496afd1705 elf: Add -z unique-symbol to avoid duplicated local symbol names
The symbol string table in the .symtab section is optional and cosmetic.
The contents of the .symtab section have no impact on run-time execution.
The symbol names in the symbol string table help distinguish addresses at
different locations.  Add a linker option, -z unique-symbol, to avoid
duplicated local symbol names in the symbol string table.

This feature was well received by the livepatch maintainers.  It not only
solves the duplicated local symbol name problem, but also would allow
livepatch to more precisely locate duplicate symbols in general for
patching.

7ba115508a PR26580, Size and alignment of commons vs as-needed shared lib
Two pieces to this puzzle:
1) Revert HJ's fix for PR13250 so that size and alignment isn't
   sticky, instead attack the real underlying problem that
   _bfd_generic_link_add_one_symbol does the wrong thing in making a
   common section in a shared library bfd.
2) Save and restore common u.c.p fields, which hold the section and
   alignment.

A better fix for (2) would be to throw away all of that horrible code
saving and restoring the hash table when loading as-needed library
symbols, and instead do a scan over as-needed library symbols before
adding anything.

1e3b96fd6c Allow plugin syms to mark as-needed shared libs needed
We must tell LTO about symbols in all shared libraries loaded.  That
means we can't load extra shared libraries after LTO recompilation, at
least, not those that affect the set of symbols that LTO cares about,
the IR symbols.

This change will likely result in complaints about --as-needed
libraries being loaded unnecessarily, but being correct is more
important than being optimal.  One of the PR15146 tests regresses, and
while that could be hidden by disabling the missing dso message by
making it conditional on h->root.non_ir_ref_regular, that would just
be sweeping a problem under the rug.

a896df97b9 PR26314, Linking LTO objects with symbols from static and shared libraries
gcc -O2 -g -o ar -Wl,--as-needed arparse.o arlex.o ar.o not-ranlib.o arsup.o rename.o binemul.o emul_vanilla.o bucomm.o version.o filemode.o libbfd-2.35-3.fc33.so libiberty.a -Wl,-R,.

All of the above .o files are lto, leading to libbfd-2.35-3.fc33.so
not being found needed when loading the IR objects.  That's problem
number one:  We exclude IR references when deciding a shared library
is needed.  See PR15146.  Thus none of the libbfd.so symbols are
loaded before libiberty.a is scanned, and libbfd.so contains copies of
libiberty.a functions.  We ought to be using the libbfd.so copies
rather than extracting them from the archive (an object is extracted
even to satisfy IR symbols).  After lto recompilation, libbfd.so is of
course found to be needed and loaded.  But that causes more problems.
The lto recompilation didn't see symbol references from libbfd.so and
variables like _xexit_cleanup are made local in the recompiled
objects.  Oops, two copies of them.  Finally, those silly undefined
symbols in the lto output debug files, combined with definitions in
both libbfd.so and IR objects result in IR symbols being made
dynamic.

The main fix here is to revert the PR15146 change to
elf_link_add_object_symbols.

c77cb2a09c MIPS: Make the IRIX naming of local section symbols consistent
Make the MIPS/IRIX naming of local section symbols consistent between
files produced by generic ELF code and ELF linker code, complementing
commit 174fd7f955 ("New bfd elf hook: force naming of local section
symbols"), <https://sourceware.org/ml/binutils/2004-02/msg00072.html>.

Local section symbols have no names in the standard ELF gABI, however
the lack of a name causes problems with IRIX's MIPSpro linker.  To work
around the issue we give them names, however we do that in generic ELF
code only, based on what the `elf_backend_name_local_section_symbols'
hook returns if present.  That makes objects created by GAS or `objdump'
work correctly, however not ones created by `ld -r'.  That would not
normally cause issues with IRIX systems using GAS and `objdump' only
with the MIPSpro linker, however if GNU LD was used for whatever reason
in producing objects later fed to IRIX's MIPSpro linker, then things
would break.

Modify ELF linker code accordingly then, using the same hook.  Adjust
the `ld-elf/64ksec-r' test accordingly so that it also accepts a section
symbol with a name.

