gmp-utils: New API to simply use of GMP's integer/rational/float objects
This API was motivated by a number of reasons: - GMP's API does not handle "long long" and "unsigned long long", so using LONGEST and ULONGEST is not straightforward; - Automate the need to initialize GMP objects before use, and clear them when no longer used. However, this API grew also to help with similar matter such as formatting to a string, and also reading/writing fixed-point values from byte buffers. gdb, gdbserver, gdbsupport: fix leading space vs tabs issues
Many spots incorrectly use only spaces for indentation (for example, there are a lot of spots in ada-lang.c). I've always found it awkward when I needed to edit one of these spots: do I keep the original wrong indentation, or do I fix it? What if the lines around it are also wrong, do I fix them too? I probably don't want to fix them in the same patch, to avoid adding noise to my patch. So I propose to fix as much as possible once and for all (hopefully). One typical counter argument for this is that it makes code archeology more difficult, because git-blame will show this commit as the last change for these lines. My counter counter argument is: when git-blaming, you often need to do "blame the file at the parent commit" anyway, to go past some other refactor that touched the line you are interested in, but is not the change you are looking for. So you already need a somewhat efficient way to do this. Using some interactive tool, rather than plain git-blame, makes this trivial. For example, I use "tig blame <file>", where going back past the commit that changed the currently selected line is one keystroke. It looks like Magit in Emacs does it too (though I've never used it). Web viewers of Github and Gitlab do it too. My point is that it won't really make archeology more difficult. The other typical counter argument is that it will cause conflicts with existing patches. That's true... but it's a one time cost, and those are not conflicts that are difficult to resolve. I have also tried "git rebase --ignore-whitespace", it seems to work well. Although that will re-introduce the faulty indentation, so one needs to take care of fixing the indentation in the patch after that (which is easy). gdb/ChangeLog: * aarch64-linux-tdep.c: Fix Add simple_search_memory unit tests

