PR exp/28359 points out that 'ptype/o' does not work when the current
language is "asm".
I tracked this down to a hard-coded list of languages in typeprint.c.
This patch replaces this list with a method on 'language_defn'
instead. If all languages are ever updated to have this feature, the
method could be removed; but in the meantime this lets each language
control what happens.
I looked at having each print_type method simply modify the flags
itself, but this doesn't work very well with the feature that disables
method-printing by default (but allows it via a flag).

GDB prints the wrong type for typedefs in case there is another typedef
available for the same raw type (gdb/16040). The reason is that the
current hashmap based substitution mechanism always compares the target
type of a typedef and not its scoped name.

A common pattern for string_file is to want to move out the internal
string buffer, because it is the result of the computation that we want
to return. It is the reason why string_file::string returns a non-const
reference, as explained in the comment. I think it would make sense to
have a dedicated method for that instead and make string_file::string
return a const reference.
This allows removing the explicit std::move in the typical case. Note
that compile_program::compute was missing a move, meaning that the
resulting string was copied. With the new version, it's not possible to
forget to move.

In an earlier version of the pager rewrite series, it was important to
audit unfiltered output calls to see which were truly necessary.
This is no longer necessary, but it still seems like a decent cleanup
to change calls to avoid explicitly passing gdb_stdout. That is,
rather than using something like fprintf_unfiltered with gdb_stdout,
the code ought to use plain printf_unfiltered instead.
This patch makes this change. I went ahead and converted all the
_filtered calls I could find, as well, for the same clarity.
This commit brings all the changes made by running gdb/copyright.py
as per GDB's Start of New Year Procedure.
For the avoidance of doubt, all changes in this commits were
performed by the script.
There's a common pattern to call add_basic_prefix_cmd and
add_show_prefix_cmd to add matching set and show commands. Add the
add_setshow_prefix_cmd function to factor that out and use it at a few
places.

I noticed that pointer_type is declared in language.h and defined in
language.c. However, it really has to do with types, so it should
have been in gdbtypes.h all along.
This patch changes it to be a method on struct type. And, I went
through uses of TYPE_IS_REFERENCE and updated many spots to use the
new method as well. (I didn't update ones that were in arch-specific
code, as I couldn't readily test that.)
Previously, the prefixname field of struct cmd_list_element was manually
set for prefix commands. This seems verbose and error prone as it
required every single call to functions adding prefix commands to
specify the prefix name while the same information can be easily
generated.
Historically, this was not possible as the prefix field was null for
many commands, but this was fixed in commit
3f4d92ebdf by Philippe Waroquiers, so
we can rely on the prefix field being set when generating the prefix
name.
This commit also fixes a use after free in this scenario:
* A command gets created via Python (using the gdb.Command class).
The prefix name member is dynamically allocated.
* An alias to the new command is created. The alias's prefixname is set
to point to the prefixname for the original command with a direct
assignment.
* A new command with the same name as the Python command is created.
* The object for the original Python command gets freed and its
prefixname gets freed as well.
* The alias is updated to point to the new command, but its prefixname
is not updated so it keeps pointing to the freed one.

This commit adds a flag to the ptype command in order to print the
offsets and sizes of struct members using the hexadecimal notation. The
'x' flag ensures use of the hexadecimal notation while the 'd' flag
ensures use of the decimal notation. The default is to use decimal
notation.
Before this patch, gdb only uses decimal notation, as pointed out in PR
gdb/22640.
Here is an example of this new behavior with hex output turned on:

Some code in GDB will examine the structure of an expression to see if
it starts with OP_TYPE, and then proceed to extract the type by hand.
There is no need to do this dissection manually. evaluate_type does

This patch changes such code to use evaluate_type. In two cases this
simplifies the code.
Regression tested on x86-64 Fedora 28.

This commit enhances print_type_scalar to include support for
TYPE_CODE_FIXED_POINT. This way, any language falling back to

worth the performance impact.

Note that the ptype information printed for types described
via pure DWARF debug info is slightly less informative as
the one printed when the information is encoded in the type's
name, via the GNAT encoding. As a result, the output in
the case of DWARF-described fixed point types is slightly
different. In pratice, this is no real loss because the information
not available in DWARF has no bearing on how the type is actually
stored in memory.

Note that since type::field returns a reference to the field, some spots
are used to assign the whole field structure. See ctfread.c, function
attach_fields_to_type, for example. This is the same as was happening
with the macro, so I don't think it's a problem, but if anybody sees a

Currently there are many prefix commands that do nothing but call
either help_list or cmd_show_list. I happened to notice that one such
call, for "set print type", used the wrong command list parameter,
causing incorrect output.
Rather than fix this bug in isolation, I decided to eliminate this
possibility by adding two new ways to add prefix commands, which
simply route the call to help_list or cmd_show_list, as appropriate.
This makes it impossible for a mismatch to occur.
In some cases, a bit of output was removed; however, I don't think
this output in general was very useful. It seemed redundant with
what's already printed by help_list. A representative example is this
hunk, removed from ada-lang.c:
- printf_unfiltered (_(\
-"\"set ada\" must be followed by the name of a setting.\n"));
This simplified the CLI style set/show commands quite a bit, and
allowed the deletion of a macro.
This also cleans up some unusual code in windows-tdep.c.
Tested on x86-64 Fedora 30. Note that I have no way to build the
go32-nat.c change.

This introduces a new "metadata" style and changes many places in gdb
to use it. The idea here is to let the user distinguish gdb output
from output that (conceptually at least) comes directly from the
inferior. The newly-styled category includes text that gdb
traditionally surrounds in "<...>", like "<unavailable>".
I only added a single test for this. In many cases this output is
difficult to test. Also, while developing this errors in the
implementation of the new printf formats showed up as regressions.

I noticed recently that some command had a trailing newline in its
"help" output. So, I temporarily hacked cli-decode.c to print
something when a new command was installed that had a trailing newline
in its help message, and wrote this patch, which removes all the ones
I could find this way. (There could still be a few more in *-nat
files.)
Tested on x86-64 Fedora 29.

In the location of "o" ("0: 5"), the "5" means "there are 5 bits left
relative to the size of the underlying type.
I find this very difficult to follow. On irc, Sergio said that this
choice came because it is what pahole does. However, I think it's not
very useful, and maybe is just an artifact of the way that
DW_AT_bit_offset was defined in DWARF 3.
This patch changes ptype/o to print the offset of a bitfield in a more
natural way, that is, using the bit number according to the platform's
bit numbering.
With this patch, the output is now:

This is better, IMO, because now the "offset" of a bitfield is
consistent with the offset of an ordinary member, referring to its
offset from the start of the structure.

I noticed that ptype/o will print:

That is, "*/" at the end of the "hole" message does not line up with
the other comment ends. I thought it would be a bit nicer if this did
line up, so I fixed it. Then, to my surprise, I found that I could
not make ptype-offsets.exp fail.
I still am not sure why it doesn't fail, but changing the tests to use
string_to_regexp and changing the quoting helped. This in turn showed
that some of the existing test cases were wrong, so I've also updated
them here.
