9dec38d3b1 [gdb/symtab] Support -readnow during reread
When running test-case gdb.base/cached-source-file.exp with target board
readnow, we run into:
...
FAIL: gdb.base/cached-source-file.exp: rerun program (the program exited)
...

The problem is that when rereading, the readnow is ignored.

Fix this by copying the readnow handling code from symbol_file_add_with_addrs
to reread_symbols.

Tested on x86_64-linux.

3456e70c9d Use unique_xmalloc_ptr<char> when demangling
I noticed that some methods in language_defn could use
unique_xmalloc_ptr<char> rather than a plain 'char *'. This patch
implements this change, fixing up the fallout and changing
gdb_demangle to also return this type. In one spot, std::string is
used to simplify some related code, and in another, an auto_obstack is
used to avoid manual management.

Regression tested on x86-64 Fedora 34.

2c71f639a0 [gdb/ada] Handle artificial local symbols
With current master and gcc 7.5.0/8.5.0, we have this timeout:
...
(gdb) print s^M
Multiple matches for s^M
[0] cancel^M
[1] s at src/gdb/testsuite/gdb.ada/interface/foo.adb:20^M
[2] s at src/gdb/testsuite/gdb.ada/interface/foo.adb:?^M
> FAIL: gdb.ada/interface.exp: print s (timeout)
...

[ The FAIL doesn't reproduce with gcc 9.3.1. This difference in
behaviour bisects to gcc commit d70ba0c10de.

The FAIL with earlier gcc bisects to gdb commit ba8694b650. ]

The FAIL is caused by gcc generating this debug info describing a named
artificial variable:
...
 <2><1204>: Abbrev Number: 31 (DW_TAG_variable)
    <1205>   DW_AT_name        : s.14
    <1209>   DW_AT_type        : <0x1213>
    <120d>   DW_AT_artificial  : 1
    <120d>   DW_AT_location    : 5 byte block: 91 e0 7d 23 18   \
      (DW_OP_fbreg: -288; DW_OP_plus_uconst: 24)
...

An easy way to fix this would be to simply not put named artificial variables
into the symbol table. However, that causes regressions for Ada. It relies
on being able to get the value from such variables, using a named reference.

Fix this instead by marking the symbol as artificial, and:
- ignoring such symbols in ada_resolve_variable, which fixes the FAIL
- ignoring such ada symbols in do_print_variable_and_value, which prevents
  them from showing up in "info locals"

Note that a fix for the latter was submitted here (
https://sourceware.org/pipermail/gdb-patches/2008-January/054994.html ), and
this patch borrows from it.

Tested on x86_64-linux.

9be259865c gdb: introduce iterator_range, remove next_adapter
I was always a bit confused by next_adapter, because it kind of mixes
the element type and the iterator type. In reality, it is not much more
than a class that wraps two iterators (begin and end). However, it
assumes that:

 - you can construct the begin iterator by passing a pointer to the
   first element of the iterable
 - you can default-construct iterator to make the end iterator

I think that by generalizing it a little bit, we can re-use it at more
places.

Rename it to "iterator_range". I think it describes a bit better: it's
a range made by wrapping a begin and end iterator. Move it to its own
file, since it's not related to next_iterator anymore.

iterator_range has two constructors. The variadic one, where arguments
are forwarded to construct the underlying begin iterator. The end
iterator is constructed through default construction. This is a
generalization of what we have today.

There is another constructor which receives already constructed begin
and end iterators, useful if the end iterator can't be obtained by
default-construction. Or, if you wanted to make a range that does not
end at the end of the container, you could pass any iterator as the
"end".

This generalization allows removing some "range" classes, like
all_inferiors_range. These classes existed only to pass some arguments
when constructing the begin iterator. With iterator_range, those same
arguments are passed to the iterator_range constructed and then
forwarded to the constructed begin iterator.

There is a small functional difference in how iterator_range works
compared to next_adapter. next_adapter stored the pointer it received
as argument and constructeur an iterator in the `begin` method.
iterator_range constructs the begin iterator and stores it as a member.
Its `begin` method returns a copy of that iterator.

