gdb: make add_com_alias accept target as a cmd_list_element
The alias creation functions currently accept a name to specify the target command. They pass this to add_alias_cmd, which needs to lookup the target command by name. Given that: - We don't support creating an alias for a command before that command exists. - We always use add_info_alias just after creating that target command, and therefore have access to the target command's cmd_list_element. ... change add_com_alias to accept the target command as a cmd_list_element (other functions are done in subsequent patches). This ensures we don't create the alias before the target command, because you need to get the cmd_list_element from somewhere when you call the alias creation function. And it avoids an unecessary command lookup. So it seems better to me in every aspect. gdb/ChangeLog: * command.h (add_com_alias): Accept target as cmd_list_element. Update callers. gdb: generate the prefix name for prefix commands on demand
Previously, the prefixname field of struct cmd_list_element was manually
set for prefix commands. This seems verbose and error prone as it
required every single call to functions adding prefix commands to
specify the prefix name while the same information can be easily
generated.
Historically, this was not possible as the prefix field was null for
many commands, but this was fixed in commit

gdb: startup commands to control Python extension language
Add two new commands to GDB that can be placed into the early initialization to control how Python starts up. The new options are: set python ignore-environment on|off set python dont-write-bytecode auto|on|off show python ignore-environment show python dont-write-bytecode These can be used from GDB's startup file to control how the Python extension language behaves. These options are equivalent to the -E and -B flags to python respectively, their descriptions from the Python man page: -E Ignore environment variables like PYTHONPATH and PYTHONHOME that modify the behavior of the interpreter. -B Don't write .pyc files on import. gdb/ChangeLog: * NEWS: Mention new commands. * python/python.c (python_ignore_environment): New static global. gdb: extension languages finish_initialization to initialize
Now that both Python and Guile are fully initialized from their respective finish_initialization methods, the "finish" in the method name doesn't really make sense; initialization starts _and_ finishes with that method. As such, this commit renames finish_initialization to just initialize. There should be no user visible changes after this commit. gdb/ChangeLog: * extension-priv.h (struct extension_language_ops): Rename 'finish_initialization' to 'initialize'. * extension.c (finish_ext_lang_initialization): Renamed to... (ext_lang_initialization): ...this, update comment, and updated the calls to reflect the change in struct extension_language_ops. * extension.h (finish_ext_lang_initialization): Renamed to... gdb: delay python initialisation until gdbpy_finish_initialization
Delay Python initialisation until gdbpy_finish_initialization. This is mostly about splitting the existing gdbpy_initialize_* functions in two, all the calls to register_objfile_data_with_cleanup, gdbarch_data_register_post_init, etc are moved into new _initialize_* functions, but everything else is left in the gdbpy_initialize_* functions. Then the call to do_start_initialization (in python/python.c) is moved from the _initialize_python function into gdbpy_finish_initialization. There should be no user visible changes after this commit. gdb/ChangeLog: * python/py-arch.c (_initialize_py_arch): New function. (gdbpy_initialize_arch): Move code to _initialize_py_arch. * python/py-block.c (_initialize_py_block): New function. gdb: use make_scoped_restore to restore gdbpy_current_objfile
The current mechanism by which the Python gdb.current_objfile is maintained does not allow for nested auto-load events. It is assumed that once an auto-load script has finished loading then the current objfile should be set back to NULL. In a nested situation, we should be restoring the previous value. We already have an RAII class to handle save/restore type behaviour, so lets just switch to use that. The test is a little contrived, but is simple enough, and triggers the bug. The real use case might involve the auto-load script calling functions (either in the just-loaded object file, or in the main executable), which in turn trigger further auto-loads to occur. gdb/ChangeLog: * python/python.c (gdbpy_source_objfile_script): Use make_scoped_restore to restore gdbpy_current_objfile. (gdbpy_execute_objfile_script): Likewise. gdb/testsuite/ChangeLog: * gdb.python/py-auto-load-chaining-f1.c: New file. * gdb.python/py-auto-load-chaining-f1.o-gdb.py: New file. * gdb.python/py-auto-load-chaining-f2.c: New file. * gdb.python/py-auto-load-chaining-f2.o-gdb.py: New file. * gdb.python/py-auto-load-chaining.c: New file. * gdb.python/py-auto-load-chaining.exp: New file. |

