dda83cd783 gdb, gdbserver, gdbsupport: fix leading space vs tabs issues
Many spots incorrectly use only spaces for indentation (for example,
there are a lot of spots in ada-lang.c). I've always found it awkward
when I needed to edit one of these spots: do I keep the original wrong
indentation, or do I fix it? What if the lines around it are also
wrong, do I fix them too? I probably don't want to fix them in the same
patch, to avoid adding noise to my patch.

So I propose to fix as much as possible once and for all (hopefully).

One typical counter argument for this is that it makes code archeology
more difficult, because git-blame will show this commit as the last
change for these lines. My counter counter argument is: when
git-blaming, you often need to do "blame the file at the parent commit"
anyway, to go past some other refactor that touched the line you are
interested in, but is not the change you are looking for. So you
already need a somewhat efficient way to do this.

Using some interactive tool, rather than plain git-blame, makes this
trivial. For example, I use "tig blame <file>", where going back past
the commit that changed the currently selected line is one keystroke.
It looks like Magit in Emacs does it too (though I've never used it).
Web viewers of Github and Gitlab do it too. My point is that it won't
really make archeology more difficult.

The other typical counter argument is that it will cause conflicts with
existing patches. That's true... but it's a one time cost, and those
are not conflicts that are difficult to resolve. I have also tried "git
rebase --ignore-whitespace", it seems to work well. Although that will
re-introduce the faulty indentation, so one needs to take care of fixing
the indentation in the patch after that (which is easy).

c9debfb97e gdb: Convert language la_get_symbol_name_matcher field to a method
This commit changes the language_data::la_get_symbol_name_matcher
function pointer member variable into a member function of
language_defn.

There should be no user visible changes after this commit.

Before this commit access to the la_get_symbol_name_matcher function
pointer was through the get_symbol_name_matcher function, which looked
something like this (is pseudo-code):

  <return-type>
  get_symbol_name_matcher (language_defn *lang, <other args>)
  {
    if (current_language == ada)
      current_language->la_get_symbol_name_matcher (<other args>);
    else
      lang->la_get_symbol_name_matcher (<other args>);
  }

In this commit I moved the get_symbol_name_matcher as a non-virtual
function in the language_defn base class, I then add a new virtual
method that is only used from within get_symbol_name_matcher, this can
then be overridden by specific languages as needed. So we now have:

  class language_defn
  {
    <return-type> get_symbol_name_matcher (<args>)
    {
      if (current_language == ada)

This changes get_objfile_arch to be a new inline method,

To my surprise, this function came up while profiling DWARF psymbol

e0802d5996 Avoid copying in lookup_name_info
lookup_name_info always copies the name that is passed in. However,
normally a copy is not needed. This patch changes this class to avoid
copying. This required changing the "name" method to return something
else; I chose a gdb::string_view, to avoid excessive calls to strlen
in the code using the lookup_name_info. However, as this class does
not allow an arbitrary string_view, I've also added a c_str method
that guarantees a \0-terminated result -- a pedantic difference but
one that respects the string_view contract, IMO.

733d0a6795 gdb/tui: asm window handles invalid memory and scrolls better
This started as a patch to enable the asm window to handle attempts to
disassemble invalid memory, but it ended up expanding into a
significant rewrite of how the asm window handles scrolling. These
two things ended up being tied together as it was impossible to
correctly test scrolling into invalid memory when the asm window would
randomly behave weirdly while scrolling.

Things that should work nicely now; scrolling to the bottom or top of
the listing with PageUp, PageDown, Up Arrow, Down Arrow and we should
be able to scroll past small areas of memory that don't have symbols
associated with them. It should also be possible to scroll to the
start of a section even if there's no symbol at the start of the
section.

Adding tests for this scrolling was a little bit of a problem. First
I would have liked to add tests for PageUp / PageDown, but the tuiterm
library we use doesn't support these commands right now due to only
emulating a basic ascii terminal. Changing this to emulate a more
complex terminal would require adding support for more escape sequence
control codes, so I've not tried to tackle that in this patch.

Next, I would have liked to test scrolling to the start or end of the
assembler listing and then trying to scroll even more, however, this
is a problem because in a well behaving GDB a scroll at the start/end
has no effect. What we need to do is:

  - Move to start of assembler listing,
  - Send scroll up command,
  - Wait for all curses output,
  - Ensure the assembler listing is unchanged, we're still at the
    start of the listing.

The problem is that there is no curses output, so how long do we wait
at step 3? The same problem exists for scrolling to the bottom of the
assembler listing. However, when scrolling down you can at least see
the end coming, so I added a test for this case, however, this feels
like an area of code that is massively under tested.

c1b5c1ebc9 Use an accessor function for general_symbol_info::language
Also renames the member variable to m_language to make code easier to read
when more functions become member functions.

I was originally hoping to eventually make m_language private (after a few
more patches), but unfortunately then it no longer counts as a POD type,
which means gdbsupport/poison.h won't let us use memset to initialize
this type, which psymtabs rely on to clear padding bytes so that bcache
can work properly.

f1d293cc58 Revert "Turn off threaded minsym demangling by default"
This reverts commit 62e77f56f0.

