13d03262f2 gdb: move struct ui and related things to ui.{c,h} 
I'd like to move some things so they become methods on struct ui.  But
first, I think that struct ui and the related things are big enough to
deserve their own file, instead of being scattered through top.{c,h} and
event-top.c.

213516ef31 Update copyright year range in header of all files managed by GDB 
This commit is the result of running the gdb/copyright.py script,
which automated the update of the copyright year range for all
source files managed by the GDB project to be updated to include
year 2023.

The variable has been deprecated because it no longer has any effect.

Fix this by disabling the specific deprecation warning.

Also handle upcoming guile versions > 3.0, in which the variable will be
removed, by limiting the usage of the variable to guile versions <= 3.0.

This does not break anything.  The variable was merely used to address a
problem present in guile versions <= v3.0.5.

Note that we don't limit the usage of the variable to guile versions <= 3.0.5,
because we want to support f.i. building against 3.0.6 and then using a shared
lib with 3.0.5.

Tested on x86_64-linux.

e4ae302562 gdb: add extension language print_insn hook 
This commit is setup for the next commit.

In the next commit I will add a Python API to intercept the print_insn
calls within GDB, each print_insn call is responsible for
disassembling, and printing one instruction.  After the next commit it
will be possible for a user to write Python code that either wraps
around the existing disassembler, or even, in extreme situations,
entirely replaces the existing disassembler.

This commit does not add any new Python API.

What this commit does is put the extension language framework in place
for a print_insn hook.  There's a new callback added to 'struct
extension_language_ops', which is then filled in with nullptr for Python
and Guile.

Finally, in the disassembler, the code is restructured so that the new
extension language function ext_lang_print_insn is called before we
delegate to gdbarch_print_insn.

After this, the next commit can focus entirely on providing a Python
implementation of the new print_insn callback.

There should be no user visible change after this commit.

6cb06a8cda Unify gdb printf functions 
Now that filtered and unfiltered output can be treated identically, we
can unify the printf family of functions.  This is done under the name
"gdb_printf".  Most of this patch was written by script.

f54bdb6d27 gdb: add add_setshow_prefix_cmd 
There's a common pattern to call add_basic_prefix_cmd and
add_show_prefix_cmd to add matching set and show commands.  Add the
add_setshow_prefix_cmd function to factor that out and use it at a few
places.

84a6adfd4c [gdb] Make execute_command_to_string return string on throw 
The pattern for using execute_command_to_string is:
...
  std::string output;
  output = execute_fn_to_string (fn, term_out);
...

This results in a problem when using it in a try/catch:
...
  try
    {
      output = execute_fn_to_string (fn, term_out)
    }
  catch (const gdb_exception &e)
    {
      /* Use output.  */
    }
...

If an expection was thrown during execute_fn_to_string, then the output
remains unassigned, while it could be worthwhile to known what output was
generated by gdb before the expection was thrown.

Fix this by returning the string using a parameter instead:
...
  execute_fn_to_string (output, fn, term_out)
...

Also add a variant without string parameter, to support places where the
function is used while ignoring the result:
...
  execute_fn_to_string (fn, term_out)
...

Tested on x86_64-linux.

5e84b7eefb gdb: remove add_alias_cmd overload that accepts a string 
Same idea as previous patch, but for add_alias_cmd.  Remove the overload
that accepts the target command as a string (the target command name),
leaving only the one that takes the cmd_list_element.

3947f654ea gdb: make add_com_alias accept target as a cmd_list_element 
The alias creation functions currently accept a name to specify the
target command.  They pass this to add_alias_cmd, which needs to lookup
the target command by name.

Given that:

 - We don't support creating an alias for a command before that command
   exists.
 - We always use add_info_alias just after creating that target command,
   and therefore have access to the target command's cmd_list_element.