gdb/python: reformat an error string
While working on another patch I noticed an oddly formatted error message in the Python code. When 'set python print-stack message' is in effect then consider this Python script: class TestCommand (gdb.Command): def __init__ (self): gdb.Command.__init__ (self, "test-cmd", gdb.COMMAND_DATA) def invoke(self, args, from_tty): raise RuntimeError ("bad") TestCommand () And this GDB session: (gdb) source path/to/python/script.py (gdb) test-cmd Python Exception <class 'RuntimeError'> bad: Error occurred in Python: bad The line 'Python Exception <class 'RuntimeError'> bad:' doesn't look terrible in this situation, the colon at the end of the first line makes sense given the second line. However, there are places in GDB where there is no second line printed, for example consider this python script: def stop_listener (e): raise RuntimeError ("bad") gdb.events.stop.connect (stop_listener) Then this GDB session: (gdb) file helloworld.exe (gdb) start Temporary breakpoint 1 at 0x40112a: file hello.c, line 6. Starting program: helloworld.exe Temporary breakpoint 1, main () at hello.c:6 6 printf ("Hello World\n"); Python Exception <class 'RuntimeError'> bad: (gdb) si 0x000000000040112f 6 printf ("Hello World\n"); Python Exception <class 'RuntimeError'> bad: In this case there is no auxiliary information displayed after the warning, and the line ending in the colon looks weird to me. A quick survey of the code seems to indicate that it is not uncommon for there to be no auxiliary information line printed, its not just the one case I found above. I propose that the line that currently looks like this: Python Exception <class 'RuntimeError'> bad: Be reformatted like this: Python Exception <class 'RuntimeError'>: bad I think this looks fine then in either situation. The first now looks like this: (gdb) test-cmd Python Exception <class 'RuntimeError'>: bad Error occurred in Python: bad And the second like this: (gdb) si 0x000000000040112f 6 printf ("Hello World\n"); Python Exception <class 'RuntimeError'>: bad There's just two tests that needed updating. Errors are checked for in many more tests, but most of the time the pattern doesn't care about the colon. gdb/ChangeLog: * python/python.c (gdbpy_print_stack): Reformat an error message. gdb/testsuite/ChangeLog: * gdb.python/py-framefilter.exp: Update expected results. * gdb.python/python.exp: Update expected results. |

gdb, gdbserver, gdbsupport: fix leading space vs tabs issues
Many spots incorrectly use only spaces for indentation (for example, there are a lot of spots in ada-lang.c). I've always found it awkward when I needed to edit one of these spots: do I keep the original wrong indentation, or do I fix it? What if the lines around it are also wrong, do I fix them too? I probably don't want to fix them in the same patch, to avoid adding noise to my patch. So I propose to fix as much as possible once and for all (hopefully). One typical counter argument for this is that it makes code archeology more difficult, because git-blame will show this commit as the last change for these lines. My counter counter argument is: when git-blaming, you often need to do "blame the file at the parent commit" anyway, to go past some other refactor that touched the line you are interested in, but is not the change you are looking for. So you already need a somewhat efficient way to do this. Using some interactive tool, rather than plain git-blame, makes this trivial. For example, I use "tig blame <file>", where going back past the commit that changed the currently selected line is one keystroke. It looks like Magit in Emacs does it too (though I've never used it). Web viewers of Github and Gitlab do it too. My point is that it won't really make archeology more difficult. The other typical counter argument is that it will cause conflicts with existing patches. That's true... but it's a one time cost, and those are not conflicts that are difficult to resolve. I have also tried "git rebase --ignore-whitespace", it seems to work well. Although that will re-introduce the faulty indentation, so one needs to take care of fixing the indentation in the patch after that (which is easy). gdb/ChangeLog: * aarch64-linux-tdep.c: Fix gdb/python: Add gdb.Architecture.registers method