62e77f56f0 Turn off threaded minsym demangling by default
Per discussion on gdb-patches with Joel, this patch turns off multihreaded
symbol loading by default. It can be turned on using:
  maint set worker-threads unlimited

To keep the behavior as close as possible to the old code, it still
calls symbol_set_names in the old place if n_worker_threads is 0.

d55c9a6847 Demangle minsyms in parallel
This patch introduces a simple parallel for_each and changes the
minimal symbol reader to use it when computing the demangled name for

5a79c10755 Defer minimal symbol name-setting
Currently the demangled name of a minimal symbol is set when creating
the symbol. However, there is no intrinsic need to do this. This
patch instead arranges for the demangling to be done just before the
minsym hash tables are filled. This will be useful in a later patch.

31edb80295 Change some arguments to gdb::string_view instead of name+len
Just some code cleanup. This change has a few benefits:
- Shorter argument list in the functions
- If the caller needs to calculate the string, they no longer
  need to explicitly call strlen
- It is easy to pass std::string to this (done in one place
  currently)

This also updates a couple of places that were passing 0/1 to
a bool parameter.

4b610737f0 Handle copy relocations
In ELF, if a data symbol is defined in a shared library and used by
the main program, it will be subject to a "copy relocation". In this
scenario, the main program has a copy of the symbol in question, and a
relocation that tells ld.so to copy the data from the shared library.
Then the symbol in the main program is used to satisfy all references.

This patch changes gdb to handle this scenario. Data symbols coming
from ELF shared libraries get a special flag that indicates that the
symbol's address may be subject to copy relocation.

I looked briefly into handling copy relocations by looking at the
actual relocations in the main program, but this seemed difficult to
do with BFD.

Note that no caching is done here. Perhaps this could be changed if
need be; I wanted to avoid possible problems with either objfile
lifetimes and changes, or conflicts with the long-term (vapor-ware)
objfile splitting project.

6fb08628e0 Use std::sort instead of qsort in minsyms.c
This has better typesafety and is also marginally faster (either
due to inlining or because it avoids indirection through a
function pointer).

Note that in this change:
- return 1; /* fn1 has no name, so it is "less". */
+ return true; /* fn1 has no name, so it is "less". */
       else if (name1) /* fn2 has no name, so it is "less". */
-       return -1;
+       return false;
I am fairly sure the old code was wrong (ie. code didn't match the
comment and the comment seemed correct), so I fixed it.

268a13a5a3 Rename common to gdbsupport
This is the next patch in the ongoing series to move gdbsever to the
top level.

This patch just renames the "common" directory. The idea is to do
this move in two parts: first rename the directory (this patch), then
move the directory to the top. This approach makes the patches a bit
more tractable.

I chose the name "gdbsupport" for the directory. However, as this
patch was largely written by sed, we could pick a new name without too
much difficulty.

        Allocate minimal symbols with malloc

Before this commit, the array of 'struct minimal_symbol'
contained a last element that was a "null symbol". The comment in
minimal_symbol_reader::install was:
      /* We also terminate the minimal symbol table with a "null symbol",
         which is *not* included in the size of the table. This makes it
         easier to find the end of the table when we are handed a pointer
         to some symbol in the middle of it. Zero out the fields in the
         "null symbol" allocated at the end of the array. Note that the
         symbol count does *not* include this null symbol, which is why it
         is indexed by mcount and not mcount-1. */

      memset (&msymbols[mcount], 0, sizeof (struct minimal_symbol));

However, minimal_symbol_upper_bound was still based on the assumption
that the array of minsym is terminated by a minsym with a null symbol:
it is looping with:
  for (i = 1; MSYMBOL_LINKAGE_NAME (msymbol + i) != NULL; i++)

Replace this NULL comparison by a logic that calculates how
many msymbol are following the msymbols from which we are starting from.

(Re-)tested on debian/amd64, natively and under valgrind.

4bd56d18cc Fix regression caused by minimal symbol changes
The earlier patch to change minimal symbol allocations to use xmalloc
erroneously left a call to obstack_blank in
minimal_symbol_reader::install. Because obstack_blank does not finish
the object allocation on an obstack, this in turn could cause invalid
memory reads in some situations.

This patch fixes the problem by removing the call. Tested on x86-64
Fedora 29; also verified with valgrind.

eefba3da27 Change minimal_symbol inheritance
This changes struct minimal_symbol to inherit from general_symbol_info
and updates various macros to cope.

Because MSYMBOL_SET_LANGUAGE and MSYMBOL_SET_NAMES were only used from
a single spot, this patch removes them in favor of simply inlining
their definitions. I consider this to be somewhat cleaner, not least
because the "phony polymorphism" provided by such macros is not useful
in practice.

042d75e42c Allocate minimal symbols with malloc
Currently, minimal symbols are allocated on the per-BFD obstack.
However, it is also possible for multiple symbol readers to create
minimal symbols for a given objfile. In this case, the minimal
symbols will be reallocated on the obstack, leading to some waste of
storage.

This is a memory leak, but I think it won't be caught by tools like
valgrind, because valgrind doesn't know about obstacks.

