e0700ba44c gdb: make string-like set show commands use std::string variable
String-like settings (var_string, var_filename, var_optional_filename,
var_string_noescape) currently take a pointer to a `char *` storage
variable (typically global) that holds the setting's value. I'd like to
"mordernize" this by changing them to use an std::string for storage.

An obvious reason is that string operations on std::string are often
easier to write than with C strings. And they avoid having to do any
manual memory management.

Another interesting reason is that, with `char *`, nullptr and an empty
string often both have the same meaning of "no value". String settings
are initially nullptr (unless initialized otherwise). But when doing
"set foo" (where `foo` is a string setting), the setting now points to
an empty string. For example, solib_search_path is nullptr at startup,
but points to an empty string after doing "set solib-search-path". This
leads to some code that needs to check for both to check for "no value".
Or some code that converts back and forth between NULL and "" when
getting or setting the value. I find this very error-prone, because it
is very easy to forget one or the other. With std::string, we at least
know that the variable is not "NULL". There is only one way of
representing an empty string setting, that is with an empty string.

I was wondering whether the distinction between NULL and "" would be
important for some setting, but it doesn't seem so. If that ever
happens, it would be more C++-y and self-descriptive to use
optional<string> anyway.

Actually, there's one spot where this distinction mattered, it's in
init_history, for the test gdb.base/gdbinit-history.exp.  init_history
sets the history filename to the default ".gdb_history" if it sees that
the setting was never set - if history_filename is nullptr. If
history_filename is an empty string, it means the setting was explicitly
cleared, so it leaves it as-is. With the change to std::string, this
distinction doesn't exist anymore. This can be fixed by moving the code
that chooses a good default value for history_filename to
_initialize_top. This is ran before -ex commands are processed, so an
-ex command can then clear that value if needed (what
gdb.base/gdbinit-history.exp tests).

Another small improvement, in my opinion is that we can now easily
give string parameters initial values, by simply initializing the global
variables, instead of xstrdup-ing it in the _initialize function.

In Python and Guile, when registering a string-like parameter, we
allocate (with new) an std::string that is owned by the param_smob (in
Guile) and the parmpy_object (in Python) objects.

This patch started by changing all relevant add_setshow_* commands to
take an `std::string *` instead of a `char **` and fixing everything
that failed to build. That includes of course all string setting
variable and their uses.

string_option_def now uses an std::string also, because there's a
connection between options and settings (see
add_setshow_cmds_for_options).

The add_path function in source.c is really complex and twisted, I'd
rather not try to change it to work on an std::string right now.
Instead, I added an overload that copies the std:string to a `char *`
and back. This means more copying, but this is not used in a hot path
at all, so I think it is acceptable.

13084383e8 gdbsupport: make gdb_open_cloexec return scoped_fd
Make gdb_open_cloexec return a scoped_fd, to encourage using automatic
management of the file descriptor closing. Except in the most trivial
cases, I changed the callers to just release the fd, which retains their
existing behavior. That will allow the transition to using scoped_fd
more to go gradually, one caller at a time.

8ddf46454a gdb/solib: Refactor scan_dyntag
scan_dyntag is unnecessarily duplicated in solib-svr4.c and solib-dsbt.c.

Move this function to solib.c and rename it to gdb_bfd_scan_elf_dyntag.
Also add it to solib.h so it is included in both solib-svr4 and solib-dsbt.

e2b9ea4bbb libthread_db initialization changes related to upcoming glibc-2.34
This commit makes some adjustments to accomodate the upcoming
glibc-2.34 release. Beginning with glibc-2.34, functionality formerly
contained in libpthread has been moved to libc. For the time being,
libpthread.so still exists in the file system, but it won't show up in
ldd output and therefore won't be able to trigger initialization of
libthread_db related code.  E.g...

Fedora 34 / glibc-2.33.9000:

[kev@f34-2 gdb]$ ldd testsuite/outputs/gdb.threads/tls/tls
	linux-vdso.so.1 (0x00007ffcf94fa000)
	libstdc++.so.6 => /lib64/libstdc++.so.6 (0x00007ff0ba9af000)
	libm.so.6 => /lib64/libm.so.6 (0x00007ff0ba8d4000)
	libgcc_s.so.1 => /lib64/libgcc_s.so.1 (0x00007ff0ba8b9000)
	libc.so.6 => /lib64/libc.so.6 (0x00007ff0ba6c6000)
	/lib64/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2 (0x00007ff0babf0000)

Fedora 34 / glibc-2.33:

[kev@f34-1 gdb]$ ldd testsuite/outputs/gdb.threads/tls/tls
	linux-vdso.so.1 (0x00007fff32dc0000)
	libpthread.so.0 => /lib64/libpthread.so.0 (0x00007f815f6de000)
	libstdc++.so.6 => /lib64/libstdc++.so.6 (0x00007f815f4bf000)
	libm.so.6 => /lib64/libm.so.6 (0x00007f815f37b000)
	libgcc_s.so.1 => /lib64/libgcc_s.so.1 (0x00007f815f360000)
	libc.so.6 => /lib64/libc.so.6 (0x00007f815f191000)
	/lib64/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2 (0x00007f815f721000)

Note that libpthread is missing from the ldd output for the
glibc-2.33.9000 machine.

