fd67aa1129 Update year range in copyright notice of binutils files
Adds two new external authors to etc/update-copyright.py to cover
bfd/ax_tls.m4, and adds gprofng to dirs handled automatically, then
updates copyright messages as follows:

1) Update cgen/utils.scm emitted copyrights.
2) Run "etc/update-copyright.py --this-year" with an extra external
   author I haven't committed, 'Kalray SA.', to cover gas testsuite
   files (which should have their copyright message removed).
3) Build with --enable-maintainer-mode --enable-cgen-maint=yes.
4) Check out */po/*.pot which we don't update frequently.

fa4f2d46f9 x86: Fix DT_JMPREL/DT_PLTRELSZ when relocs share a section
If a linker script does not place the PLT relocations and "normal"
relocations in separate ELF sections, `ld` will currently output incorrect
values for DT_JMPREL and DT_PLTRELSZ - they cover the entire ELF section,
rather than just the PLT relocations

Don't ignore the extent of the BFD section - use the size of the srelplt
BFD section and its offset from the output_secttion

ebb191adac x86: Disallow invalid relocation against protected symbol
I am checking this into master and will backport it to 2.38 branch.

H.J
----
On x86, GCC 12 supports -mno-direct-extern-access to enable canonical
reference to protected function and disable copy relocation. With
-mno-direct-extern-access, the canonical protected function symbols must
be accessed via canonical reference and the protected data symbols in
shared libraries are non-copyable. Under glibc 2.35, non-canonical
reference to the canonical protected function will get the run-time error:

./y: internal_f: ./libfoo.so: non-canonical reference to canonical protected function

and copy relocations against the non-copyable protected symbols will get
the run-time error:

./x: internal_i: ./libfoo.so: copy relocation against non-copyable protected symbol

Update x86 linker to disallow non-canonical reference to the canonical
protected function:

ld: plt.o: non-canonical reference to canonical protected function `internal_f' in libfoo.so
ld: failed to set dynamic section sizes: bad value

and copy relocation against the non-copyable protected symbol:

ld: main.o: copy relocation against non-copyable protected symbol `internal_i' in libfoo.so

at link-time.

50c95a739c x86: Propery check PC16 reloc overflow in 16-bit mode instructions
commit a7664973b2
Author: Jan Beulich <jbeulich@suse.com>
Date:   Mon Apr 26 10:41:35 2021 +0200

    x86: correct overflow checking for 16-bit PC-relative relocs

caused linker failure when building 16-bit program in a 32-bit ELF
container.  Update GNU_PROPERTY_X86_FEATURE_2_USED with

a7664973b2 x86: correct overflow checking for 16-bit PC-relative relocs
The only insn requiring a truly 16-bit PC-relative relocation outside of
16-bit mode is XBEGIN (with an operand size override). For it, the
relocation generated should behave similar to 8- and (for 64-bit) 32-bit
PC-relatives ones, i.e. be checked for a signed value to fit the field.
This same mode is also correct for 16-bit code. Outside of 16-bit code,
branches with operand size overrides act in a truly PC-relative way only
when living in the low 32k of address space, as they truncate rIP to 16
bits. This can't be expressed by a PC-relative relocation.

Putting in place a new testcase, I'd like to note that the two existing
ones (pcrel16 and pcrel16abs) appear to be pretty pointless: They don't
expect any error despite supposedly checking for overflow, and in fact
there can't possibly be any error for the
- former since gas doesn't emit any relocation in the first place there,
- latter because the way the relocation gets expressed by gas doesn't
  allow the linker to notice the overflow; it should be detected by gas
  if at all, but see above (an error would be reported here for x86-64
  afaict, but this test doesn't get re-used there).

32930e4edb x86: Support GNU_PROPERTY_X86_ISA_1_V[234] marker
GCC 11 supports -march=x86-64-v[234] to enable x86 micro-architecture ISA
levels:

https://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=97250

Update GNU_PROPERTY_X86_ISA_1_XXX macros:

https://gitlab.com/x86-psABIs/x86-64-ABI/-/merge_requests/13

in x86 ELF binaries to indicate that micro-architecture ISA levels
required to execute the binary:

 #define GNU_PROPERTY_X86_ISA_1_NEEDED (GNU_PROPERTY_X86_UINT32_OR_LO + 2)
 #define GNU_PROPERTY_X86_ISA_1_USED (GNU_PROPERTY_X86_UINT32_OR_AND_LO + 2)
 #define GNU_PROPERTY_X86_ISA_1_V2 (1U << 0)
 #define GNU_PROPERTY_X86_ISA_1_V3 (1U << 1)
 #define GNU_PROPERTY_X86_ISA_1_V4 (1U << 2)

The previous GNU_PROPERTY_X86_ISA_1_XXX macros are deprecated and renamed
to GNU_PROPERTY_X86_COMPAT_2_ISA_1_XXX.

In addition to EM_X86_64, GNU_PROPERTY_X86_ISA_1_V[234] marker can be used
by ld.so to detect the x86-64-v4 shared library placed in an x86-64-v2
directory by mistake on an x86-64-v2 machine to avoid crashes on x86-64-v4
instructions.

Add -z x86-64-v[234] linker command line option to mark x86-64-v[234]
ISA level as needed.

Also add

 #define GNU_PROPERTY_X86_FEATURE_2_MASK (1U << 11)

for mask registers.

348fe36b1d Remove perror from ld_assemble, ld_compile and ld_nm
ERROR should really be reserved for errors in the testsuite framework,
not just normal errors from the tools under test. Removing use of
perror has been suggested before but without action, over concerns
that some test failures might be missed. This patch removes uses of
perror in ld_assemble, ld_compile and ld_nm, and updates numerous
places that ignored the result of these functions by inappropriately
returning an "unresolved" test status. Net result over my large set
of targets look good, in some cases improving the diagnostics, eg:

i386-msdos  -ERROR: tmpdir/script: nm failed
i386-msdos  -ERROR: tmpdir/script: nm failed
i386-msdos  -ERROR: tmpdir/script: nm failed
i386-msdos  -ERROR: tmpdir/script: nm failed
i386-msdos  +FAIL: script
i386-msdos  +FAIL: MRI script
i386-msdos  +FAIL: MEMORY
i386-msdos  +FAIL: MEMORY with symbols

	* testsuite/lib/ld-lib.exp (default_ld_compile): Don't perror on

cebd6b8ac1 IFUNC: Update IFUNC resolver check with DT_TEXTREL
Add ifunc_resolvers to elf_link_hash_table and use it for both x86 and

44ed80923a Use better test for usable compiler in ld testsuite.
The ld testsuite includes numerous tests that depend on being able to
compile and link programs with the C compiler. Some of these tests
use [which $CC] to check for the presence of the compiler before
proceeding with the test, but run_ld_link_exec_tests and run_cc_link_tests
give ERRORs if compilation fails. Also, even if $CC is defined and present,
it may not be usable due to missing libraries, etc.

This patch adds a new procedure check_compiler_available that attempts
to build an empty program and caches the result. Uses of [which $CC]
are replaced with calls to this procedure, and run_ld_link_exec_tests
and run_cc_link_tests now also guard attempts to use $CC.