Tweak gdbsupport/valid-expr.h for GCC 6, fix build

Seems like that GCC doesn't understand that archetype is an alias template, and is being strict in requiring a template class. The fix here is then to make archetype a template class, to pacify GCC. The resulting code looks like this: template <TYPENAMES, typename = decltype (EXPR)> struct archetype { }; static_assert (gdb::is_detected_exact<archetype<TYPES, EXPR_TYPE>, archetype, TYPES>::value == VALID, ""); is_detected_exact<Expected, Op, Args> checks whether Op<Args> is type Expected: - For Expected, we pass the explicit EXPR_TYPE, overriding the default parameter type of archetype. - For Args we don't pass the last template parameter, so archtype defaults to the EXPR's decltype. So in essence, we're really checking whether EXPR_TYPE is the same as decltype(EXPR). We need to do the decltype in a template context in order to trigger SFINAE instead of failing to compile. Use a curses pad for source and disassembly windows
This changes the TUI source and disassembly windows to use a curses pad for their text. This is an important step toward properly handling non-ASCII characters, because it makes it easy to scroll horizontally without needing gdb to also understand multi-byte character boundaries -- this can be wholly delegated to curses. Use arrays rather than pointers for global string constants
My understanding is that it's mildly better to use a static const array, as opposed to a "const char *", for a global string constant, when possible. This makes sense to me because the pointer requires a load from an address, whereas the array is just the address. So, I searched for these in gdb and gdbserver. Rewrite enum_flags, add unit tests, fix problems
This patch started by adding comprehensive unit tests for enum_flags. For the testing part, it adds: - tests of normal expected uses of the API. - checks that _invalid_ uses of the API would fail to compile. I.e., it validates that enum_flags really is a strong type, and that incorrect mixing of enum types would be caught at compile time. It pulls that off making use of SFINEA and C++11's decltype/constexpr. This revealed many holes in the enum_flags API. For example, the f1 assignment below currently incorrectly fails to compile: enum_flags<flags> f1 = FLAG1; enum_flags<flags> f2 = FLAG2 | f1; The unit tests also revealed that this useful use case doesn't work: enum flag { FLAG1 = 1, FLAG2 = 2 }; enum_flags<flag> src = FLAG1; enum_flags<flag> f1 = condition ? src : FLAG2; It fails to compile because enum_flags<flag> and flag are convertible to each other. Turns out that making enum_flags be implicitly convertible to the backing raw enum type was not a good idea. If we make it convertible to the underlying type instead, we fix that ternary operator use case, and, we find cases throughout the codebase that should be using the enum_flags but were using the raw backing enum instead. So it's a good change overall. Also, several operators were missing. These holes and more are plugged by this patch, by reworking how the enum_flags operators are implemented, and making use of C++11's feature of being able to delete methods/functions. There are cases in gdb/compile/ where we need to call a function in a C plugin API that expects the raw enum. To address cases like that, this adds a "raw()" method to enum_flags. This way we can keep using the safer enum_flags to construct the value, and then be explicit when we need to get at the raw enum. This makes most of the enum_flags operators constexpr. Beyond enabling more compiler optimizations and enabling the new unit tests, this has other advantages, like making it possible to use operator| with enum_flags values in switch cases, where only compile-time constants are allowed: enum_flags<flags> f = FLAG1 | FLAG2; switch (f) { case FLAG1 | FLAG2: break; } Currently that fails to compile. It also switches to a different mechanism of enabling the global operators. The current mechanism isn't namespace friendly, the new one is. It also switches to C++11-style SFINAE -- instead of wrapping the return type in a SFINAE-friently structure, we use an unnamed template parameter. I.e., this: template <typename enum_type, typename = is_enum_flags_enum_type_t<enum_type>> enum_type operator& (enum_type e1, enum_type e2) instead of: template <typename enum_type> typename enum_flags_type<enum_type>::type operator& (enum_type e1, enum_type e2) Note that the static_assert inside operator~() was converted to a couple overloads (signed vs unsigned), because static_assert is too late for SFINAE-based tests, which is important for the CHECK_VALID unit tests. Add a selftest that detects a 'corrupted' command tree structure in GDB.
The GDB data structure that records the GDB commands is made of 'struct cmd_list_element' defined in cli-decode.h. A cmd_list_element has various pointers to other cmd_list_element structures, All these pointers are together building a graph of commands. However, when following the 'next' and '*prefixlist' pointers of cmd_list_element, the structure must better be a tree. If such pointers do not form a tree, then some other elements of cmd_list_element cannot get a correct semantic. In particular, the prefixname has no correct meaning if the same prefix command can be reached via 2 different paths. This commit introduces a selftest that detects (at least some cases of) errors leading to 'next' and '*prefixlist' not giving a tree structure. Compare iterators, not values, in filtered_iterator::operator{==,!=}
The == and != operators on filtered_iterator are not doing the right thing, they compare values pointed by the wrapped iterators instead of comparing the iterators themselves. As a result, operator== will return true if the two iterators point to two equal values at different positions. operator!= will fail similarly. Also, this causes it to deference past-the-end iterators when doing. For example, in for (iter = ...; iter != end_iter; ++iter) the != comparison dereferences end_iter. I don't think this should happen. I don't think it's a problem today, given that we only use filtered_iterator to wrap linked lists of threads and inferiors. Dereferencing past-the-end iterators of these types is not fatal, it just returns NULL, which is not a value we otherwise find in the lists. But in other contexts, it could become problematic. Fix another build failure in tui-selftests.c
Christian had emailed me to say that the TUI unit test broke the mingw build, but I erroneously thought this was fixed by the earlier patch that made the test body conditional on the TUI being built. However, I was wrong about this -- tui-selftests.c unconditionally includes tui-winsource.h, which fails if curses is not available. This patch fixes the build problem by moving this include into the "#ifdef TUI" section. Handle %I64d in format_pieces
We found a bug internally where gdb would crash while disassembling a certain instruction. This was tracked down to the handling of %I64d in format_pieces. format_pieces will convert %ll to %I64d on mingw -- so format_pieces should also handle parsing this format. In this patch, I've made the parsing unconditional, since I think it is harmless to accept extra formats. I've also taken the opportunity to convert the length modifier test to a "switch". gdb_vecs.h: Avoid self move assign
While working on another patch I ran into an issue with unordered_remove (in gdb_vecs.h), where removing the last item of the vector can cause a self move assign. When compiling the C++ standard library in debug mode (with -D_GLIBCXX_DEBUG=1) this causes an error to trigger. I've fixed the issue in this patch and provided a unit test. The provided unit test includes an assignment operator which checks for self move assign, this removes the need to compile with -D_GLIBCXX_DEBUG=1 in order to spot the bug. Introduce gdb-specific %p format suffixes
This introduces a few gdb-specific %p format suffixes. This is useful for emitting gdb-specific output in an ergonomic way. It also yields code that is more i18n-friendly. The comment before ui_out::message explains the details. Note that the tests had to change a little. When using one of the gdb printf functions with styling, there can be spurious style changes emitted to the output. This did not seem worthwhile to fix, as the low-level output functions are rather spaghetti-ish already, and I didn't want to make them even worse. This change also necessitated adding support for "*" as precision and width in format_pieces. Add a selftest that checks documentation invariants.
Several approaches were discussed (mail or irc) to verify the invariants of the GDB help documentation : checking with apropos ., modifying add_cmd to do the check and output a warning, implement maintenance check-doc. A selftest was finally chosen as: * this can be run on demand, including by users if they want to check user defined commands. * it does not interact with the normal behaviour of apropos, define, python, ... (such as output warnings when a user defines a command help that does not respect the doc). * when the selftest runs, it checks the user defined and python defined commands currently defined. gdb/ChangeLog * unittests/help-doc-selftests.c: New file. * Makefile.in: Add the new file. |