This commit adds a new method gdb.Architecture.registers that returns an object of the new type gdb.RegisterDescriptorIterator. This iterator returns objects of the new type gdb.RegisterDescriptor. A RegisterDescriptor is not a way to read the value of a register, this is already covered by Frame.read_register, a RegisterDescriptor is simply a way to discover from Python, which registers are available for a given architecture. I did consider just returning a string, the name of each register, instead of a RegisterDescriptor, however, I'm aware that it we don't want to break the existing Python API in any way, so if I return just a string now, but in the future we want more information about a register then we would have to add a second API to get that information. By going straight to a descriptor object now, it is easy to add additional properties in the future should we wish to. Right now the only property of a register that a user can access is the name of the register. In future we might want to be able to ask the register about is register groups, or its type. gdb/ChangeLog: * Makefile.in (SUBDIR_PYTHON_SRCS): Add py-registers.c * python/py-arch.c (archpy_registers): New function. Fix Python3.9 related runtime problems
Python3.9b1 is now available on Rawhide. GDB w/ Python 3.9 support can be built using the configure switch -with-python=/usr/bin/python3.9. Attempting to run gdb/Python3.9 segfaults on startup: #0 0x00007ffff7b0582c in PyEval_ReleaseLock () from /lib64/libpython3.9.so.1.0 #1 0x000000000069ccbf in do_start_initialization () at worktree-test1/gdb/python/python.c:1789 #2 _initialize_python () at worktree-test1/gdb/python/python.c:1877 #3 0x00000000007afb0a in initialize_all_files () at init.c:237 ... Consulting the the documentation... https://docs.python.org/3/c-api/init.html ...we find that PyEval_ReleaseLock() has been deprecated since version 3.2. It recommends using PyEval_SaveThread or PyEval_ReleaseThread() instead. In do_start_initialization, in gdb/python/python.c, we can replace the calls to PyThreadState_Swap() and PyEval_ReleaseLock() with a single call to PyEval_SaveThread. (Thanks to Keith Seitz for working this out.) With that in place, GDB gets a little bit further. It still dies on startup, but the backtrace is different: #0 0x00007ffff7b04306 in PyOS_InterruptOccurred () from /lib64/libpython3.9.so.1.0 #1 0x0000000000576e86 in check_quit_flag () at worktree-test1/gdb/extension.c:776 #2 0x0000000000576f8a in set_active_ext_lang (now_active=now_active@entry=0x983c00 <extension_language_python>) at worktree-test1/gdb/extension.c:705 #3 0x000000000069d399 in gdbpy_enter::gdbpy_enter (this=0x7fffffffd2d0, gdbarch=0x0, language=0x0) at worktree-test1/gdb/python/python.c:211 #4 0x0000000000686e00 in python_new_inferior (inf=0xddeb10) at worktree-test1/gdb/python/py-inferior.c:251 #5 0x00000000005d9fb9 in std::function<void (inferior*)>::operator()(inferior*) const (__args#0=<optimized out>, this=0xccad20) at /usr/include/c++/10/bits/std_function.h:617 #6 gdb::observers::observable<inferior*>::notify (args#0=0xddeb10, this=<optimized out>) at worktree-test1/gdb/../gdbsupport/observable.h:106 #7 add_inferior_silent (pid=0) at worktree-test1/gdb/inferior.c:113 #8 0x00000000005dbcb8 in initialize_inferiors () at worktree-test1/gdb/inferior.c:947 ... We checked with some Python Developers and were told that we should acquire the GIL prior to calling any Python C API function. We definitely don't have the GIL for calls of PyOS_InterruptOccurred(). I moved class_gdbpy_gil earlier in the file and use it in gdbpy_check_quit_flag() to acquire (and automatically release) the GIL. With those changes in place, I was able to run to a GDB prompt. But, when trying to quit, it segfaulted again due to due to some other problems with gdbpy_check_quit_flag(): Thread 1 "gdb" received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault. 0x00007ffff7bbab0c in new_threadstate () from /lib64/libpython3.9.so.1.0 (top-gdb) bt 8 #0 0x00007ffff7bbab0c in new_threadstate () from /lib64/libpython3.9.so.1.0 #1 0x00007ffff7afa5ea in PyGILState_Ensure.cold () from /lib64/libpython3.9.so.1.0 #2 0x000000000069b58c in gdbpy_gil::gdbpy_gil (this=<synthetic pointer>) at worktree-test1/gdb/python/python.c:278 #3 gdbpy_check_quit_flag (extlang=<optimized