With just iterator_range, uses of next_adapter<foo> would be replaced
with:

  using foo_iterator = next_iterator<foo>;
  using foo_range = iterator_range<foo_iterator>;

However, I added a `next_range` wrapper as a direct replacement for
next_adapter<foo>. IMO, next_range is a slightly better name than
next_adapter.

The rest of the changes are applications of this new class.

bd742128ba gdb: change info sources to group results by objfile
Currently the 'info sources' command lists all of the known source
files together, regardless of their source, e.g. here is a session
debugging a test application that makes use of a shared library:

  (gdb) info sources
  Source files for which symbols have been read in:

  /tmp/info-sources/test.c, /usr/include/stdc-predef.h,
  /tmp/info-sources/header.h, /tmp/info-sources/helper.c

  Source files for which symbols will be read in on demand:

  (gdb)

In this commit I change the format of the 'info sources' results so
that the results are grouped by the object file that uses that source
file. Here's the same session with the new output format:

  (gdb) info sources
  /tmp/info-sources/test.x:

  /tmp/info-sources/test.c, /usr/include/stdc-predef.h,
  /tmp/info-sources/header.h

  /lib64/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2:
  (Objfile has no debug information.)

  system-supplied DSO at 0x7ffff7fcf000:
  (Objfile has no debug information.)

  /tmp/info-sources/libhelper.so:

  /tmp/info-sources/helper.c, /usr/include/stdc-predef.h,
  /tmp/info-sources/header.h

  /lib64/libc.so.6:
  (Objfile has no debug information.)

  (gdb)

Notice that in the new output some source files are repeated,
e.g. /tmp/info-sources/header.h, as multiple objfiles use this source
file.

Further, some object files are tagged with the message '(Objfile has
no debug information.)', it is also possible to see the message '(Full
debug information has not yet been read for this file.)', which is
printed when some symtabs within an objfile have not yet been
expanded.

All of the existing regular expression based filtering still works.

An original version of this patch added the new format as an option to
'info sources', however, it was felt that the new layout was so much
better than the old style that GDB should just switch to the new
result format completely.

gdb/ChangeLog:

	* NEWS: Mention changes to 'info sources'.
	* symtab.c (info_sources_filter::print): Delete.
	(struct output_source_filename_data) <print_header>: Delete
	declaration.  <printed_filename_p>: New member function.
	(output_source_filename_data::print_header): Delete.
	(info_sources_worker): Update group-by-objfile style output to
	make it CLI suitable, simplify non-group-by-objfile now this is
	only used from the MI.
	(info_sources_command): Make group-by-objfile be the default for
	CLI info sources command.
	* symtab.h (struct info_sources_filter) <print>: Delete.

1fb1ce02fc gdb/mi: add new --group-by-objfile flag for -file-list-exec-source-files
This commit adds a new option '--group-by-objfile' to the MI command
-file-list-exec-source-files. With this option the output format is
changed; instead of a single list of source files the results are now
a list of objfiles. For each objfile all of the source files
associated with that objfile are listed.

Here is an example of the new output format taken from the
documentation (the newlines are added just for readability):

  -file-list-exec-source-files --group-by-objfile
  ^done,files=[{filename="/tmp/info-sources/test.x",
                debug-info="fully-read",
                sources=[{file="test.c",
                          fullname="/tmp/info-sources/test.c",
                          debug-fully-read="true"},
                         {file="/usr/include/stdc-predef.h",
                          fullname="/usr/include/stdc-predef.h",
                          debug-fully-read="true"},
                         {file="header.h",
                          fullname="/tmp/info-sources/header.h",
                          debug-fully-read="true"}]},
               {filename="/lib64/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2",
                debug-info="none",
                sources=[]},
               {filename="system-supplied DSO at 0x7ffff7fcf000",
                debug-info="none",
                sources=[]},
               {filename="/tmp/info-sources/libhelper.so",
                debug-info="fully-read",
                sources=[{file="helper.c",
                          fullname="/tmp/info-sources/helper.c",
                          debug-fully-read="true"},
                         {file="/usr/include/stdc-predef.h",
                          fullname="/usr/include/stdc-predef.h",
                          debug-fully-read="true"},
                         {file="header.h",
                          fullname="/tmp/info-sources/header.h",
                          debug-fully-read="true"}]},
               {filename="/lib64/libc.so.6",
                debug-info="none",
                sources=[]}]

In the above output the 'debug-info' field associated with each
objfile will have one of the values 'none', 'partially-read', or
'fully-read'. For example, /lib64/libc.so.6 has the value 'none',
this indicates that this object file has no debug information
associated with it, unsurprisingly then, the sources list of this
object file is empty.