... change add_com_alias to accept the target command as a
cmd_list_element (other functions are done in subsequent patches).  This
ensures we don't create the alias before the target command, because you
need to get the cmd_list_element from somewhere when you call the alias
creation function.  And it avoids an unecessary command lookup.  So it
seems better to me in every aspect.

gdb/ChangeLog:

2f822da535 gdb: generate the prefix name for prefix commands on demand 
Previously, the prefixname field of struct cmd_list_element was manually
set for prefix commands.  This seems verbose and error prone as it
required every single call to functions adding prefix commands to
specify the prefix name while the same information can be easily
generated.

Historically, this was not possible as the prefix field was null for
many commands, but this was fixed in commit
3f4d92ebdf by Philippe Waroquiers, so
we can rely on the prefix field being set when generating the prefix
name.

This commit also fixes a use after free in this scenario:
* A command gets created via Python (using the gdb.Command class).
  The prefix name member is dynamically allocated.
* An alias to the new command is created. The alias's prefixname is set
  to point to the prefixname for the original command with a direct
  assignment.
* A new command with the same name as the Python command is created.
* The object for the original Python command gets freed and its
  prefixname gets freed as well.
* The alias is updated to point to the new command, but its prefixname
  is not updated so it keeps pointing to the freed one.

9589edb836 gdb/guile: Have gdbscm_safe_source_script return a unique_ptr 
Change gdbscm_safe_source_script to return a
gdb::unique_xmalloc_ptr<char> instead of a raw char*.  Update the
users of this function.

225bda24db [gdb/guile] Don't allow libguile to change libgmp mem fns 
Since gdb commit 880ae75a2b "gdb delay guile initialization until
gdbscm_finish_initialization" I'm running into:

The problem is that both gdb and libguile try to set the libgmp memory functions,
and since the gdb commit the ones from libguile are effective, which results
in gdb freeing some memory in a way that is not compatible with the way that
memory was actually allocated.

The fact that libguile tries to set the libgmp memory functions is a bug which
should be fixed starting version v3.0.6.

Meanwhile, work around this in gdb by not allowing libguile to set the libgomp
memory functions.

Tested on x86_64-linux.

041ca48e97 gdb: extension languages finish_initialization to initialize 
Now that both Python and Guile are fully initialized from their
respective finish_initialization methods, the "finish" in the method
name doesn't really make sense; initialization starts _and_ finishes
with that method.

As such, this commit renames finish_initialization to just initialize.

There should be no user visible changes after this commit.

880ae75a2b gdb delay guile initialization until gdbscm_finish_initialization 
Like with the previous commit, this commit delays the initialisation
of the guile extension language until gdbscm_finish_initialization.

This is mostly about splitting the existing gdbscm_initialize_*
functions in two, all the calls to register_objfile_data_with_cleanup,
gdbarch_data_register_post_init, etc are moved into new _initialize_*
functions, but everything else is left in the gdbscm_initialize_*
functions.

Then the call to code previously in _initialize_guile is moved into
gdbscm_finish_initialization.

There should be no user visible changes after this commit.

0743fc83c0 Replace most calls to help_list and cmd_show_list 
Currently there are many prefix commands that do nothing but call
either help_list or cmd_show_list.  I happened to notice that one such
call, for "set print type", used the wrong command list parameter,
causing incorrect output.

Rather than fix this bug in isolation, I decided to eliminate this
possibility by adding two new ways to add prefix commands, which
simply route the call to help_list or cmd_show_list, as appropriate.
This makes it impossible for a mismatch to occur.

In some cases, a bit of output was removed; however, I don't think
this output in general was very useful.  It seemed redundant with
what's already printed by help_list.  A representative example is this
hunk, removed from ada-lang.c:

-  printf_unfiltered (_(\
-"\"set ada\" must be followed by the name of a setting.\n"));

This simplified the CLI style set/show commands quite a bit, and
allowed the deletion of a macro.

This also cleans up some unusual code in windows-tdep.c.

Tested on x86-64 Fedora 30.  Note that I have no way to build the
go32-nat.c change.