Rename common to gdbsupport
This is the next patch in the ongoing series to move gdbsever to the top level. This patch just renames the "common" directory. The idea is to do this move in two parts: first rename the directory (this patch), then move the directory to the top. This approach makes the patches a bit more tractable. I chose the name "gdbsupport" for the directory. However, as this patch was largely written by sed, we could pick a new name without too much difficulty. Delete parse_flags/parse_flags_qcs
Now that "thread/frame apply" have been converted to the gdb::option framework, these functions are no longer used. For a while, I thought about keeping the unit tests, by making a local version of parse_flags_qcs in the unit tests file. But all that would really test that is used by GDB itself, is the validate_flags_qcs function. So in the end, I went through all the unit tests, and converted any that wasn't already covered to gdb.base/options.exp tests. On MS-Windows, define _WIN32_WINNT in a single common place.
This changeset defines _WIN32_WINNT to at least 0x0501, the level of Windows XP, unless defined to a higher level, in a single place. It then removes all the overrides of _WIN32_WINNT in individual files as no longer needed. Rename gdb exception types
This renames the gdb exception types. The old types were only needed due to the macros in common-exception.h that are now gone. Make exceptions use std::string and be self-managing

Add a new function child_path.
child_path returns a pointer to the first component in a child path that comes after a parent path. Fix year range in unittests/.../char/empty.cc copyright header
The year range in the copyright header of that file was incorrect: // Copyright (C) 3 Free Software Foundation, Inc. Update copyright year range in all GDB files.
This commit applies all changes made after running the gdb/copyright.py script. Note that one file was flagged by the script, due to an invalid copyright header (gdb/unittests/basic_string_view/element_access/char/empty.cc). As the file was copied from GCC's libstdc++-v3 testsuite, this commit leaves this file untouched for the time being; a patch to fix the header was sent to gcc-patches first. gdb/ChangeLog: Update copyright year range in all GDB files. |

Fix compile error with clang 3.8

invoke_xmethod & array_view
This replaces more pointer+length with gdb::array_view. This time, around invoke_xmethod, and then propagating the fallout around, which inevitably leaks to the overload resolution code. There are several places in the code that want to grab a slice of an array, by advancing the array pointer, and decreasing the length pointer. This patch introduces a pair of new gdb::array_view::slice(...) methods to make that convenient and clear. Use gdb:array_view in call_function_by_hand & friends
This replaces a few uses of pointer+length with gdb::array_view, in call_function_by_hand and related code. Unfortunately, due to -Wnarrowing, there are places where we can't brace-initialize an gdb::array_view without an ugly-ish cast. To avoid the cast, this patch introduces a gdb::make_array_view function. Unit tests included. This patch in isolation may not look so interesting, due to gdb::make_array_view uses, but I think it's still worth it. Some of the gdb::make_array_view calls disappear down the series, and others could be eliminated with more (non-trivial) gdb::array_view detangling/conversion (e.g. code around eval_call). Move copy_bitwise unittests to own unittest file

Do not reopen temporary files
The current callers of mkostemp close the file descriptor and then re-open it with fopen. It seemed better to me to continue to use the already-opened file descriptor, so this patch rearranges the code a little in order to do so. Use mkostemp, not mkstemp
I noticed that gdb could leak file descriptors coming from mkstemp. This patch fixes the problem by importing the gnulib mkostemp instead, and then changing gdb to pass O_CLOEXEC. A small gnulib patch was needed. Simple -Wshadow=local fixes
This fixes all the straightforward -Wshadow=local warnings in gdb. A few standard approaches are used here: * Renaming an inner (or outer, but more commonly inner) variable; * Lowering a declaration to avoid a clash; * Moving a declaration into a more inner scope to avoid a clash, including the special case of moving a declaration into a loop header. Don't check HAVE_UNISTD_H
I noticed some spots that were checking HAVE_UNISTD_H. There is no need to do this, as <unistd.h> is unconditionally included in many places in gdb.