Also modify the hook itself so that only actual ET_REL objects have
names assigned to local section symbols.  Other kinds of ELF files are
not ever supposed to be relocated with the MIPSpro linker, so we can
afford producing more standard output.

Add suitable GAS, LD and `objcopy' test cases to the relevant testsuites
to keep these tools consistently verified.  This change also fixes:

FAIL: objcopy executable (pr25662)

across MIPS targets using the IRIX compatibility mode.

3f1b17bbf0 MIPS/LD: Set symtab's `sh_info' correctly for IRIX emulations
Correct ELF linker code so as to set the `sh_info' value of the static
symbol table section according to the section symbols vs other symbols
split where required by the selection of the IRIX compatibility mode for
MIPS target.  Add a `elf_backend_elfsym_local_is_section' hook for that
purpose, returning TRUE if it is only STB_LOCAL/STT_SECTION symbols that
are to be considered local for the purpose of this split rather than all
STB_LOCAL symbols.

We do it already in generic ELF code, and have done it since 1993, with
the `elf_backend_sym_is_global' hook, affecting GAS and `objcopy', so
these tools produce correct ELF output in the IRIX compatibility mode,
however if such output is fed as input to `ld -r', then the linker's
output is no longer valid for that mode.  The relevant changes to
generic ELF code are:

peculiarities).

The `elf_backend_sym_is_global' hook however operates on BFD rather than
ELF symbols, making it unsuitable for the ELF linker as the linker does
not convert any symbol tables processed into the BFD format.  Converting
the hook to operate on ELF symbols would in principle be possible, but
it would still require a considerable rewrite of `bfd_elf_final_link' to
adapt to the interface.

Therefore, especially given that no new use for the IRIX compatibility
mode is expected, minimize changes made to the ELF linker code and just
add an entirely new hook, and wire it in the o32 and n32 MIPS backends
accordingly; the n64 backend never uses the IRIX compatibility mode.

Since we have no coverage here at all add suitable GAS, LD and `objcopy'
test cases to the relevant testsuites to keep these tools consistently
verified.

All ELF backends with shared library support need to add dynamic tags.
Add dt_pltgot_required and dt_jmprel_required to elf_link_hash_table to
indicate that DT_PLTGOT and DT_JMPREL are required dynamic tags.

c4b126b87a ELF: Don't check relocations in non-loaded, non-alloced sections
Don't do anything special with non-loaded, non-alloced sections.
In particular, any relocs in such sections should not affect GOT
and PLT reference counting (ie. we don't allow them to create GOT
or PLT entries), there's no possibility or desire to optimize TLS
relocs, and there's not much point in propagating relocs to shared
libs that the dynamic linker won't relocate.

Since check_relocs is no longer called on non-loaded, non-alloced
sections, remove SEC_ALLOC check.  Resolve relocation in debug section
against symbol defined in shared library to 0.

6f6fd151cb elf: Strip zero-sized dynamic sections
ELF size_dynamic_sections is called by the ELF backend linker after all
the linker input files have been seen but before the section sizes have
been set.  After the sections sizes have been set, target-specific,
global optimizations may make some dynamic sections zero-sized if they
are no longer needed.

Add ELF strip_zero_sized_dynamic_sections so that ELF backend linker can
strip zero-sized dynamic sections after the sections sizes have been set.

e310298cf3 PR25593, --as-needed breaks DT_NEEDED order with linker plugin
This patch delays setting up DT_NEEDED dynamic tags until all object
files and libraries have been opened and their symbols processed,
rather than adding the tags while processing symbols.  Tags are
ordered according to the position of the associated library on the
command line and linker scripts.  It is still possible with
--as-needed libs that are mentioned more than once for tags to be
ordered according to which mention was needed.  For example with
"--as-needed a.so b.so c.so b.so" when b.so is not needed by a.so or
any other prior object file but is needed by c.so, the order of tags
will be "A C B".