6c2659886f gdb: add back declarations for _initialize functions 
I'd like to enable the -Wmissing-declarations warning.  However, it
warns for every _initialize function, for example:

The only practical way forward I found is to add back the declarations,
which were removed by this commit:

I don't think it's a big problem to have the declarations for these

21987b9c06 Add RAII class for blocking gdb signals 
This adds configury support and an RAII class that can be used to
temporarily block signals that are used by gdb.  (This class is not
used in this patch, but it split out for easier review.)

The idea of this patch is that these signals should only be delivered
to the main thread.  So, when creating a background thread, they are
temporarily blocked; the blocked state is inherited by the new thread.

The sigprocmask man page says:

    The use of sigprocmask() is unspecified in a multithreaded
    process; see pthread_sigmask(3).

This patch changes gdb to use pthread_sigmask when appropriate, by
introducing a convenience define.

I've updated gdbserver as well, because I had to touch gdbsupport, and
because the threading patches will make it link against the thread
library.

I chose not to touch the NTO code, because I don't know anything about
that platform and because I cannot test it.

Finally, this modifies an existing spot in the Guile layer to use the
new facility.

f2aec7f6d1 Make relocate_{path,gdb_directory} return std::string 
This simplifies memory management. I've also changed some global variables
to std::string accordingly (which store the result of these functions),
but not all because some are used with add_setshow_optional_filename_cmd
which requires a char*.

268a13a5a3 Rename common to gdbsupport 
This is the next patch in the ongoing series to move gdbsever to the
top level.

This patch just renames the "common" directory.  The idea is to do
this move in two parts: first rename the directory (this patch), then
move the directory to the top.  This approach makes the patches a bit
more tractable.

I chose the name "gdbsupport" for the directory.  However, as this
patch was largely written by sed, we could pick a new name without too
much difficulty.

Tested by the buildbot.

422186a95c Remove newlines from warnings 
ARI pointed out that a recent patch introduced a call to "warning"
with a string that ended in a newline:

    https://sourceware.org/ml/gdb-patches/2019-06/msg00000.html

This is generally forbidden, I believe, because warning adds its own
newline.

This patch removes all of the trailing newlines I was able to find.  I
searched for 'warning (.*\\n"' and then fixed the ones where the
newline appeared at the end of the string (some had internal
newlines).

Tested on x86-64 Fedora 29.

42a4f53d2b Update copyright year range in all GDB files. 
This commit applies all changes made after running the gdb/copyright.py
script.

Note that one file was flagged by the script, due to an invalid
copyright header
(gdb/unittests/basic_string_view/element_access/char/empty.cc).
As the file was copied from GCC's libstdc++-v3 testsuite, this commit
leaves this file untouched for the time being; a patch to fix the header
was sent to gcc-patches first.

8588b35692 python: Make gdb.execute("show commands") work (PR 23669) 
Since commit

  56bcdbea2b ("Let gdb.execute handle multi-line commands")

trying to use a command like gdb.execute("show commands") in Python
fails.  GDB ends up trying to run the "commands" command.

The reason is that GDB gets confused with the special "commands"
command.  In process_next_line, the lookup_cmd_1 function returns the
cmd_list_element representing the "commands" sub-command of "show".
Lower, we check the cmd_list_element to see if it matches various
control commands by name, including the "commands" command.  This is
where we wrongfully conclude that the executed command must be
"commands", when in reality it was "show commands".

The fix proposed in this patch removes the comparisons by name, instead
comparing the cmd_list_element object by pointer with the objects
created at initialization time.

Tested on the buildbot, though on a single builder (Fedora-x86_64-m64).

12973681f5 Use counted_command_line everywhere 
Currently command lines are reference counted using shared_ptr only
when attached to breakpoints.  This patch changes gdb to use
shared_ptr in commands as well.  This allows for the removal of
copy_command_lines.

Note that the change to execute_user_command explicitly makes a new
reference to the command line.  This will be used in a later patch.

This simplifies struct command_line based on the observation that a
given command can have at most two child bodies: an "if" can have both
"then" and "else" parts.  Perhaps the names I've chosen for the
replacements here are not very good -- your input requested.