This means that (unless we happen to think of some entirely different
mechanism), we'll now need to potentially match "libc" in addition to
"libpthread" as libraries which might be thread libraries. This
accounts for the change made in solib.c. Note that the new code
attempts to match "/libc." via strstr(). That trailing dot (".")
avoids inadvertently matching libraries such as libcrypt (and
all the other many libraries which begin with "libc").

To avoid attempts to load libthread_db when encountering older
versions of libc, we now attempt to find "pthread_create" (which is a
symbol that we'd expect to be in any pthread library) in the
associated objfile. This accounts for the changes in
linux-thread-db.c.

I think that other small adjustments will need to be made elsewhere
too. I've been working through regressions on my glibc-2.33.9000
machine; I've fixed some fairly "obvious" changes in the testsuite
(which are in other commits). For the rest, it's not yet clear to me
whether the handful of remaining failures represent a problem in glibc
or gdb. I'm still investigating, however, I'll note that these are
problems that I only see on my glibc-2.33.9000 machine.

gdb/ChangeLog:

	* solib.c (libpthread_name_p): Match "libc" in addition
	to "libpthread".
	* linux-thread-db.c (libpthread_objfile_p): New function.
	(libpthread_name_p): Adjust preexisting callers to use
	libpthread_objfile_p().

5e84b7eefb gdb: remove add_alias_cmd overload that accepts a string
Same idea as previous patch, but for add_alias_cmd. Remove the overload
that accepts the target command as a string (the target command name),
leaving only the one that takes the cmd_list_element.

gdb/ChangeLog:

	* command.h (add_alias_cmd): Accept target as
	cmd_list_element.  Update callers.

42a4fec513 gdb: add inferior_execd observable
I want to add another action (clearing displaced stepping state) that
happens when an inferior execs. I think it would be cleaner to have an
observer for this event, rather than have infrun know about each other
sub-component.

Replace the calls to solib_create_inferior_hook and
jit_inferior_created_hook in follow_exec by observers.

gdb/ChangeLog:

	* observable.h (inferior_execd): Declare new observable.
	* observable.c (inferior_execd): Declare new observable.
	* infrun.c (follow_exec): Notify inferior_execd observer.
	* jit.c (jit_inferior_created_hook): Make static.
	(_initialize_jit): Register inferior_execd observer.
	* jit.h (jit_inferior_created_hook): Remove declaration.
	* solib.c (_initialize_solib): Register inferior_execd observer.

dda83cd783 gdb, gdbserver, gdbsupport: fix leading space vs tabs issues
Many spots incorrectly use only spaces for indentation (for example,
there are a lot of spots in ada-lang.c). I've always found it awkward
when I needed to edit one of these spots: do I keep the original wrong
indentation, or do I fix it? What if the lines around it are also
wrong, do I fix them too? I probably don't want to fix them in the same
patch, to avoid adding noise to my patch.

So I propose to fix as much as possible once and for all (hopefully).

One typical counter argument for this is that it makes code archeology
more difficult, because git-blame will show this commit as the last
change for these lines. My counter counter argument is: when
git-blaming, you often need to do "blame the file at the parent commit"
anyway, to go past some other refactor that touched the line you are
interested in, but is not the change you are looking for. So you
already need a somewhat efficient way to do this.

Using some interactive tool, rather than plain git-blame, makes this
trivial. For example, I use "tig blame <file>", where going back past
the commit that changed the currently selected line is one keystroke.
It looks like Magit in Emacs does it too (though I've never used it).
Web viewers of Github and Gitlab do it too. My point is that it won't
really make archeology more difficult.

The other typical counter argument is that it will cause conflicts with
existing patches. That's true... but it's a one time cost, and those
are not conflicts that are difficult to resolve. I have also tried "git
rebase --ignore-whitespace", it seems to work well. Although that will
re-introduce the faulty indentation, so one needs to take care of fixing
the indentation in the patch after that (which is easy).

3769e2277d Change add_target_sections to method on program_space
This changes add_target_sections to be a method on program_space.
Like the earlier change to remove_target_sections, this makes sense
because this function is manipulating data that is stored on the
program space.

d7a78e5c41 Change target_section_table to std::vector alias
Because target_section_table only holds a vector, and because it is
used in an "open" way, this patch makes it just be an alias for the
std::vector specialization. This makes the code less wordy. If we do
ever want to add more specialized behavior to this type, it's simple
enough to convert it back to a struct with the few needed methods
implied by this change.

bb2a67773c Use a std::vector in target_section_table
This changes target_section_table to wrap a std::vector. This
simplifies some code, and also enables the simplifications coming in
the subsequent patches.

Note that for solib, I chose to have it use a pointer to a
target_section_table. This is more convoluted than would be ideal,
but I didn't want to convert solib to new/delete as a prerequisite for
this series.