986f078366 bfd_size_type to size_t
bfd_size_type was invented a long time ago in the K&R days.  Many
places in binutils ought to be using size_t instead (and there are
lots of places that use long or unsigned long that really ought to use
size_t too).  Note that you can't change everything over to size_t: A
32-bit host needs a larger type than size_t to support reading and
processing of 64-bit ELF object files.  This patch just tidies some
of the more obvious uses of bfd_size_type that could be size_t.  There
no doubt are more lurking in the source.  Incidentally, practically
all functions used for output of object files can use size_t and don't
need to worry about overflow of size expressions.  If you have
something like
  symcount * sizeof (void *)
when symcount is counting symbols already in memory then you know that
this expression can't overflow since the size of a symbol in memory is
larger by far than that of a pointer.

In cases where a relocatable object file has a common symbol, no other
file has a definition, and there is a matching common symbol found in
a shared library then ld will output a definition using the largest of
size and alignment for the commons.  This patch fixes a bug in ld that
ignored common symbols when assigning versions, resulting in such
symbols being given VER_NDX_LOCAL versions.

bb2942085c Pass section when available to bfd_octets_per_byte
and other tidies.  I think it's better to default to passing the
section to bfd_octets_per_byte, even in cases where we know it won't
make a difference.

A number of the coff reloc functions used bfd_octets_per_byte wrongly,
not factoring it into the offset into the data buffer.  As it happens,
the targets using those files always had bfd_octets_per_byte equal to
one, so there wasn't any detectable wrong behaviour.  However, it is
wrong in the source and might cause trouble for anyone creating a new
target.  Besides fixing that, the patch also defines OCTETS_PER_BYTE
as one in target files where that is appropriate.

3a3f4bf76a qsort: elf_link_add_object_symbols weak aliases
This particular sort almost certainly does not need to be stable for
the ELF linker to work correctly.  However it is conceivable that an
unstable sort could affect linker output, and thus different output be
seen with differing qsort implementations.  The argument goes like
this:  Given more than one strong alias symbol of equal section, value,
and size, the aliases will compare equal by elf_sort_symbol and thus
which one is chosen as the "real" symbol to be made dynamic depends on
qsort.  Why would anyone define two symbols at the same address?
Well, sometimes the fact that there are more than one strong alias
symbol is due to linker script symbols like __bss_start being made
dynamic.  This will match the first symbol defined in .bss if it
doesn't have correct size, and forgetting to properly set size and
type of symbols isn't as rare as it should be.

This patch adds some more heuristics to elf_sort_symbol.

	* elflink.c (elf_sort_symbol): Sort on type and name as well.
	(elf_link_add_object_symbols): Style fix.

48db329734 qsort: elf_sort_sections use of target_index
elf_sort_sections tried to ensure a stable qsort by using target_index
as the final comparison, but target_index hasn't been set by anything
at the time elf_sort_sections was run.  This patch arrange to have
target_index set.

	for sections about to be sorted.
	(assign_file_positions_for_load_sections): Likewise.
	(elf_sort_sections): Don't bother optimising both TOEND case.

8c1c5e5de4 qsort: SHF_LINK_ORDER section sort
The linker SHF_LINK_ORDER section sorting had a number of defects.
1) The ordering was by VMA, which won't work with overlays.  LMA is
   better.
2) Zero size sections can result in two sections at the same LMA/VMA.
   When only one of the two sections at the same LMA is zero size,
   that one must be first.
3) Warnings given by elf_get_linked_section_vma won't ever be emitted
   since elf_object_p warns and excludes objects with zero sh_link on
   a SHF_LINK_ORDER section.
4) Section offset was adjusted down rather than up by section
   alignment, possibly creating overlapping sections.
5) Finding the linked section did so the hard way, rather than simply
   using elf_linked_to_section.

	* elflink.c (elf_get_linked_section_vma): Delete.
	(compare_link_order): Use elf_linked_to_section and sort by lma,
	size, and id.
	(elf_fixup_link_order): Use size_t variables where appropriate.
	Make use of elf_linked_to_section.  Formatting.  Properly align
	sections.

dcea6a95d7 qsort issues
qsort isn't guaranteed to be a stable sort, that is, elements
comparing equal according to the comparison function may be reordered
relative to their original ordering.  Of course sometimes you may not
care, but even in those cases it is good to force some ordering
(ie. not have the comparison function return 0) so that linker output
is reproducible over different libc qsort implementations.