out>) at worktree-test1/gdb/python/python.c:278 #4 0x0000000000576e96 in check_quit_flag () at worktree-test1/gdb/extension.c:776 #5 0x000000000057700c in restore_active_ext_lang (previous=0xe9c050) at worktree-test1/gdb/extension.c:729 #6 0x000000000088913a in do_my_cleanups ( pmy_chain=0xc31870 <final_cleanup_chain>, old_chain=0xae5720 <sentinel_cleanup>) at worktree-test1/gdbsupport/cleanups.cc:131 #7 do_final_cleanups () at worktree-test1/gdbsupport/cleanups.cc:143 In this case, we're trying to call a Python C API function after Py_Finalize() has been called from finalize_python(). I made finalize_python set gdb_python_initialized to false and then cause check_quit_flag() to return early when it's false. With these changes in place, GDB seems to be working again with Python3.9b1. I think it likely that there are other problems lurking. I wouldn't be surprised to find that there are other calls into Python where we don't first make sure that we have the GIL. Further changes may well be needed. I see no regressions testing on Rawhide using a GDB built with the default Python version (3.8.3) versus one built using Python 3.9b1. I've also tested on Fedora 28, 29, 30, 31, and 32 (all x86_64) using the default (though updated) system installed versions of Python on those OSes. This means that I've tested against Python versions 2.7.15, 2.7.17, 2.7.18, 3.7.7, 3.8.2, and 3.8.3. In each case GDB still builds without problem and shows no regressions after applying this patch. gdb/ChangeLog: 2020-MM-DD Kevin Buettner <kevinb@redhat.com> Keith Seitz <keiths@redhat.com> * python/python.c (do_start_initialization): For Python 3.9 and later, call PyEval_SaveThread instead of PyEval_ReleaseLock. (class gdbpy_gil): Move to earlier in file. (finalize_python): Set gdb_python_initialized. (gdbpy_check_quit_flag): Acquire GIL via gdbpy_gil. Return early when not initialized. |

Mark move constructors as "noexcept"
I recently learned that move constructors generally should be marked "noexcept". This ensures that standard containers will move objects when possible, rather than copy them. This patch fixes the cases I could find. Note that implicitly-defined or defaulted move constructors will automatically do what you'd expect; that is, they are noexcept if all the members have noexcept move constructors. While doing this, I noticed a couple of odd cases where the move constructor seemed to assume that the object being constructed could have state requiring destruction. I've fixed these as well. See completion_result and scoped_mmap. gdb/ChangeLog 2020-04-20 Tom Tromey <tromey@adacore.com> * python/python.c (struct gdbpy_event): Mark move constructor as noexcept. * python/py-tui.c (class gdbpy_tui_window_maker): Mark move constructor as noexcept. * completer.h (struct completion_result): Mark move constructor as noexcept. * completer.c (completion_result::completion_result): Use initialization style. Replace most calls to help_list and cmd_show_list
Currently there are many prefix commands that do nothing but call either help_list or cmd_show_list. I happened to notice that one such call, for "set print type", used the wrong command list parameter, causing incorrect output. Rather than fix this bug in isolation, I decided to eliminate this possibility by adding two new ways to add prefix commands, which simply route the call to help_list or cmd_show_list, as appropriate. This makes it impossible for a mismatch to occur. In some cases, a bit of output was removed; however, I don't think this output in general was very useful. It seemed redundant with what's already printed by help_list. A representative example is this hunk, removed from ada-lang.c: - printf_unfiltered (_(\ -"\"set ada\" must be followed by the name of a setting.\n")); This simplified the CLI style set/show commands quite a bit, and allowed the deletion of a macro. This also cleans up some unusual code in windows-tdep.c. Tested on x86-64 Fedora 30. Note that I have no way to build the go32-nat.c change. gdb/ChangeLog 2020-04-17 Tom Tromey <tromey@adacore.com> * auto-load.c (show_auto_load_cmd): Remove. Calling PyEval_InitThreads() now does nothing. The GIL is initialized by Py_Initialize() since Python 3.7. (Contributed by Victor Stinner in bpo-39877.) I chose to disable the call with a #if test using PY_VERSION_HEX. There is precedent for use of PY_VERSION_HEX; it's used in two places in python-internal.h. I noticed that under certain circumstances python-internal.h defines PyEval_InitThreads to be nothing, which accomplishes the same thing. I considered doing something similar for this case, but decided against it because, at some point in the future, the presence of PyEval_InitThreads() without some explanation will be confusing to a reader who won't be able to find PyEval_InitThreads in the current (future for us) Python API. IMO, use of the #if along with an accompanying comment seemed more straightforward. gdb/ChangeLog: * python/python.c (do_start_initialization): Don't call PyEval_InitThreads for Python 3.9 and beyond. gdb: Enable stdin on exception in execute_gdb_command