An object file that was compiled with debug, for example
/tmp/info-sources/libhelper.so, has the value 'fully-read' above
indicating that this object file does have debug information, and the
information is fully read into GDB. At different times this field
might have the value 'partially-read' indicating that that the object
file has debug information, but it has not been fully read into GDB
yet.

Source files can appear at most once for any single objfile, but can
appear multiple times in total, if the same source file is part of
multiple objfiles, for example /tmp/info-sources/header.h in the above
output.

The new output format is hidden behind a command option to ensure that
the default output is unchanged, this ensures backward compatibility.

The behaviour of the CLI "info sources" command is unchanged after
this commit.

0e350a054b gdb/mi: add regexp filtering to -file-list-exec-source-files
This commit extends the existing MI command
-file-list-exec-source-files to provide the same regular expression
based filtering that the equivalent CLI command "info sources"
provides.

The new command syntax is:

  -file-list-exec-source-files [--basename | --dirname] [--] [REGEXP]

All options are optional, which ensures the command is backward
compatible.

As part of this work I have unified the CLI and MI code.

As a result of the unified code I now provide additional information
in the MI command output, there is now a new field 'debug-fully-read'
included with each source file. This field which has the values
'true' or 'false', indicates if the source file is from a compilation
unit that has had its debug information fully read. However, as this
is additional information, a well written front-end should just ignore
this field if it doesn't understand it, so things should still be
backward compatible.

a52d653e91 gdb: delete SYMBOL_SECTION and MSYMBOL_SECTION macros
Delete two more symbol/section related macros. This time it's

dda83cd783 gdb, gdbserver, gdbsupport: fix leading space vs tabs issues
Many spots incorrectly use only spaces for indentation (for example,
there are a lot of spots in ada-lang.c). I've always found it awkward
when I needed to edit one of these spots: do I keep the original wrong
indentation, or do I fix it? What if the lines around it are also
wrong, do I fix them too? I probably don't want to fix them in the same
patch, to avoid adding noise to my patch.

So I propose to fix as much as possible once and for all (hopefully).

One typical counter argument for this is that it makes code archeology
more difficult, because git-blame will show this commit as the last
change for these lines. My counter counter argument is: when
git-blaming, you often need to do "blame the file at the parent commit"
anyway, to go past some other refactor that touched the line you are
interested in, but is not the change you are looking for. So you
already need a somewhat efficient way to do this.

Using some interactive tool, rather than plain git-blame, makes this
trivial. For example, I use "tig blame <file>", where going back past
the commit that changed the currently selected line is one keystroke.
It looks like Magit in Emacs does it too (though I've never used it).
Web viewers of Github and Gitlab do it too. My point is that it won't
really make archeology more difficult.

The other typical counter argument is that it will cause conflicts with
existing patches. That's true... but it's a one time cost, and those
are not conflicts that are difficult to resolve. I have also tried "git
rebase --ignore-whitespace", it seems to work well. Although that will
re-introduce the faulty indentation, so one needs to take care of fixing
the indentation in the patch after that (which is easy).

f75a069335 Demangle function names when disassembling
Andrew Burgess pointed out a regression, which he described in
PR symtab/26270:

================
After commit:

  commit bcfe6157ca (refs/bisect/bad)
  Date:   Fri Apr 24 15:35:01 2020 -0600

      Use the linkage name if it exists

The disassembler no longer demangles function names in its output. So
we see things like this:

  (gdb) disassemble tree_insert
  Dump of assembler code for function _Z11tree_insertP4nodei:
    ....

Instead of this:

  (gdb) disassemble tree_insert
  Dump of assembler code for function tree_insert(node*, int):
    ....

This is because find_pc_partial_function now returns the linkage name
rather than the demangled name.
================

This patch fixes the problem by introducing a new "overload" of
find_pc_partial_function, which returns the general_symbol_info rather
than simply the name. This lets the disassemble command choose which
name to show.

