: backtrace [OPTION]... [QUALIFIER]... [COUNT | -COUNT]
Options:
  -entry-values no|only|preferred|if-needed|both|compact|default
    Set printing of function arguments at function entry
    GDB can sometimes determine the values of function arguments at entry,
    in addition to their current values.  This option tells GDB whether
    to print the current value, the value at entry (marked as val@entry),
    or both.  Note that one or both of these values may be <optimized out>.
  -frame-arguments all|scalars|none
    Set printing of non-scalar frame arguments
  -raw-frame-arguments [on|off]
    Set whether to print frame arguments in raw form.
    If set, frame arguments are printed in raw form, bypassing any
    pretty-printers for that value.
  -past-main [on|off]
    Set whether backtraces should continue past "main".
    Normally the caller of "main" is not of interest, so GDB will terminate
    the backtrace at "main".  Set this if you need to see the rest
    of the stack trace.
  -past-entry [on|off]
    Set whether backtraces should continue past the entry point of a program.
    Normally there are no callers beyond the entry point of a program, so GDB
    will terminate the backtrace there.  Set this if you need to see
    the rest of the stack trace.
  -full
    Print values of local variables.
  -no-filters
    Prohibit frame filters from executing on a backtrace.
  -hide
    Causes Python frame filter elided frames to not be printed.
For backward compatibility, the following qualifiers are supported:
   full       - same as -full option.
   no-filters - same as -no-filters option.
   hide       - same as -hide.
With a negative COUNT, print outermost -COUNT frames.
~~~~

Implementation wise, this:

- Moves relevant options/settings globals to structures.
- Tweaks a number of functions to pass down references to such structures.
- Adds option_def structures describing the options/settings.
- Makes backtrace_command parse the options, with gdb::option::process_options.
- Tweaks "backtrace"'s help to describe the new options.
- Adds testcases.

Note that backtrace is a PROCESS_OPTIONS_UNKNOWN_IS_OPERAND command,
because of the "-COUNT" argument.

The COUNT/-COUNT argument is currently parsed as an expression. I
considered whether it would be prudent here to require "--", but
concluded that the risk of causing a significant breakage here is much
lower compared to "print", since printing the expression is not the
whole point of the "backtrace" command. Seems OK to me to require
typing "backtrace -past-main -- -p" if the user truly wants to refer
to the negative of a backtrace count stored in an inferior variable
called "p".

230d2906b9 Rename gdb exception types
This renames the gdb exception types. The old types were only needed
due to the macros in common-exception.h that are now gone.

The intermediate layer of gdb_exception_RETURN_MASK_ALL did not seem
needed, so this patch removes it entirely.

3fabc0163a Do not include py-ref.h in most files
py-ref.h can really only be included from a specific spot in

42a4f53d2b Update copyright year range in all GDB files.
This commit applies all changes made after running the gdb/copyright.py
script.

Note that one file was flagged by the script, due to an invalid
copyright header
(gdb/unittests/basic_string_view/element_access/char/empty.cc).
As the file was copied from GCC's libstdc++-v3 testsuite, this commit
leaves this file untouched for the time being; a patch to fix the header
was sent to gcc-patches first.

	Update copyright year range in all GDB files.

cbe5657196 Add output styles to gdb
This adds some output styling to the CLI.

A style is currently a foreground color, a background color, and an
intensity (dim or bold). (This list could be expanded depending on
terminal capabilities.)

A style can be applied while printing. For ui-out, this is done by
passing the style constant as an argument. For low-level cases,
fprintf_styled and fputs_styled are provided.

Users can control the style via a number of new set/show commands. In
the interest of not typing many nearly-identical documentation
strings, I automated this. On the down side, this is not very
i18n-friendly.

I've chose some default colors to use. I think it would be good to
enable this by default, so that when users start the new gdb, they
will see the new feature.

Stylizing is done if TERM is set and is not "dumb". This could be
improved when the TUI is available by using the curses has_colors
call. That is, the lowest layer could call this without committing to
using curses everywhere; see my other patch for TUI colorizing.

I considered adding a new "set_style" method to ui_file. However,
because the implementation had to interact with the pager code, I
didn't take this approach. But, one idea might be to put the isatty
check there and then have it defer to the lower layers.

3bf9c013e4 MI: Fix printing of frame architecture with Python frame filters enabled
Commit 6d52907e22 (MI: Print frame architecture when printing frames
on an MI channel) added frame's architecture to MI frame output. However
the frame architecture was not correctly printed in the output of
"-stack-list-frames" with frame filters enabled (via "-enable-frame-filters").
This was because with frame filters enabled, the actual frame printing is
done in "py_print_frame" rather than "print_frame". This issue is now fixed.

76c939acfd Simplify exception handling in py-framefilter.c
This patch changes py-framefilter.c as suggested by Pedro in:
https://sourceware.org/ml/gdb-patches/2017-06/msg00748.html

rather than in each particular function. This simplifies much of the
code.

92256134f3 Allow C-c to work in backtrace in more cases
PR cli/17716 notes that it is difficult to C-c (or "q" at a pagination

updates all the uses. It also changes the enum constants to use <<,
as suggested by Sergio.

6893c19a8b Make "bt N" print correct number of frames when using a frame filter
PR python/16497 notes that using "bt" with a positive argument prints
the wrong number of frames when a frame filter is in use. Also, in this
case, the non-frame-filter path will print a message about "More stack
frames" when there are more; but this is not done in the frame-filter
case.

The first problem is that backtrace_command_1 passes the wrong value
to apply_ext_lang_frame_filter -- that function takes the final
frame's number as an argument, but backtrace_command_1 passes the
count, which is off by one.

The solution to the second problem is to have the C stack-printing
code stop at the correct number of frames and then print the message.

Tested using the buildbot.