This is an update of this patch: https://sourceware.org/ml/gdb-patches/2018-09/msg00884.html This patch attempts to address PR gdb/23718 by re-enabling stdin whenever an exception is caught during gdb.execute(). When Python gdb.execute() is called, an exception could occur (e.g. the target disappearing), which is then converted into a Python exception. If stdin was disabled before the exception is caught, it is not re-enabled, because the exception doesn't propagate to the top level of the event loop, whose catch block would otherwise enable it. The result is that when execution of a Python script completes, GDB does not prompt or accept input, and is effectively hung. This change rectifies the issue by re-enabling stdin in the catch block of execute_gdb_command, prior to converting the exception to a Python exception. Since this patch was originally posted I've added a test, and also I converted the code to re-enable stdin from this: SWITCH_THRU_ALL_UIS () { async_enable_stdin (); } to simply this: async_enable_stdin (); My reasoning is that we only need the SWITCH_THRU_ALL_UIS if, at the time the exception is caught, the current_ui might be different than at the time we called async_disable_stdin. Within python's execute_gdb_command I think it should be impossible to switch current_ui, so the SWITCH_THRU_ALL_UIS isn't needed. gdb/ChangeLog: PR gdb/23718 * gdb/python/python.c (execute_gdb_command): Call async_enable_stdin in catch block. gdb/testsuite/ChangeLog: PR gdb/23718 * gdb.server/server-kill-python.exp: New file. Allow use of Pygments to colorize source code
While GNU Source Highlight is good, it's also difficult to build and distribute. For one thing, it needs Boost. For another, it has an unusual configuration and installation setup. Pygments, a Python library, doesn't suffer from these issues, and so I thought it would be a reasonable fallback. This patch implements this idea. GNU Source Highlight is preferred, but if it is unavailable (or fails), the extension languages are tried. This patch also implements support for Pygments. Something similar could be done for Guile, using: https://dthompson.us/projects/guile-syntax-highlight.html However, I don't know enough about Guile internals to make this happen, so I have not done it here. gdb/ChangeLog 2020-01-21 Tom Tromey <tromey@adacore.com> * source-cache.c (source_cache::ensure): Call ext_lang_colorize. * python/python.c (python_extension_ops): Update. gdb: add back declarations for _initialize functions

^~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The only practical way forward I found is to add back the declarations,
which were removed by this commit:

gdb: Introduce global_symbol_searcher
Introduce a new class to wrap up the parameters needed for the function search_symbols, which has now become a member function of this new class. The motivation is that search_symbols already takes a lot of parameters, and a future commit is going to add even more. This commit hopefully makes collecting the state required for a search easier. As part of this conversion the list of filenames in which to search has been converted to a std::vector. There should be no user visible changes after this commit. gdb/ChangeLog: * python/python.c (gdbpy_rbreak): Convert to using global_symbol_searcher. * symtab.c (file_matches): Convert return type to bool, change file list to std::vector, update header comment. (search_symbols): Rename to... (global_symbol_searcher::search): ...this and update now its a member function of global_symbol_searcher. Take account of the changes to file_matches. (symtab_symbol_info): Convert to using global_symbol_searcher. (rbreak_command): Likewise. (search_module_symbols): Likewise. * symtab.h (enum symbol_search): Update comment. PyGILState_Release (m_state); python_gdbarch = m_gdbarch; python_language = m_language; restore_active_ext_lang (m_previous_active); } So, it releases the GIL lock, does 2 assignments and then