Regression tested on x86-64 Fedora 32.

e08bd6c508 Don't remove C++ aliases from completions if symbol doesn't match
completion_list_add_symbol currently tries to remove C++ function
aliases from the completions match list even if the symbol passed down
wasn't successfully added to the completion list because it didn't
match. I.e., we call cp_canonicalize_string_no_typedefs for each and
every C++ function in the program, which is useful work. This patch
skips that useless work.

	(completion_list_add_symbol): Don't try to remove C++ aliases if
	the symbol didn't match in the first place.
	* symtab.h (completion_list_add_name): Return bool.

596dc4adff Speed up psymbol reading by removing a copy
I noticed that cp_canonicalize_string and friends copy a
unique_xmalloc_ptr to a std::string.  However, this copy isn't
genuinely needed anywhere, and it serves to slow down DWARF psymbol
reading.

This patch removes the copy and updates the callers to adapt.

This speeds up the reader from 1.906 seconds (mean of 10 runs, of gdb
on a copy of itself) to 1.888 seconds (mean of 10 runs, on the same
copy as the first trial).

e0802d5996 Avoid copying in lookup_name_info
lookup_name_info always copies the name that is passed in. However,
normally a copy is not needed. This patch changes this class to avoid
copying. This required changing the "name" method to return something
else; I chose a gdb::string_view, to avoid excessive calls to strlen
in the code using the lookup_name_info. However, as this class does
not allow an arbitrary string_view, I've also added a c_str method
that guarantees a \0-terminated result -- a pedantic difference but
one that respects the string_view contract, IMO.

7b1eff95be [gdb] Print user/includes fields for maint commands
The type struct compunit_symtab contains two fields (disregarding field next)
that express relations with other compunit_symtabs: user and includes.

These fields are currently not printed with "maint info symtabs" and
"maint print symbols".

Fix this such that for "maint info symtabs" we print:
...
   { ((struct compunit_symtab *) 0x23e8450)
     debugformat DWARF 2
     producer (null)
     dirname (null)
     blockvector ((struct blockvector *) 0x23e8590)
+    user ((struct compunit_symtab *) 0x2336280)
+    ( includes
+      ((struct compunit_symtab *) 0x23e85e0)
+      ((struct compunit_symtab *) 0x23e8960)
+    )
         { symtab <unknown> ((struct symtab *) 0x23e85b0)
           fullname (null)
           linetable ((struct linetable *) 0x0)
         }
   }
...

And for "maint print symbols" we print:
...
-Symtab for file <unknown>
+Symtab for file <unknown> at 0x23e85b0
 Read from object file /data/gdb_versions/devel/a.out (0x233ccf0)
 Language: c

 Blockvector:

 block #000, object at 0x23e8530, 0 syms/buckets in 0x0..0x0
   block #001, object at 0x23e84d0 under 0x23e8530, 0 syms/buckets in 0x0..0x0

+Compunit user: 0x2336300
+Compunit include: 0x23e8900
+Compunit include: 0x23dd970
...
Note: for user and includes we don't list the actual compunit_symtab address,
but instead the corresponding symtab address, which allows us to find that
symtab elsewhere in the output (given that we also now print the address of
symtabs).

	* symtab.h (is_main_symtab_of_compunit_symtab): New function.

8c95582da8 gdb: Add support for tracking the DWARF line table is-stmt field
This commit brings support for the DWARF line table is_stmt field to
GDB. The is_stmt field is used by the compiler when a single source
line is split into multiple assembler instructions, especially if the
assembler instructions are interleaved with instruction from other
source lines.

The compiler will set the is_stmt flag false from some instructions
from the source lines, these instructions are not a good place to
insert a breakpoint in order to stop at the source line.
Instructions which are marked with the is_stmt flag true are a good
place to insert a breakpoint for that source line.

Currently GDB ignores all instructions for which is_stmt is false.
This is fine in a lot of cases, however, there are some cases where
this means the debug experience is not as good as it could be.

Consider stopping at a random instruction, currently this instruction
will be attributed to the last line table entry before this point for
which is_stmt was true - as these are the only line table entries that
GDB tracks. This can easily be incorrect in code with even a low
level of optimisation.

With is_stmt tracking in place, when stopping at a random instruction
we now attribute the instruction back to the real source line, even
when is_stmt is false for that instruction in the line table.