One way to make qsort stable (which the glibc manual incorrectly says
is the only way) is to augment the elements being sorted with a
monotonic counter of some kind, and use that counter as the final
arbiter of ordering in the comparison function.

Another way is to set up an array of pointers into the array of
elements, first pointer to first element, second pointer to second
element and so so, and sort the pointer array rather than the element
array.  Final arbiter in the comparison function then is the pointer
difference.  This works well with, for example, the symbol pointers
returned by _bfd_elf_canonicalize_symtab which point into a symbol
array.

This patch fixes a few places where sorting by symbol pointers is
appropriate, and adds comments where qsort stability is a non-issue.

847d518374 Bogus "final link failed" messages
This patch is a result of noticing messages like the following:
tmpdir/tls32.o: in function `_start':
(.text+0x1c): unresolvable R_PPC_REL24 relocation against symbol `__tls_get_addr_opt'
./ld-new: final link failed: symbol needs debug section which does not exist

The "needs debug section" comes from attempting to use debug info to
find source line information to print the first error message.  That
error isn't of interest to the user, and any previous bfd_error value
which might be of interest is overwritten.  So save and restore
bfd_error around the fancy error reporting code.

That still doesn't leave us with a clean bfd_error.  Now we get
./ld-new: final link failed: nonrepresentable section on output
An unresolvable relocation surely doesn't mean there is some bfd
section that ld doesn't know how to output!  Digging into that showed
a _bfd_elf_section_from_bfd_section failure attempting to find an elf
section correcsponding to ".interp".  So don't go looking for elf
sections on linker created bfd sections.

And then fix the linker testsuite which expected the bogus message..

1ff6de0312 bfd, ld: add CTF section linking
This is quite complicated because the CTF section's contents depend on
the final contents of the symtab and strtab, because it has two sections
whose contents are shuffled to be in 1:1 correspondence with the symtab,
and an internal strtab that gets deduplicated against the ELF strtab
(with offsets adjusted to point into the ELF strtab instead).  It is
also compressed if large enough, so its size depends on its contents!

So we cannot construct it as early as most sections: we cannot even
*begin* construction until after the symtab and strtab are finalized.
Thankfully there is already one section treated similarly: compressed
debugging sections: the only differences are that compressed debugging
sections have extra handling to deal with their changing name if
compressed (CTF sections are always called ".ctf" for now, though we
have reserved ".ctf.*" against future use), and that compressed
debugging sections have previously-uncompressed content which has to be
stashed away for later compression, while CTF sections have no content
at all until we generate it (very late).

BFD also cannot do the link itself: libctf knows how to do it, and BFD
cannot call libctf directly because libctf already depends on bfd for
file I/O.  So we have to use a pair of callbacks, one, examine_strtab,
which allows a caller to examine the symtab and strtab after
finalization (called from elf_link_swap_symbols_out(), right before the
symtabs are written, and after the strtab has been finalized), and one
which actually does the emission (called emit_ctf simply because it is
grouped with a bunch of section-specific late-emission function calls at
the bottom of bfd_elf_final_link, and a section-specific name seems best
for that).  emit_ctf is actually called *twice*: once from lang_process
if the emulation suggests that this bfd target does not examine the
symtab or strtab, and once via a bfd callback if it does.  (This means
that non-ELF targets still get CTF emitted, even though the late CTF
emission stage is never called for them).

v2: merged with non-ELF support patch: slight commit message
    adjustments.
v3: do not spend time merging CTF, or crash, if the CTF section is
    explicitly discarded.  Do not try to merge or compress CTF unless
    linking.
v4: add CTF_COMPRESSION_THRESHOLD.  Annul the freed input ctf_file_t's
    after writeout: set SEC_IN_MEMORY on the output contents so a future
    bfd enhancement knows it could free it.  Add SEC_LINKER_CREATED |
    SEC_KEEP to avoid having to add .ctf to the linker script.  Drop
    now-unnecessary ldlang.h-level elf-bfd.h include and hackery around
    it.  Adapt to elf32.em->elf.em and elf-generic.em->ldelf*.c