leads to the following call sequence: restore_active_ext_lang => check_quit_flag => python.c gdbpy_check_quit_flag => PyOS_InterruptOccurred => is_main. is_main code is: static int is_main(_PyRuntimeState *runtime) { unsigned long thread = PyThread_get_thread_ident(); PyInterpreterState *interp = _PyRuntimeState_GetThreadState(runtime)->interp; return (thread == runtime->main_thread && interp == runtime->interpreters.main); } The macros and functions to access the thread state are documented as: /* Variable and macro for in-line access to current thread and interpreter state */ #define _PyRuntimeState_GetThreadState(runtime) \ ((PyThreadState*)_Py_atomic_load_relaxed(&(runtime)->gilstate.tstate_current)) /* Get the current Python thread state. Efficient macro reading directly the 'gilstate.tstate_current' atomic variable. The macro is unsafe: it does not check for error and it can return NULL. The caller must hold the GIL. See also PyThreadState_Get() and PyThreadState_GET(). */ #define _PyThreadState_GET() _PyRuntimeState_GetThreadState(&_PyRuntime) So, we see that GDB releases the GIL and then potentially calls _PyRuntimeState_GetThreadState that needs the GIL. It is not very clear why the problem is only observed when running under Valgrind. Probably caused by the slowdown due to Valgrind and/or to the 'single thread' scheduling by Valgrind. This patch fixes the crashes by releasing the GIT lock later. 2019-11-26 Philippe Waroquiers <philippe.waroquiers@skynet.be> * python/python.c (gdbpy_enter::~gdbpy_enter): Release GIL after restore_active_ext_lang, as GIL is needed for (indirectly) called PyOS_InterruptOccurred. |

gdb/python: Introduce gdb.lookup_static_symbols
If gdb.lookup_static_symbol is going to return a single symbol then it makes sense (I think) for it to return a context sensitive choice of symbol, that is the global static symbol that would be visible to the program at that point. However, if the user of the python API wants to instead get a consistent set of global static symbols, no matter where they stop, then they have to instead consider all global static symbols with a given name - there could be many. That is what this new API function offers, it returns a list (possibly empty) of all global static symbols matching a given name (and optionally a given symbol domain). gdb/ChangeLog: * python/py-symbol.c (gdbpy_lookup_static_symbols): New function. * python/python-internal.h (gdbpy_lookup_static_symbols): Declare new function. * python/python.c (python_GdbMethods): Add gdb.lookup_static_symbols method. * NEWS: Mention gdb.lookup_static_symbols. gdb/testsuite/ChangeLog: * gdb.python/py-symbol.exp: Add test for gdb.lookup_static_symbols. gdb/doc/ChangeLog: * python.texi (Symbols In Python): Add documentation for gdb.lookup_static_symbols. Make relocate_{path,gdb_directory} return std::string
This simplifies memory management. Fix leak detected in python.c initialization code.
Valgrind reports the below leak. Make the variable progname_copy static, so that Valgrind continues to find a pointer to the memory given to Python. Note that the comment in do_start_initialization and the Python documentation indicates that the progname given to Py_SetProgramName cannot be freed. However, in Python 3.7.4, Py_SetProgramName does: void Py_SetProgramName(const wchar_t *program_name) { ... PyMem_RawFree(_Py_path_config.program_name); _Py_path_config.program_name = _PyMem_RawWcsdup(program_name); So, it looks like 3.7.4 Python duplicates its argument, which explains the leak found by Valgrind. It looks better to respect the doc and not have GDB freeing the string given to Py_SetProgramName, and avoid the leak error by declaring the progname_copy static. This will work with Python versions that really use this string without duplicating it, and avoids a leak report for Python version that duplicates it. ==4023== 200 bytes in 1 blocks are definitely lost in loss record 4,545 of 7,116^M ==4023== at 0x4C29F33: malloc (vg_replace_malloc.c:307)^M ==4023== by 0x446D27: xmalloc (alloc.c:60)^M ==4023== by 0x657C77: do_start_initialization (python.c:1610)^M ==4023== by 0x657C77: _initialize_python() (python.c:1823)^M ==4023== by 0x75FE24: initialize_all_files() (init.c:231)^M ==4023== by 0x708A94: gdb_init(char*) (top.c:2242)^M ==4023== by 0x5E7460: captured_main_1 (main.c:857)^M ==4023== by 0x5E7460: captured_main (main.c:1161)^M ==4023== by 0x5E7460: gdb_main(captured_main_args*) (main.c:1186)^M ==4023== by 0x4122D4: main (gdb.c:32)^M gdb/ChangeLog 2019-09-09 Philippe Waroquiers <philippe.waroquiers@skynet.be> * python/python.c (do_start_initialization): Make progname_copy static, to avoid a leak report. |