When inserting breakpoints we still select line table entries for
which is_stmt is true, so the breakpoint placing behaviour should not
change.

When stepping though code (at the line level, not the instruction
level) we will still stop at instruction where is_stmt is true, I
think this is more likely to be the desired behaviour.

Instruction stepping is, of course, unchanged, stepping one
instruction at a time, but we should now report more accurate line
table information with each instruction step.

The original motivation for this work was a patch posted by Bernd
here:
  https://sourceware.org/ml/gdb-patches/2019-11/msg00792.html

As part of that thread it was suggested that many issues would be
resolved if GDB supported line table views, this isn't something I've
attempted in this patch, though reading the spec, it seems like this
would be a useful feature to support in GDB in the future. The spec
is here:
  http://dwarfstd.org/ShowIssue.php?issue=170427.1

And Bernd gives a brief description of the benefits here:
  https://sourceware.org/ml/gdb-patches/2020-01/msg00147.html

With that all said, I think that there is benefit to having proper
is_stmt support regardless of whether we have views support, so I
think we should consider getting this in first, and then building view
support on top of this.

The gdb.cp/step-and-next-inline.exp test is based off a test proposed
by Bernd Edlinger in this message:
  https://sourceware.org/ml/gdb-patches/2019-12/msg00842.html

6a053cb1ff Change section_offsets to a std::vector
This changes section_offsets to be specialization of a std::vector and
updates all the users. It also removes the ANOFFSET and
SIZEOF_N_SECTION_OFFSETS macros.

Most of this is just a generic sort of cleanup, that reduces the
number of lines of code. However, a couple spots were doing weird
things.

objfile_relocate did:

-      std::vector<struct section_offsets>
-	new_debug_offsets (SIZEOF_N_SECTION_OFFSETS (debug_objfile->num_sections));

... which seems to greatly over-estimate the number of elements
needed.

This appeared in set_objfile_default_section_offset:

-  std::vector<struct section_offsets> offsets (objf->num_sections,
-					       { { offset } });

... which makes sense due to type safety, but is also actively
confusing given that section_offsets was previously also a kind of
vector type.

Tested on x86-64 Fedora 30.

4d4eaa3005 Make symbol_set_names a member function
This also renames it to make it clearer that this is not a cheap
function (to compute_and_set_names). Also renames name to m_name
to make the implementation of the renamed function more readable.

Most of the places that access sym->m_name directly were also changed
to call linkage_name () instead, to make it clearer which name they
are accessing.

This removes symbol_set_language and SYMBOL_SET_LANGUAGE in favor of
a new function general_symbol_info::set_language. symbol and minimal_symbol

c1b5c1ebc9 Use an accessor function for general_symbol_info::language
Also renames the member variable to m_language to make code easier to read
when more functions become member functions.

I was originally hoping to eventually make m_language private (after a few
more patches), but unfortunately then it no longer counts as a POD type,
which means gdbsupport/poison.h won't let us use memset to initialize
this type, which psymtabs rely on to clear padding bytes so that bcache
can work properly.

c2512106f8 gdb/mi: Add -max-results parameter to some -symbol-info-* commands
Adds a new parameter -max-results to -symbol-info-functions,
-symbol-info-variables, -symbol-info-types, and -symbol-info-modules.
This parameter limits the number of results returned.

This change still leaves -symbol-info-module-functions and
-symbol-info-module-variables always returning all results, fixing
these commands is slightly harder.

There's currently no mechanism for the user of these commands to know
if the result list has been truncated if you get back the maximum
number of results, so if there are exactly 10 functions and you call
'-symbol-info-functions --max-results 10' the reply would appear no
different than if you had 20 functions and called with a max of 10.
Right now, if you get back the maximum then you should assume that
there might be more results available.

One other thing to note is that the global_symbol_searcher::search by
default returns SIZE_MAX results, there's no longer a mechanism to
return an unlimited number of results, though hopefully this will not
be a huge issue.

gdb/ChangeLog:

	(sort_search_symbols_remove_dups): Delete.
	(global_symbol_searcher::search): Early exit from search loop when
	we have enough results. Use a std::set to collect the results

470c0b1c9a gdb: Introduce global_symbol_searcher
Introduce a new class to wrap up the parameters needed for the
function search_symbols, which has now become a member function of
this new class.