6c2659886f gdb: add back declarations for _initialize functions
I'd like to enable the -Wmissing-declarations warning. However, it
warns for every _initialize function, for example:

      CXX    dcache.o
    /home/smarchi/src/binutils-gdb/gdb/dcache.c: In function ‘void _initialize_dcache()’:
    /home/smarchi/src/binutils-gdb/gdb/dcache.c:688:1: error: no previous declaration for ‘void _initialize_dcache()’ [-Werror=missing-declarations]
     _initialize_dcache (void)
     ^~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The only practical way forward I found is to add back the declarations,
which were removed by this commit:

        Remove unnecessary function prototypes.

functions, but if anybody has a better solution for this, I'll be happy
to use it.

268e4f0914 Make the objfile destructor private
The idea behind this is that, in the long run, some code will need to
be able to hold onto an objfile after it is unlinked from the program
space. In particular, this is needed for some functionality to be
moved to worker threads -- otherwise the objfile can be deleted while
still in use.

So, this makes ~objfile private, replacing it with an "unlink" method,
making it more obvious which operation is intended at the calling
points.

e0eac551da Remove some includes of readline.h
I went through most of the spots that include readline.h and, when
appropriate, either removed the include or changed it to include
tilde.h.

Note that remote-sim.c and bsd-kvm.c could probably include tilde.h
instead, but I did not change these. I think I can't build the
latter, and I didn't want to set up a sim build for the former.

Tested by rebuilding.

626ca2c06f Replace solib_global_lookup with gdbarch_iterate_over_objfiles_in_search_order
All implementations of either function use it for the same purpose (except
Darwin, which is a no-op): to prefer a symbol in the current objfile over
symbols with the same name in other objfiles. There does not seem to be a
reason to have both mechanisms for that purpose.

268a13a5a3 Rename common to gdbsupport
This is the next patch in the ongoing series to move gdbsever to the
top level.

This patch just renames the "common" directory. The idea is to do
this move in two parts: first rename the directory (this patch), then
move the directory to the top. This approach makes the patches a bit
more tractable.

I chose the name "gdbsupport" for the directory. However, as this
patch was largely written by sed, we could pick a new name without too
much difficulty.

Tested by the buildbot.

230d2906b9 Rename gdb exception types
This renames the gdb exception types. The old types were only needed
due to the macros in common-exception.h that are now gone.

The intermediate layer of gdb_exception_RETURN_MASK_ALL did not seem
needed, so this patch removes it entirely.

a70b814420 Rewrite TRY/CATCH
This rewrites gdb's TRY/CATCH to plain C++ try/catch. The patch was
largely written by script, though one change (to a comment in

6640a367bf Remove null_block_symbol
This removes null_block_symbol. It seemed simpler to me to change
initializations and returns to use value initialization rather than
null_block_symbol. This also fixes up a few spots where
initialization was done piecemeal.

eefba3da27 Change minimal_symbol inheritance
This changes struct minimal_symbol to inherit from general_symbol_info
and updates various macros to cope.

Because MSYMBOL_SET_LANGUAGE and MSYMBOL_SET_NAMES were only used from
a single spot, this patch removes them in favor of simply inlining
their definitions. I consider this to be somewhat cleaner, not least
because the "phony polymorphism" provided by such macros is not useful
in practice.

gdb/ChangeLog
2019-03-15  Tom Tromey  <tom@tromey.com>

	* symtab.h (struct minimal_symbol): Derive from
	general_symbol_info.

	(MSYMBOL_LINKAGE_NAME, MSYMBOL_DEMANGLED_NAME)
	(MSYMBOL_SEARCH_NAME): Update.
	(MSYMBOL_SET_LANGUAGE, MSYMBOL_SET_NAMES): Remove.
	* solib.c (gdb_bfd_lookup_symbol_from_symtab): Don't use memset.
	* minsyms.c (minimal_symbol_reader::record_full): Update.

42a4f53d2b Update copyright year range in all GDB files.
This commit applies all changes made after running the gdb/copyright.py
script.

Note that one file was flagged by the script, due to an invalid
copyright header
(gdb/unittests/basic_string_view/element_access/char/empty.cc).
As the file was copied from GCC's libstdc++-v3 testsuite, this commit
leaves this file untouched for the time being; a patch to fix the header
was sent to gcc-patches first.

gdb/ChangeLog:

	Update copyright year range in all GDB files.

29f9434081 Remove interp_ui_out
The function interp_ui_out simply calls the interp_ui_out method.
However, if it is passed a NULL interpreter, it first finds the
current interpreter. I believe, though, that NULL is never passed
here, and I think it's simpler to just remove this function and
require callers to be more explicit.

76727919ce Convert observers to C++
This converts observers from using a special source-generating script
to be plain C++. This version of the patch takes advantage of C++11
by using std::function and variadic templates; incorporates Pedro's
patches; and renames the header file to "observable.h" (this change
eliminates the need for a clean rebuild).

Note that Pedro's patches used a template lambda in tui-hooks.c, but
this failed to compile on some buildbot instances (presumably due to
differing C++ versions); I replaced this with an ordinary template
function.

Regression tested on the buildbot.