gdb: Add new -n flag to some info commands
The 'info variables', its alias 'whereis', and 'info functions' all include non-debug symbols in the output by default. The list of non-debug symbols can sometimes be quite long, resulting in the debug symbol based results being scrolled off the screen. This commit adds a '-n' flag to all of the commands listed above that excludes the non-debug symbols from the results, leaving just the debug symbol based results. gdb/ChangeLog: * cli/cli-utils.c (info_print_options_defs): Delete. Make GDB compile with Python 3 on MinGW
PyFile_FromString and PyFile_AsFile have been removed in Python 3. There is no obvious replacement that works here, and we can't just pass our FILE* to a DLL in Windows because it may use a different C runtime. So we just call a Python function which reads and executes file contents. Care must be taken to execute it in the context of __main__. Tested by inverting the ifdef and running the testsuite on Debian Linux (even without the patch, I failed at running the testsuite on Windows). I did test with both Python 2 and 3. gdb/ChangeLog: 2019-08-22 Christian Biesinger <cbiesinger@google.com> * python/lib/gdb/__init__.py (_execute_file): New function. * python/python.c (python_run_simple_file): Call gdb._execute_file on Windows. |

Rename common to gdbsupport
This is the next patch in the ongoing series to move gdbsever to the top level. This patch just renames the "common" directory. The idea is to do this move in two parts: first rename the directory (this patch), then move the directory to the top. This approach makes the patches a bit more tractable. I chose the name "gdbsupport" for the directory. However, as this patch was largely written by sed, we could pick a new name without too much difficulty. Fix crash when using PYTHONMALLOC=debug (PR python/24742)
This bug was originally reported against Fedora GDB: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1723564 The problem is that GDB will crash in the following scenario: - PYTHONMALLOC=debug or PYTHONDEVMODE=1 is set. - The Python debuginfo is installed. - GDB is used to debug Python. The crash looks like this: $ PYTHONMALLOC=debug gdb -args python3 -c pass GNU gdb (GDB) Fedora 8.3-3.fc30 Reading symbols from python3... Reading symbols from /usr/lib/debug/usr/bin/python3.7m-3.7.3-3.fc30.x86_64.debug... (gdb) run Starting program: /usr/bin/python3 -c pass Missing separate debuginfos, use: dnf debuginfo-install glibc-2.29-9.fc30.x86_64 Debug memory block at address p=0x5603977bf330: API '' 8098648152243306496 bytes originally requested The 7 pad bytes at p-7 are not all FORBIDDENBYTE (0xfb): at p-7: 0x03 *** OUCH at p-6: 0x00 *** OUCH at p-5: 0x00 *** OUCH at p-4: 0x00 *** OUCH at p-3: 0x00 *** OUCH at p-2: 0x00 *** OUCH at p-1: 0x00 *** OUCH Because memory is corrupted at the start, the count of bytes requested may be bogus, and checking the trailing pad bytes may segfault. The 8 pad bytes at tail=0x706483999ad1f330 are Segmentation fault (core dumped) It's hard to determine what happens, but after doing some investigation and talking to Victor Stinner I found that GDB should not use the Python memory allocation functions before the Python interpreter is initialized (which makes sense). However, we do just that on python/python.c:do_start_initialization: ... progsize = strlen (progname.get ()); progname_copy = (wchar_t *) PyMem_Malloc ((progsize + 1) * sizeof (wchar_t)); ... /* Note that Py_SetProgramName expects the string it is passed to remain alive for the duration of the program's execution, so it is not freed after this call. */ Py_SetProgramName (progname_copy); ... Py_Initialize (); PyEval_InitThreads (); Upon reading the Python 3 C API documentation, I found (https://docs.python.org/3.5/c-api/memory.html): To avoid memory corruption, extension writers should never try to operate on Python objects with the functions exported by the C library: malloc(), calloc(), realloc() and free(). This will result in mixed calls between the C allocator and the Python memory manager with fatal consequences, because they implement different algorithms and operate on different heaps. However, one may safely allocate and release memory blocks with the C library allocator for individual purposes[...] And Py_SetProgramName seems like a very simple call that doesn't need a Python-allocated memory to work on. So I'm