The motivation is that search_symbols already takes a lot of
parameters, and a future commit is going to add even more. This
commit hopefully makes collecting the state required for a search

6edc43ec32 Don't use class-initialization for the owner union
As reported by PhilippeW, valgrind reports that symtab is uninitialized
when compiling with GCC 4.8.5, which is the default compiler on CentOS 7.

This is apparently a compiler bug fixed in later versions, but to keep
CentOS 7 working, this patch initializes the union explicitly instead of
using a class initializer.

d1aa3cf0bb Remove symbol-related static asserts
commit 3573abe1d added static asserts to ensure that symbol sizes
don't vary. However, this failed to build on Windows, on at least one
ARM platform (see PR build/25182) and internally at AdaCore for PPC.

So, I think it is probably best to just remove these assertions,
effectively reverting 3573abe1d.

Andrew Burgess
165f8965d7 gdb: Add new commands to list module variables and functions
This patch adds two new commands "info module functions" and "info
module variables". These commands list all of the functions and
variables grouped by module and then by file.

For example:

  (gdb) info module functions
  All functions in all modules:

  Module "mod1":

  File /some/path/gdb/testsuite/gdb.fortran/info-types.f90:
  35:	void mod1::__copy_mod1_M1t1(Type m1t1, Type m1t1);
  25:	void mod1::sub_m1_a(integer(kind=4));
  31:	integer(kind=4) mod1::sub_m1_b(void);

  Module "mod2":

  File /some/path/gdb/testsuite/gdb.fortran/info-types.f90:
  41:	void mod2::sub_m2_a(integer(kind=4), logical(kind=4));
  49:	logical(kind=4) mod2::sub_m2_b(real(kind=4));

The new commands take set of flags that allow the output to be
filtered, the user can filter by variable/function name, type, or
containing module.

As GDB doesn't currently track the relationship between a module and
the variables or functions within it in the symbol table, so I filter
based on the module prefix in order to find the functions or variables
in each module. What this makes clear is that a user could get this
same information using "info variables" and simply provide the prefix
themselves, for example:

  (gdb) info module functions -m mod1 _a
  All functions matching regular expression "_a",
  	in all modules matching regular expression "mod1":

  Module "mod1":

  File /some/path/gdb/testsuite/gdb.fortran/info-types.f90:
  25:	void mod1::sub_m1_a(integer(kind=4));

Is similar to:

  (gdb) info functions mod1::.*_a.*
  All functions matching regular expression "mod1::.*_a":

  File /some/path/gdb/testsuite/gdb.fortran/info-types.f90:
  25:	void mod1::sub_m1_a(integer(kind=4));

The benefits I see for a separate command are that the user doesn't
have to think (or know) about the module prefix format, nor worry
about building a proper regexp. The user can also easily scan across
modules without having to build complex regexps.

The new function search_module_symbols is extern in this patch despite
only being used within symtab.c, this is because a later patch in this
series will also be using this function from outside symtab.c.

This patch is a new implementation of an idea originally worked on by
Mark O'Connor, Chris January, David Lecomber, and Xavier Oro from ARM.

59c35742fb gdb/fortran: Add new 'info modules' command
Add a new command 'info modules' that lists all of the modules GDB
knows about from the debug information.

A module is a debugging entity in the DWARF defined with
DW_TAG_module, currently Fortran is known to use this tag for its
modules. I'm not aware of any other language that currently makes use
of DW_TAG_module.

The output style is similar to the 'info type' output:

    (gdb) info modules
    All defined modules:

    File info-types.f90:
    16:     mod1
    24:     mod2
    (gdb)

Where the user is told the file the module is defined in and, on the
left hand side, the line number at which the module is defined along
with the name of the module.

This patch is a new implementation of an idea originally worked on by
Mark O'Connor, Chris January, David Lecomber, and Xavier Oro from ARM.

31edb80295 Change some arguments to gdb::string_view instead of name+len
Just some code cleanup. This change has a few benefits:
- Shorter argument list in the functions
- If the caller needs to calculate the string, they no longer
  need to explicitly call strlen
- It is easy to pass std::string to this (done in one place
  currently)

This also updates a couple of places that were passing 0/1 to
a bool parameter.