This patch fixes the problem by using malloc to allocate the storage
for minimal symbols.

5325b9bf1e Remove ALL_MSYMBOLS and ALL_OBJFILE_MSYMBOLS
This removes the ALL_MSYMBOLS and ALL_OBJFILE_MSYMBOLS macros,
replacing their uses with ranged for loops.

In a couple of spots, a new declaration was needed in order to work
around shadowing; these are just temporary and are removed in a
subsequent patch.

42a4f53d2b Update copyright year range in all GDB files.
This commit applies all changes made after running the gdb/copyright.py
script.

Note that one file was flagged by the script, due to an invalid
copyright header
(gdb/unittests/basic_string_view/element_access/char/empty.cc).
As the file was copied from GCC's libstdc++-v3 testsuite, this commit
leaves this file untouched for the time being; a patch to fix the header
was sent to gcc-patches first.

gdb/ChangeLog:

	Update copyright year range in all GDB files.

e08b849efa Add debug output for recorded minsyms
While discussing this issue:

  https://sourceware.org/ml/gdb-patches/2018-12/threads.html#00082

I added a printf gated by "set debug symtab-create" to be able to
quickly see all minimal symbols recorded by GDB. I thought it would be
useful to have it built-in, for the future. Here's how the output
looks:

  Recording minsym:  mst_data                         0x400780    15  _IO_stdin_used
  Recording minsym:  mst_text                         0x400700    13  __libc_csu_init
  Recording minsym:  mst_bss                          0x601058    25  _end

gdb/ChangeLog:

	* minsyms.c (mst_str): New.
	(minimal_symbol_reader::record_full): Add debug output.

6ae5026709 Silence -Wmaybe-uninitialized warning in minsyms.c:lookup_minimal_symbol_by_pc_section
Compiling with GCC 8.1 shows this warning:

  gdb/minsyms.c: In function 'bound_minimal_symbol lookup_minimal_symbol_by_pc_section(CORE_ADDR, obj_section*, lookup_msym_prefer)':
  gdb/minsyms.c:825:40: warning: 'want_type' may be used uninitialized in this function [-Wmaybe-uninitialized]
	   && MSYMBOL_TYPE (&msymbol[hi]) != want_type

That warning is a false positive, because the switch that converts
enum lookup_msym_prefer values to enum enum minimal_symbol_type values
has a case for every lookup_msym_prefer enumerator:

  switch (prefer)
   {
    case lookup_msym_prefer::TEXT:
      want_type = mst_text;
      break;
    case lookup_msym_prefer::TRAMPOLINE:
      want_type = mst_solib_trampoline;
      break;
    case lookup_msym_prefer::GNU_IFUNC:
      want_type = mst_text_gnu_ifunc;
      break;
    }

The problem is that GCC assumes that enum variables may hold values
other than the named enumerators (like e.g., "lookup_msym_prefer
prefer = (lookup_msym_prefer) 10;").

Rework the code a bit, adding a gdb_assert to make it explicit to the
compiler that want_type is initialized in all normal-return paths.

	(lookup_minimal_symbol_by_pc_section): ... here with
	gdb_assert_not_reached added.

8b88a78e63 target_stack -> current_top_target() throughout
The recent C++ification of target_ops replaced references to the old
"current_target" squashed target throughout with references to a
"target_stack" pointer. I had picked the "target_stack" name very
early in the multi-target work, and managed to stick with it, even
though it's a bit of a misnomer, since it isn't really a "target
stack" object, but a pointer into the current top target in the stack.
As I'm splitting more pieces off of the multi-target branch, I've come
to think that it's better to rename it now. A following patch will
introduce a new class to represent a target stack, and "target_stack"
would be _its_ ideal name. (In the branch, the class is called
a_target_stack to work around the clash.)

Thus this commit renames target_stack to current_top_target and
replaces all references throughout. Also, while at it,
current_top_target is made a function instead of a pointer, to make it
possible to change its internal implementation without leaking
implementation details out. In a couple patches, the implementation
of the function will change to refer to a target stack object, and
then further down the multi-target work, it'll change again to find
the right target stack for the current inferior.

64cc34d870 Removing lookup_minimal_symbol_and_objfile
Function lookup_minimal_symbol_and_objfile iterates on all objfiles and
calls lookup_minimal_symbol for each of them, effectively searching in all
objfiles. lookup_bound_minimal_symbol calls lookup_minimal_symbol with NULL,
which also effectively searches all objfiles. AFAIK, they do exactly the same
thing, so we can get rid of one (and lookup_minimal_symbol_and_objfile happens
to be the most inefficient because it ends up n^2 on the number of objfiles).

Tested in both aarch64-linux-gnu and amd64-linux-gnu. No regressions.

e39db4db7c Use XOBNEW/XOBNEWVEC/OBSTACK_ZALLOC when possible
Since XOBNEW/XOBNEWVEC/OBSTACK_ZALLOC are now poisoned to prevent using
them with non-trivially-constructible objects, it is worth using them
over plain obstack_alloc. This patch changes the locations I could find
where we can do that change easily.