proposing this patch, which simply replaces PyMem_Malloc by xmalloc. Testing this is more complicated. First, the crash is completely non-deterministic; I was able to reproduce it 10 times in a row, and then I wasn't able to reproduce it anymore. I found that if you completely remove your build directory and rebuild GDB from scratch, you can reproduce it again confidently. And with my patch, I confirmed that the bug doesn't manifest even in this situation. No regressions found. OK to apply? gdb/ChangeLog: 2019-06-28 Sergio Durigan Junior <sergiodj@redhat.com> PR python/24742 https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1723564 * python/python.c (do_start_initialization): Use 'xmalloc' instead of 'PyMem_Malloc'. |

Remove trailing newlines from help text
I noticed recently that some command had a trailing newline in its "help" output. So, I temporarily hacked cli-decode.c to print something when a new command was installed that had a trailing newline in its help message, and wrote this patch, which removes all the ones I could find this way. (There could still be a few more in *-nat files.) Remove newlines from warnings
ARI pointed out that a recent patch introduced a call to "warning" with a string that ended in a newline: https://sourceware.org/ml/gdb-patches/2019-06/msg00000.html This is generally forbidden, I believe, because warning adds its own newline. This patch removes all of the trailing newlines I was able to find. I searched for 'warning (.*\\n"' and then fixed the ones where the newline appeared at the end of the string (some had internal newlines). Tested on x86-64 Fedora 29. gdb/ChangeLog 2019-06-10 Tom Tromey <tromey@adacore.com> * m32c-tdep.c (m32c_m16c_address_to_pointer): Don't end warning with a newline. * guile/guile.c (handle_boot_error): Don't end warning with a newline. * cli/cli-cmds.c (exit_status_set_internal_vars): Don't end warning with a newline. * s12z-tdep.c (s12z_skip_prologue): Don't end warning with a newline. Rename gdb exception types
This renames the gdb exception types. The old types were only needed due to the macros in common-exception.h that are now gone. Release the GIL while running a gdb command or expression
PR python/23615 points out that gdb.execute_gdb_command does not release the Python GIL. This means that, while the gdb command is running, other Python threads do not run. This patch solves the problem by introducing a new RAII class that can be used to temporarily release and then re-acquire the GIL, then puts this into the appropriate places in execute_gdb_command and gdbpy_parse_and_eval. This does not include a test case, because after some research I could not find a way to write one that was not racy. gdb/ChangeLog 2019-01-30 Tom Tromey <tom@tromey.com> PR python/23615: * python/python.c (execute_gdb_command): Use gdbpy_allow_threads. (gdbpy_parse_and_eval): Likewise. * python/python-internal.h (gdbpy_allow_threads): New class. |

Do not include py-ref.h in most files
py-ref.h can really only be included from a specific spot in python-internal.h. The other includes are not useful, and cause compilation errors if the includes are ever sorted. So, remove these includes. Arguably, py-ref.h should simply not be a separate header. gdb/ChangeLog 2019-01-22 Tom Tromey <tom@tromey.com> * python/py-arch.c: Do not include py-ref.h. * python/py-bpevent.c: Do not include py-ref.h. * python/py-cmd.c: Do not include py-ref.h. * python/py-continueevent.c: Do not include py-ref.h. * python/py-event.h: Do not include py-ref.h. * python/py-evtregistry.c: Do not include py-ref.h. * python/py-finishbreakpoint.c: Do not include py-ref.h. * python/py-frame.c: Do not include py-ref.h. * python/py-framefilter.c: Do not include py-ref.h. * python/py-function.c: Do not include py-ref.h. * python/py-infevents.c: Do not include py-ref.h. * python/py-linetable.c: Do not include py-ref.h. * python/py-objfile.c: Do not include py-ref.h. * python/py-param.c: Do not include py-ref.h. * python/py-prettyprint.c: Do not include py-ref.h. * python/py-progspace.c: Do not include py-ref.h. * python/py-symbol.c: Do not include py-ref.h. * python/py-symtab.c: Do not include py-ref.h. * python/py-type.c: Do not include py-ref.h. * python/py-unwind.c: Do not include py-ref.h. * python/py-utils.c: Do not include py-ref.h. * python/py-value.c: Do not include py-ref.h. * python/py-varobj.c: Do not include py-ref.h. * python/py-xmethods.c: Do not include py-ref.h. * python/python.c: Do not include py-ref.h. * varobj.c: Do not include py-ref.h. |