This patch removes some unused variables, found with -Wunused.  I have
not removed everything reported by -Wunused, because some expressions
such as

  struct type *arg_type = check_typedef (value_type);

in bfin-tdep.c could have an unexpected but important side-effect.  I
removed others that I considered more low-risk, such as:

This changes add_com to take a cmd_const_cfunc_ftype, and then fixes
up all the command implementations.

In most cases this is trivial.

981a3fb359 Constify add_prefix_cmd 
This changes add_prefix_cmd to accept a const-taking function as an
argument; then fixes up all the callers.

In a couple of spots I had to add a non-const overload of a function,
because the function is passed to two different command-adding
"constructors".  These overloads are temporary; once constification is
complete they can be removed.

This patch also fixes a typo I happened to notice while constifying.

Note that this touches a couple of files (gnu-nat.c and go32-nat.c)
that I can't build.  So, while I made a best-effort there, I am not
certain they will still compile.

Tested by rebuilding.

93921405a4 Introduce command_line_up 
This introduces command_line_up, a unique_ptr for command_line
objects, and changes many places to use it.  This removes a number of
cleanups.

Command lines are funny in that sometimes they are reference counted.
Once there is more C++-ification of some of the users, perhaps all of
these can be changed to use shared_ptr instead.

1ac32117f7 Remove cleanups from execute_gdb_command 
This replaces a cleanup in execute_gdb_command with an instance of
std::string.

Testing showed that this originally missed a cleanup that was returned
by prevent_dont_repeat.  This version of the patch changes
prevent_dont_repeat to return a scoped_restore rather than a cleanup.

cb81451067 Make the interpreters be per UI 
Make each UI have its own interpreter list, top level interpreter,
current interpreter, etc.  The "interpreter_async" global is not
really specific to an struct interp (it crosses interpreter-exec ...),
so I moved it to "struct ui" directly, while the other globals were
left hidden in interps.c, opaque to the rest of GDB.

The wildebeest-debian-wheezy-i686 buildslave's build is broken due to:

 ../../binutils-gdb/gdb/python/python.c: In function void _initialize_python():
 ../../binutils-gdb/gdb/python/python.c:1709:36: error: missing sentinel in function call [-Werror=format]

Reproduced on Fedora 23 by sticking a few:

 #undef NULL
 #define 0

in build/gdb/build-gnulib/{stddef|signal|stdio}.h.  Hopefully this
caught all instances.

224c3ddb89 Add casts to memory allocation related calls 
Most allocation functions (if not all) return a void* pointing to the
allocated memory.  In C++, we need to add an explicit cast when
assigning the result to a pointer to another type (which is the case
more often than not).

The content of this patch is taken from Pedro's branch, from commit
"(mostly) auto-generated patch to insert casts needed for C++".  I
validated that the changes make sense and manually reflowed the code to
make it respect the coding style.  I also found multiple places where I
could use XNEW/XNEWVEC/XRESIZEVEC/etc.

Thanks a lot to whoever did that automated script to insert casts, doing
it completely by hand would have taken a ridiculous amount of time.

Only files built on x86 with --enable-targets=all are modified.  This
means that all other -nat.c files are untouched and will have to be
dealt with later by using appropiate compilers.  Or maybe we can try to
build them with a regular g++ just to know where to add casts, I don't
know.

I built-tested this with --enable-targets=all and reg-tested.

Here's the changelog entry, which was not too bad to make despite the
size, thanks to David Malcom's script.  I fixed some bits by hand, but
there might be some wrong parts left (hopefully not).

Building GDB in C++ mode on Fedora 20, the gdb/guile/ code shows ~280
errors like:

 src/gdb/guile/guile.c:515:1: error: invalid conversion from ‘scm_unused_struct* (*)(SCM, SCM) {aka scm_unused_struct* (*)(scm_unused_struct*, scm_unused_struct*)}’ to ‘scm_t_subr {aka void*}’ [-fpermissive]

This commit fixes them all.
